The Hong Kong tramways opened in 1904. After 111 years, the iconic double-decker trams are still a part of many people’s lives as they shuttle up to 180,000 passengers a day around Hong Kong Island.

Nicknamed “Ding Ding” by locals, the tram runs across the Hong Kong Island, from Kennedy Town in the western end to Shau Kei Wan in the east.

The tram is the cheapest form of public transportation in Hong Kong. Fares are HK$2.3 for adults, HK$1.2 for children and HK$1.1 for the elderly.

This week, a consulting company proposed eliminating tram services between Central and Admiralty, causing controversy among ‘ding ding’ lovers.
