An additional gate has been erected around the Legislative Council complex at Tamar ahead of the first anniversary of the pro-democracy Occupy protests that surrounded the buildings in September last year.
Images shared online by student activist Alvin Cheng, also known by his nickname “Four-Eyed Brother,” show a three-metre high gate sealing off vehicle access to site’s east-wing entrance, beside the forecourt popularly known as Civic Square.
Following the relocation of Central Government Offices from Government Hill in Central, the 1,000-square-metre site became the focal point of protests against the national education curriculum and the government’s denial of a free-to-air licence to broadcaster HKTV. In July 2014, a steel fence was put in place to restrict public access to the square.
On the night of September 26, student demonstrators capped off a week-long strike against the Beijing white paper ruling out full democracy for Hong Kong. They scaled the barriers, leading to the arrest of 13 who remained in the square overnight.
