クロノアクロニクル第４０回！ 今週は販売部とのエピソードを！
Klonoa Chronicles #40! This week we have an episode with the sales department!
ある日、開発中のクロノアを販売部にお披露目することになりました。 概ね好評だったのですが、ある人がポツリとこんな事を言ったんです。 「その長い耳でダンボみたいに空を飛べないの？」
One day, we decided to finally present what we’ve been developing for Klonoa to the sales department. It was generally well-received, but someone said “With those big ears, shouldn’t he be able to fly like Dumbo?”
この言葉にスタッフは、空飛べちゃったら敵とのやり取りやマップの仕掛けやアスレチックのギミックなんかのゲーム性が崩壊してしまう、販売はゲームの事、全くわかっていない！と憤慨していました。
The staff was upset with this comment, saying that if he could fly, it would destroy the gameplay, such as the interaction with enemies, map tricks, and athletic gimmicks, and that the sales team didn’t understand games at all! The staff was very upset.
でも、その時思ったんです。 長い耳を見て、ダンボみたいに空が飛べないのかなぁ？というのは客観的に見て素直な感想なんじゃないか？ それなら一般のお客さんも同じように思うんじゃないか？
But then I thought, when I saw his long ears, if he could fly like Dumbo. Isn’t that an objective and honest impression? Wouldn’t the general public feel the same way?
そこで、確かに空を自由に飛んでしまってはゲーム性が破綻してしまうけど、耳を羽ばたかせる事でちょっとだけ空中浮遊ができるようにしたらどうかと考えてみることになりました。
So I decided to think about how to make the ears flap so that the player can float in the air a little bit, although it would certainly ruin the gameplay if the player could fly freely in the sky.
すると崖を飛び越えた時、ちょっとだけ飛距離が足りなくて届かないような時、耳を羽ばたかせるとちょっとだけ飛距離が伸ばせて届くとか、落下中に着地点に危険があった時、羽ばたいて避けるとか、空中に少しだけホバリングしてタイミングを合わせるとか、アナログなテクニックが増えるんじゃないか？
Then, when he jumps off a cliff, if you’re a little short of flying distance and can’t reach it, he can flap his ears to increase his flying distance a little and reach it, or when you’re falling and there’s a danger of landing, he can flap his ears to avoid it or to adjust your timing.
