At least five cities in Taiwan suspended schools and work on Monday as the island nation braces for torrential rain brought by Typhoon Dujuan.
Taiwanese authorities issued a land and sea typhoon alert at 10:15am, saying Dujuan is expected to make landfall in Yilan or Hualien County between 9pm and midnight on Monday.
Keelung, Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan and Yilan have all suspended schools and work, according to Taiwan’s Storm Media. The news website said high speed trains on the island will stop running after 3pm on Monday and multiple tourist areas have been evacuated. A ceremony to celebrate Teacher’s Day in Taipei was also cancelled.
Meanwhile, at least 48 flights between Hong Kong and Taiwan were cancelled while 22 others were delayed.
Heavy rains will last into Tuesday when Dujuan is forecast to move past the island and into eastern China, bringing rainfall to Fujian province.
