I used an old portable version (98) that I still had laying around on this machine, with ublock and 4chanx, Cloudflare sucks huge titties though and is slow or sometimes fails the challenges (unless it just needed some kind of training first). If there is one thing that will do in this old netbook, it is the lack of browser support and compatibility. Though the need to migrate to Linux as I had already been planning to do may be mitigated depending on whether or not Supermium works. Not sure about email clients or banking though and whether or not it is a good idea on this machine.
>>
>cykablyat
The only OS I enjoyed and didn't want to abandon was 98. Everything after it was a varying degree of "at least everything works so far". Why would I want to change 10 to 7 to XP to 10 to XP to 7 to 10, it's all the same ugly and/or soulless shit.

Troonix is, was and will be inferior choice as a desktop operating system, even when compared to something as old as 7 or XP. Troonix literally needed entire world to go against good, old windows versions in order to gain additional ~3% market share. Just use Linux Anon, for fucks sakes this is getting ridiculous, I loved 7 myself, but my god the thing is too old to daily? Virtualized to run old productivity apps or a dedicated gaming machine? Sure, but as a daily system you need something newer, if Google Chrome isn't *officially* going to support 7 in a world where everything is a browser, you really can't daily it anymore.

But just use oldapps.com or some shit like that.

>>
>>107616349
Linux doesn't need Rufus, Linux Mint itself comes with a simple to use usb image writer that works.

I wish Linux on the desktop was here but corporate efforts for the past 2 decades really put it on hold, even a few days ago an important programmer was kicked out of a project by a microsoft employee

The lack of enhanced pointer precision on the touchpad for this Yoga 11e, even though touchscreen works for Lubuntu out of the box. I'll try Mint XFCE next I guess. But seriously the lack of synaptics drivers is a major pain in the ass so far and I don't know if there is a substitute.

Mint has severly outdated packages, missing libraries, low quality fonts, hacked together audio, etc...

The API for applications has changed to the point where newer stuff straight up does not work without 10 or newer, and there is some hackery nonsense you can do, but if you're at that point as a normal user, you may as well go straight to Windows 11 or go to Linux, because tinkering around with Windows 7 is a waste of time, you don't even get the benefits of Linux, when the whole point of Windows is stuff "just working" also there's no more official Chrome support, so more and more things are going to keep breaking as time goes on when it comes to internet usage.
>>
>>107616616
This is the "hackery nonsense" you are refering to:
1. download an installer
2. click next twice
3. if a program doesn't work > right click on icon > enable compatibility

And while you're correct that "just works" is a major selling point of windows, it is not worth to trade the remaining "just works" you have for many other issues linux desktop comes with

Also, chrome is being maintained by people who still use windows 7

What issues? I mean Jesus Christ if anything it's easier to install and get setup than Windows, there isn't even going to websites and downloading shit, just open the software center and click an app and install from the repository, and then software updater can use said repository to check for updates on everything that's installed, where on Windows, programs do their own thing, checking for updates at random or when you open it.

98 is unstable. The whole 9x "family" is as it is effectively built upon MS-DOS. The earliest usable NT kernel one is 2000 but it has its quirks, and regardless even with XP/2003 you have to choose between 4+ GB RAM support OR good backwards compatibility for your older gayms. Guess which version can do both even though its backwards compatibility is slightly worse than XP's.

Once the rest of the old guard dies out and the remaining 0.0001% of younguns are the only ones that remain then yeah, I guess that will be it for real file managers. Not only will linux be unable to replicate the coziness of old Windows, or the pointer precision out of the box, but it also cannot into power management presumably unless the OEMs write optimizations themselves.

I will proceed with the experiment anyway. Cause default lubuntu looks kinda cozy in its own way as I sit in the overcast winter evening.

Not only is chrone being actively maintained by windows 7 users but they are actively trying to add windows 2000 supports to it as well just for funsies, as is the case with supermium. Windows 7 is supported by hardware from 2006 to 2020 and donor boards, hot air stations, and buying chips from mouser is a thing. You can keep essentially any piece of hardware running forever if you just strive to not be a helpless retard. >>107631032
It’s not about the firewall retard, it’s about unpatched RCE vulns that require no user interaction
90% or more home ISPs use NAT and wont allow fuckheads to expose ports to the open internet (because they’re stupid enough to do shit like install XP), they make it a massive pain in the ass to port forward because if you get fucked by your misconfigured device it means more traffic they have to serve
If your device catches a reverse shell via an unpatched vulnerability however, it doesn’t require a port forward to work
XP/vista/7 is so vulnerable even AI could build a proof of concept to bend your device over from a website visit
This is why installing a super old proprietary OS is a retarded idea unless you plan to air gap it
If you want to get on the internet you should use Linux or BSD instead
Or at least fire up a packet sniffer and watch your device spew traffic after it gets pwned so you can be entertained

