A man whose life savings were stolen in a home burglary in Hung Hom on Saturday night said he put all his money at home because he “didn’t trust banks.”

The 65-year-old retiree, who lost a safe with HK$800,000 in it, was one of three victims in a series of burglaries over the weekend in Hung Hom, police told HKFP.

The man, surnamed Fung, told Ming Pao that he kept his cash in a safe because he lost faith in banks after a bank run in the 1980s. The safe was 16 inches by 14 inches and weighed about 30 pounds, the newspaper reported.

Fung told Ming Pao he felt lost and that he applied for old age allowance from the government after the theft.

A 38-year-old woman living in the same building on Pau Chung Street called police Saturday night after she discovered her windows were pried.

The woman did not lose anything while another victim in the building lost a laptop worth about HK$2,000, police said.

All three victims had their windows pried. No arrests have been made yet in the case.
