The following rankings are based on my personal opinion when the troop formation is specialized in Mounted Troop.
Example of troop formation – more than 90% mounted troops / less than 10% other troops / all troops are layered
Assumptions
- General – All
- Specialty – Maximize all 4. (Reference: Specialty Guide)
- Star level – 10 (Awakened)
- Covenant – Maximize all.
Evaluation Criteria
I calculated the following 3 types of evaluation scores.
- Evaluation 1: Damage
- Calculated by adding the buff values of Attack and March Size.
- The March Size buff value is multiplied by five (x5) before being added.
- (Why x5 will be explained later.)
- Evaluation 2: Evaluation 1 + Defense + HP
- Calculated by adding the buff values of Defense and HP to the Evaluation 1 score.
- Evaluation 3: Evaluation 2 + Debuff
- Only if it has a debuff.
- For an All Types of Troop Debuff, the debuff value is multiplied by four (x4) before being added.
The ranking is ordered by Evaluation Score 3.
If you would like to know the ranks for Evaluation Score 1 or Evaluation Score 2, please refer to the table below, where the table can be sorted accordingly.
Why x5 ? (Additional note regarding evaluation 1)
Reason: After applying various values to the damage calculation formula, this effect was roughly equivalent to an attack buff.
(March Size +10% provides roughly a +50% attack buff damage increase effect)
However, please note that this multiplier of five does not apply as a universal rule under all circumstances.
The relationship between March Size Buff (%) and Attack Buff (%) cannot typically be expressed as a simple multiplier like “multiplying March Size Buff (%) by a certain factor equals Attack Buff (%)”.
However, I determined that under specific conditions, it might be possible to simplify the multiplier to some extent.
As of November 2025, the maximum attack buff from a fully-developed general is around +500%. Under these conditions, the result was approximately a 5x multiplier.
If this attack buff standard changes, the results would be as follows:
- If it is +1,000%… approximately 8.5 times (x8.5)
- If it is +800%… approximately 7 times (x7)
- If it is +100%… approximately 1.5 times (x1.5)
Since general’s buffs continue to increase steadily, this multiplier will likely rise gradually in the future.
2 types of rankings
Some buffs that each general has are not valid if they are used as reinforcements to an ally’s castle or if they are made defenders of their own castle. (For more information: Buff / Debuff – Basic Guide)
In other words, some generals have “march/rally and “Reinforcements (to an ally’s castle)/Defenders” have very different performances.
For this reason, the ranking is divided between these 2 types.
Buffs by Skillbook
Basically, it is assumed that by using an assistant, the following 6 types are attached.
Attack, Defense, HP, Speed, March Size, March Speed (Lv4 for each).
In other words, it is basically assumed that there will be no difference depending on the skill book.
However, if a general has a skill book that cannot be added, it is excluded from the buff value.
A) for March & Rally
Overall Rating
For marching/rallying, I recommend Henry IV.
Next are, Stephen I of Hungary, Louis XIV, Olav II.
Hermes is quite good, but I would recommend making him assistants rather than main generals. He is difficult to obtain and very difficult to make red stars.
For non-paying:
Even at Red Star 0, the top-ranked general in this list is recommended — they outperform a Red Star 5 Poligenus, available at the tavern (assuming max Specialties and Covenant).
Even for free-to-play players, obtaining the latest premium generals outside the Tavern isn’t very difficult (Reference: How to obtain).
If you save up general tokens and use them during events when new generals is added, there’s a high chance of getting one.
Aiming for Red Star 1 is also totally realistic.

Possesses an extremely large march size.
Consequently, its damage output is exceptionally high, surpassing Henry IV at Score 1.
Since most of the buffs are “basic buffs”, he is hardly weakened when he is used as reinforcements to allied castles or a wall defender. (See Section B for details.)
However, maximally developing it as a main general is generally not recommended for most players.
Acquisition is relatively difficult, making it extremely challenging to reach Red Star 5
In this regard, I think it is designed to be used as an assistant.

B) for Reinforce (to ally’s keep) & Wall Defender
When a reinforcement to alliance member’s city, or a wall defender, the “marching buff” (“when General is leading the army to attack” buff) is disabled.

Note
Weaknesses of Stephen I, Louis XIV, Olav II, Artemis, etc.
They can be considered the best general only when attacking (marching), but when reinforcing (alliance member’s city), or defending main city (on wall), his performance drops significantly.
If you are using them as your main general, some players may need to train a separate general for reinforcements.
(However, if you can’t maximize the 4th specialty, it may not be such a problem for some people.)
Note – The following cases are no problem. Attack buffs (march buffs) are applied.
– When participating in a rally / starting a rally by yourself
– When sending reinforcements / defending / attacking an occupied building on the map (Portal, Temple, etc.)

