Charlottesville ends Flock camera pilot program over privacy concerns
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Charlottesville will not continue using Flock cameras now that the pilot program has expired, City Manager Sam Sanders announced.
The decision comes after months of concern from city council about data privacy and how information collected by police could be accessed or shared beyond Charlottesville.
Some councilors worried the technology could eventually feed into large federal databases, giving government too much power over personal data.
“So that pilot has now ended, the cameras are being removed and we will continue to do responsible work just without the use of automatic license plates readers. We need to have further discussion about that,” Sanders said.
Sanders said council is open to talks about using different technology in 2026.
