Police in southwestern China shot dead a robbery suspect in a busy street following a dramatic confrontation on Monday afternoon.
A police officer in Chengdu, Sichuan province opened fire after the knife-wielding suspect attacked him, injuring his neck and shoulders, the Chengdu Public Security Bureau said in a statement on social media platform Weibo.
The suspect was one of three men who were accused of being involved in a car robbery case. They were surrounded by officers on the intersection of Xiaotian West Street and Xiaotian North Street at around 5:40pm on Monday, the statement read.
One of the men resisted arrest and attacked an officer, who opened fire after giving a verbal warning, police said.
In footage shot by local broadcaster Sichuan TV, the suspect was seen lying on the street when medics arrived on the scene. Just a few metres away, policemen asked onlookers to disperse.
The suspect was declared dead in a hospital. The other two men were subdued, according to police, although a Sichuan TV reporter on the scene said one suspect “ran away.” The injured officer was sent to hospital for treatment.
