A child was killed at a metro station in Chongqing, China, on Thursday in another escalator-related tragedy. The incident occurred at around 11am in Beiyu District. A mother and her child were taking the escalators up at Hongqihegou Station when the child became trapped between the floor and the handrails at the end of the escalators.

Pictures uploaded by eyewitnesses show the boy’s face turning red as his mother and another child stood beside him in tears.

A station staff member rushed to the scene and stopped the escalator. The child was reportedly rescued and taken to hospital but passed away at 1pm.

The local authorities are investigating the cause of the incident. The escalator is currently no longer in use.
