Klonoa Chronicles is a series of tweets by Klonoa’s original creator, Hideo Yoshizawa, that give insights into the development of the games he had a hand in making. Below is a translation along with the original Japanese text.
クロノアクロニクル第３６回！ 企画で集まってファントマイル語作成会議が開かれました。
Klonoa Chronicles #36! We got together for planning and had a Phantomile word creation meeting.
そんな中でよく使われる基本的な言葉が決定していきました。 「ワッフー」の他、「ルプルドゥー」は「行こう！」レッツゴーですね。「ラ・ドゥ」は「わかった」とうなづく時、「トゥラッパー」は「ありがとう」といった言葉です。
As time went on, basic words were decided upon. Additionally, we created words such as “Wahoo” (Waffū) and “Rupurudu” (Rupurudo~ū
) to mean “Let’s go!”. “La-du” (Ra do~u) means “I understand” and “Tu-rappa” (To~urappā) means “Thank you”.
他にも「ワニュワニルプゥ」は「やってみるよ」、「ワニャウマニ」は聞き返す時、「パラミュー」は「ごめん」、「フワフゥー」は「ほんと？」、「パルプ」は「待て！」です。 その他は持ち帰って家で考えてくることになり、家中を歩き回りながらヒントを探しました。
“Wanyuwanyuirupu” (Wanyuwanirupu~u) is “I’ll try” and “Wanayaumani” (Wanyaumani) is to ask a question. “Paramyu” (Paramyū) is “Sorry”, “Fuwahoo” (Fuwafu~ū) is “Really?”, and “Parupu” is “Wait!”.
Others took these notes home and thought about it, walking around the house looking for hints.
そんな時、よく読んでいた「ジョジョの奇妙な冒険」に出てくるキャラクターの名前がバンド名をもじったものだったりすることを知りました。 エシディシという名前はバンドのＡＣ／ＤＣから来ているとか。
That’s when I learned that some of the characters in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, which I used to read a lot, were named after bands. “Eshidishi” is how you would say the band name “AC / DC”.
そうか、そういうのもおもしろいなと思いました。 そこで私が当時大好きで聞いていたエコー＆ザ・バニーメンというネオアコバンドの略称のエコバニから「エコバニム」を作り、「どういたしまして」にしました。 つづく
Well, I thought it would be interesting to do something like that. So I made the word “ekobanimu” which is derived from how you would say “Echo & The Bunnymen”, a band I listened to at the time, and had it mean “You’re welcome”. To be continued.
