Seven tram stops in east Hong Kong Island have been temporarily closed after a tram derailed near the Shau Kei Wan Terminus on Tuesday.

The accident happened at around 10:30am when the tram was making a turn near a construction site. No passengers were on board and the driver was not injured.

Hong Kong Tramways inspected the tracks as the site of the derailment and decided to initiate renewal work ahead of schedule. According to a notice on the company’s website, three eastbound stops and four westbound stops will be closed until Saturday, December 19.

The Hoi Foo Street and Sai Wan Ho Depot stations will serve as temporary terminuses for eastbound trams. Passengers going westwards to Happy Valley, Western Market, Shek Tong Tsui or Kennedy Town can embark at Hoi An Street or Holy Cross Path stations.