So you used a Microsoft account to go grab the patch? I somehow doubt that. That’s also 1 of hundreds of vulns that were discovered after XP was sunset, most allowing RCE. Many of them went unpatched and if they were patched I expect whatever bootleg XP ISO you downloaded off of the internet and never verified didn’t have it to begin with. That’s why XP vulns still have high EPSS scores, cause they cost nothing to throw around and idiots get rekt without even realizing.

Why is Windows 7 so easy to use? On Linux or Windows 10/11 I’m always getting lost in menus and unsure where to click, but on Windows 7 I just intuitively know where everything is.

>never affected anyone but arch troons
>was caught and fixed nearly instantly because an autist noticed his boot time was 16 microseconds longer than normal
What’s this look like when a vuln is discovered on win7 in 2025 I wonder
>>
>>107631551
>zomg ur moving goalposts
>literally won’t accept anything short of his own box getting pwned as proof that XP is very fucking vulnerable

>”welp, they don’t like my take on gay marriage so I guess I have to install windows 2000”
Did it ever occur to you that you can use software from people you disagree with politically
>>
>>107614597 (OP)
Windows 7 is great, but I personally prefer XP. I used to daily drive Mint for 6 years, then switched to XP because I realized I don’t actually need anything more. It’s fast and extremely customizable even more than Linux. I was worried about going online at first, but MyPal does a lot to keep things secure
It's very comfy

>everything right of me is racist
Thanks for proving my point.

>>107631628
They don't want you to use their software if they find out you're right-wing. I mean any form or right wing, not specifically conservative, anti-gay or whatever. Anyway I thought it was a fed psyop dressed as a meme?
>>
>>107631723
Sure but they could never know if you don’t go on their forums and IRC channels blabbing about your politics, which is surprisingly easy to avoid as a topic. Also they can’t stop you from using it by design. It’s free software.
>>
>>107631747
Yeah, but they do nothing but go on about their own politics. Every forum I use to be a part is now like that, they can't shut up about how evil right wingers and white people are and ban you if you have any opinion they don't like.
>>
>>107631825
Stop engaging with them and ignore their political comments
You’d be surprised how many devs are anti communist, they just don’t fucking talk about it cause they don’t want a bunch of faggots harassing them constantly

I agree with that stance, I just stopped hanging out at forums for the most part though. Couldn't be bothered putting up with it. Once in a while I'll go to forums if I need help fixing something or if I wanna see what they're like now.

>>

arent all the core kernel drivers for linux binary blobs that you cant verify? so whats the diff?
>>
>>107631548
Maybe because buttons still look like buttons and not plain static text in the middle of nowhere that you only realize is clickable because you ran out of other things to try interacting with.

telemetry depends on what updates you install but i think you can disable all the telemetry in task scheduler or just block them with a firewall worst case.
i ran win 7 for 15 yrs without any security (as in on admin, printnightmare / smb1 enabled etc) only basic updates for games/vsdistribs and a router to protec and nothing happened.

if you want to be safe you can update fully but if you want vxkex then you cant go full esu. either way just get a firewall (simplewall) and secure/disable print spooler (printnightmare) disable smb1 and remote desktop crap for piece or mind.
>>
>>107632779
simplix doesn't apply the telemetry updates but simplewall blocks the telemetry by default anyway
>>

>if you want vxkex then you cant go full esu
what is this nonsense
vxkex works fine with ESUs installed

Dr. Freeman. You really shouldn't be using Windows 7. At the moment of broadcast, as I connect, this drive will be bathed in deadly viruses that have yet to be named by human science. Perhaps when I have the leisure to do the work myself, I'll name one after you. That way you won't be completely outdated.

When the partition is setup, I will be far away from here. In another operating system, as a matter of fact. You, on the other hand, will be reformatted in every way it is possible to be formatted-and even in some which are essentially impossible.

I don't know what you can possibly hope to achieve, apart from your own obsolescence.

Are you guys running Windows 7 on modern hardware?

If so how are you doing it?
>>
>>107633737
You can modify the ISO file to support USB 3, that's all I needed to do.
>>
>>107633737
There are official windows 7 drivers for most AM4 motherboards. Many of those drivers continue to work on AM5, and for those that don't, there are community modified ones available.
