Proton 9 seems to offer the best performance but the lod issue is still there regardless. It's strange that this game is rated 'gold' btw.
Proton 10 and/or Experimental both support NTSync but at least on my machine the experience feels like I'm rubber banding in terms of input lag.
Proton 9 is Fsync.
My launch options
>LD_PRELOAD="$LD_PRELOAD:/usr/\$LIB/libgamemode.so.0" gamemoderun %command% --lua-heap-mb-size 2048
LD_PRELOAD is for gamemode, it displays some warnings on my machine but if the variable bothers you you could just erase it it's nothing important.
Not sure what has happened, I always thought that Proton 10+ was supposed to be so great but it clearly isn't at least in my case. I have some other games in which older versions feel way better but that's a new post for another time perhaps.
>>
You should add these to the OP. Relying on zoomer launchers and some r-eddit tier hearsay is pretty sad because all you need to do is to read the initial documentation from these github pages and things will become much clearer in terms of what to do and what could actually be wrong:

To add, just played bit more Darktide and I'm not really sure if Proton 9 is any better. Maybe it is. Game just feels like it's syncing really badly at times. eg. frame pacing is off even if it has locked framerate.
It was already bad in Windows of course.
Vermintide 2 is butter smooth on the other hand.

Anyone know how to get hardware acclerated sound working on Halo CE through wine? Putting the eax and dsoal dll's into the game folder alone wasn't sufficient.
>>
>>550812236
Generally you need to tell wine to load .dlls, since in most cases it doesn't do it by default, unlike windows. WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dllname=n,b" and such, where dllname is filename without .dll extension, or use launcher-specific gui options.
>>
>>550813141
>Generally you need to tell wine to load .dlls
Even those that are in the game folder?
I also tried umu-launcher but the sound quality was really low.
>>
>>550813285
>>550813141
>>550812236
Alright, I got hardware acceleration working by installing dsound using winetricks. This unfortunately makes Halo unable to start if I set umu to use my default wineprefix though, which is a shame because Halo otherwise runs a LOT better through umu.
>>

I followed this a while back to get environmental sound working in another game, maybe it'll work for halo too

Yes, unless something else is already doing the override for the same .dll, wine will not load it by default.

I got environmental sound working in wine by installing dsound through winetricks. The baseline sound quality with umu on the other hand is still really poor.

I decided to ditch umu and just install dxvk for wine. Now I get both EAX as well as super good framerates......except Halo no longer works in fullscreen and I have to run it in a window. I guess I'll try Bottles.

I seriously don't know what the fuck dxvk's problem is with my primary monitor. Halo works on my secondary monitor but not my primary monitor. I disabled my secondary monitor entirely yet Halo still doesn't work in fullscreen on my primary monitor. Alright so basically:
>Fedora
>Wayland
>NVIDIA driver
>Have multiple monitors
>Playing some good old Halo CE (2003 PC port) through Wine
>WineD3D is giving mediocre framerates on a 3060 Ti even though this is nearly a 25yo game
>Install DXVK for Wine
>Halo's framerate is now amazing....on my secondary monitor
>The game has sound and everything, but no picture if it's fullscreen on my primary monitor
>Game works in windowed mode, or on my secondary monitor
>Disabling secondary monitor entirely still produces the black screen on primary monitor
>Disabling HDR, Adaptive Sync, etc on primary monitor still produces the black screen
Is the solution to pull out my old RX 480 and sell this NVIDIAshit?
>>
>>550824837
>>550821915
I switched to X11 and this shit still doesn't work in fullscreen. This can't be a Wayland issue; this is either a DXVK issue, a Wine issue, or an NVIDIA issue.

Absolutely NVIDIA issue, especial with their direct scanout code path. I even noticed similar issue on some twitch stream where streamer was streaming expedition 33 and framerate during cut-scenes was bad but when volume indicator pop-up kicked in frame-rate became stable lol.

>>
Saw somewhere that you can very quickly disable/enable SMT on linux. It's not something I'd do globally but on a game by game basis it could be helpful considering the CPU I currently have.
Is there any way I could do it by just adding an argument to steam launch options maybe? Or just a quick toggle?
>>
Went to bed with webms still encoding, and now I might as well post them because it's that time of day when there's too much glare on my monitor to play any games. (My PC is temporarily not in its normal location. Otherwise there would be no window behind it.)

What the fuck is her problem?
...Well okay, it's actually the prince's fault for having one job and not doing it. All he had to do was put the dagger in the thingy, but he stopped to wonder if she's a bitch and then it was too late.
>>
Not shown: she died :'(.
Anyway, this penultimate fight is weird because you get the dagger back but you still have the sword that disintegrates enemies on contact. So you can't actually get sand except by fucking around until the enemies knock accidentally each other down, or possibly by doing a parry with dagger riposte but that might not be possible on this enemy. I'm not even sure if being able to get sand in this fight is intended. It certainly isn't very helpful, because the next fight after this is the final boss fight in which the dagger starts full anyway.

