Longstanding Cantonese eatery Tsui Wah Restaurant announced on Monday that its popular 24-hour flagship on Wellington Street will be “temporarily closing” from Friday onwards.

The popular Hong Kong-style diner, or cha chaan tengthanked Hongkongers on Facebook for their “support over the last 17 years.” It plans to bid farewell to customers with a free afternoon tea session from 3-5pm on Friday, followed by a party in the evening.

Tsui Wah’s Central branch has long been a favourite of late-night revellers in nearby entertainment district Lan Kwai Fong.

The free session is limited to 300 diners and tickets will be given out at 11:30am on Friday outside the restaurant’s entrance. Diners are entitled to two tickets each. Donations are welcome and will go towards dementia patients.

The flagship branch is set to undergo renovation at the end of the week until the end of November, the Hong Kong Economic Journal reported.

Tsui Wah is known for its Hong Kong classic diner food. Its signature dishes include crispy buns served with sweet condensed milk, fish ball noodle soup and beef brisket curry with rice.

The Tsui Wah Group operates 34 branches across the city and more than 20 in Macau and China.
