An 18 year-old man escaped from police custody in a hospital emergency room on Wednesday, but police caught up with him 11 hours later.
Police confirmed the man in question was arrested on Sunday and later charged with maliciously wounding a family of three with corrosive liquid in Tsz Wan Shan last month, and with drug trafficking.
According to Sky Post, the suspect was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kowloon in the early hours of Wednesday morning after saying he was unwell. While waiting in the emergency room he asked for a blanket because he was feeling cold.
He slowly wriggled out of his handcuffs under the blanket, pushed away the two officers guarding him and ran out of the emergency room. According to Sky Post, one of the officers managed to grab his jacket at one point but he got away after jumping down from the ground floor of the building to a parking lot.
Police caught him again 11 hours later in Chai Wan. A friend of the suspect was also detained for allegedly helping him.
At around midnight Tuesday the suspect was taken to the hospital after claiming that he was unwell. While he was waiting in the emergency room, he found out his handcuff was not tight. He then told the two officers who were watching him that he felt cold and needed a blanket to cover himself. He slowly wriggled out of the handcuffs under the blanket, pushed away the two officers, and ran off. According to Sky Post, one of the officers managed to grab his jacket at one point but he got away.
Police later confirmed the man was originally arrested on suspicion of wounding a family of three with erosive liquid in Tsz Wan Shan last month. He is charged with malicious wounding as well as drug trafficking after 35 grams of cocaine was found in his home in Wan Chai.
A hearing was held on Monday at the Kwun Tong Magistrates’ Court. The magistrate denied him bail. Another hearing will be held on Thursday.