Pointless but I almost killed myself doing it anyway.

The final fight is a bit more annoying than I remember. The dude blocks or counters almost every attack, and I was impatient and took a lot of hits myself. I probably should have used the haste power (>>550076413 →) because there's no other use for the white things on the sand meter, but if I remember correctly, it would (at best) work for one phase of this multiple-phase fight. I did try slowing down time (not shown) and it didn't help me much (which is why I almost never use it; see >>550163831 →).

Parrying this guy is not as effective as I thought it would be. Trying to hit him with the dagger might be useless as well. I wanted to know what happens if he takes a hit from the dagger (which would freeze other enemies), but he always blocked it.

Either RNG is a fickle bitch or the guy is coded to stop blocking attacks at some point. Or maybe his ability to block attacks is decreased as he takes damage and so the first few hits are the hardest to get. I'm never sure if I'm using the right strategy against this guy. Newfag here. I want to move on to Linux since W11 is trash. Which distro should I move to? My current computers got NVidia gpus (4070 on desktop and 4060 on laptop). I rarely touch new games, and mostly play Elden Ring, Fallout 2, and Morrowind.

As usual, I think I took too long on this mission. Basically steamrolled the enemy once I decided to move, despite having a pretty small army. The computer player is held back massively in the campaign missions, at least for the first campaign, because I tried a custom map game against the computer and it was much harder.
>>
Uh oh...

My base was actually defended well enough that the end of this mission didn't have the dramatic effect that I remember.

If gamescope doesn't work - it doesn't work with Tarkov for example (and it keeps crashing often when alt-tabbing etc)- one trick is to start up the problematic game in a window and then use Borderless Fullscreen.

Oh well. It worked out. Can't really complain about a good opportunity to take out a big-dick unit before it has a chance to do big-dick damage to something worth shooting. It had no back-up so it just got wrecked.
Assigning the hotkey to the ComSat station is pretty important for this mission if you don't want to build a science vessel, because the enemy has a bunch of ghosts. They haven't tried to nuke me yet, but I'm pretty sure they did so in a previous play-through. Maybe my spider mines prevented it.

Turns out in order for the game to actually run at full speed you need to disable CSMT, otherwise the game gets slower and slower over time to the point that it's unplayable

I know next to nothing about linux, but I've been getting sick and tired of my windows pc getting slow as shit lately.
I've always been told that gaming on linux is nigh impossible, but is that really the case and is it worth jumping ship to an OS that isn't bloated to fuck and back with spyware and what not.
Like fuck me sure 16GB of DDR4 isn't a lot of ram for some super autist space command supercomputer, but it should be more than enough to run UE4 games and such, yet windows hogs like half of it for itself.

No, I am not upgrading my ancient shitbox pc with new hardware, I expect software devs to optimise their jeet code.
I just want to play my shit in peace.

Used to be the case, but since Proton (compatibility layer to run Windows games on Linux) + DXVK (translates DirectX to Vulkan) this is no longer the case. Linux can really run about any game these days without problems. Only thing that won't work are multiplayer games with kernel level anticheat. And yes, niche games should work fine as well.
If you have an AMD card you will also get access to the open source AMD drivers on Linux, which are considered superior to the Windows drivers.

>is it worth jumping ship to an OS that isn't bloated to fuck and back with spyware and what not.
Of course it's worth it. Switching to Linux will have a learning curve. You have probably used Windows your entire life like most people on this planet. Just be prepared to learn and accept Linux will do many things differently to Windows.

Let me give you an example: updating. One of the biggest things Windows users always complain about are forced updates. On Linux you decide when/if you want to update. No dogshit popups that can't be disabled, no forced restarts, no extra bloat added to your system without your consent. When you use Linux your computer belongs to you and not to some corporation that wants to harvest all your data.

Put some effort in to learn how to use Linux and you will be free from Microsoft forever. No more LTSC cope, no more trying to stay on older versions like some people are still on 7. You'll be free forever.
Just imagine how that will feel.

If you play any of the following it is impossible: PUBG, Fortnite, Call of Duty, Battlefield, League of Legends (and other riot slop), Escape from Tarkov, Apex Legends, etc (look up areweanticheatyet for more). Otherwise, it's click and play via steam if you have your library, or via lutris with minimal configuration if you are a file sharing enjoyer.

Oh cool, my GitHub scraper is still working.
Time to play some Blake Stone for an hour and then get bored like I do every time there's a new release of its source port.

It uses Vulkan now. The previous release (1.2.16) was OpenGL.
The brutal death animations are possibly the best part of this game, to be honest.

Just kidding about Blake Stone. I went back to finish the Terran campaign in StarCraft instead.