As someone who recently picked up Henry IV, it’s interesting to see that you have him ranked so highly. Seems many others are lower on him due to his smaller march size. Am I right that you are a little less concerned with march size, generally, than some others are?
No.
The rankings on this page are based on the performance of the main general ALONE.
Isn’t the ranking you saw based on the combined performance with assistants?
In that case, Henry IV might rank lower since he cannot be paired with Hermes (who has an extra-large march size).
Could you share the URL for the ranking you saw?
Hey, just a few places, e.g., Red Evony, a couple other youtube pages, etc. They seem to value the individual march sizes of some other generals more than Henry’s greater attack/def/HP stats. I don’t think any were based on pairings.
Even here, Louis XIV has 11% more march size. That seems sizable (and thus his greater Score 1). And it seems like a few people I’ve seen or talked to in the game value march size above all. To be clear, I’m not arguing with your rankings (I pulled the trigger on Henry as my main Mounted PvP general, so obviously I wasn’t holding out for a gen with greater march size), and I really like his buffs. Just wondering your opinion on march size + lesser buffs v. better buffs v. lesser march size
Checking again it was Red Evony, Evony Academy, and a post or two on reddit.
I have confirmed that what you refer to as “low evaluation by others” is not a comparison based on combination results.
In Red Evony, the basis for the low evaluation appears to be solely the march size, and it is not explicitly stated whether damage values, defense, or HP were also considered. However, I assume it is based solely on damage, without considering defense or HP. If defense and HP were factored in, a low evaluation would be impossible.
Evony Academy’s criteria resemble mine: a low rating occurs only when comparing damage values alone. When defense and HP are factored in, this is not the case.
Ultimately, your claim of “low evaluation by others” refers to my article’s Score 1 scenario, so I believe their perspective aligns with mine.
As outlined in the Assumptions section, the rankings in this article are listed with a score 3.
>march size + lesser buffs v. better buffs v. lesser march size
That’s an extreme argument. You can’t simply say one is superior.
For example, in attack, the larger the attack buff, the greater the “boost effect” on damage values from increased march size.
In other words, which is superior depends on the march size value and the values of other buffs.
For example, take Cheng Zhijie and Washington Prime against Henry IV. Both have smaller attack buffs than Henry IV but larger march sizes.
However, when comparing damage output, Cheng Zhijie outperforms Henry IV, while Washington Prime falls short.
Thank you for the detailed response and again, let me say I am not trying to argue or over-simplify. You’re my go-to source for everything Evony and I’m trying to do a better job of understanding methodology used by more experienced players. One question about the Cheng example you gave: If I could only choose one of Cheng and Henry IV to develop (and for this exercise, not worrying about who they might pair with), am I right that you’d recommend Henry over Cheng even though Cheng outperforms Henry IV in damage output, because of Henry’s HP and Def advantage? Or in other words, should the decision be decided by Score 3?
Thank you, again, for all the awesome work you do.
I apologize if I came across as intimidating. I’m simply trying to be as concise as possible.
Now, should you prioritize Score 3 or Score 1? That depends entirely on your values and circumstances.
When attacking an enemy castle with cavalry. This varies by player style, but you might attack even if the enemy castle still has archers.
For example, when trying to take down an enemy T1 cavalry castle. A situation where the enemy still has archers, but your current siege buff makes it difficult to reduce their numbers further. You’ve used Low Tier archers to weaken the enemy’s high-tier cavalry, but many enemy infantry remain, making it hard to gain positive points with Low Tier archer attacks. You want to use a Low Tier cavalry march to weaken the high-tier infantry. (Even if the enemy still has archers, this tactic can be somewhat effective. Depending on the buff difference.) etc.
In this case, having more durable cavalry increases the potential to defeat more infantry.
It also increases your chances of winning when attacked by enemy archer marches with slightly weaker buffs than yours, or conversely, when you attack them.
I do not underestimate such scenarios, which is why I rank them as Score 3 in this article.
However, if you do not prioritize such scenarios, I believe focusing on the ranking for Score 1 would be preferable.
Hello, why is there no Persian language in the settings menu?!?
Hi, I want to share my personal calculations on march size buff.
Everybody says that is very important and I agree.
I am considering it like the percent of troops you can add, so for example if is 10% march size increse you can consider 10% more attack + 10% more hp + 10% more defense.
I think this calculations are not distant from the real mechanics behind an evony battle.
Isn’t Cheng Yaojin’s attack speciality +80?
Yes. Are you not looking at Section B. See A.
Could you show the ascension of Sanada Yukimura in the attacking table when marching against monsters?
jayavarman can use the mounted attack, def, and hp skill book .
Will the adjustments allow King Arthur to rank?
The specs were enhanced on 2024/2/16, but it doesn’t rank at all.
Even at maximum development, it is still too weak.
(Especially critical is the almost non-existent growth due to specialties)
I continue to not recommend it.
Even if the comparison is made under the conditions of no specialties and no red stars, it is still very subtle because the March size skill book cannot be attached.
However, when used as an assistant, if you compare it without specialty, it is relatively excellent.
Can you upgrade the guide to include martinus skin?
Added.
The evaluation is almost the same with the skins on.
hello, sorry I didn’t know where to ask this question, please tell me which equipment is better to use When a large number of t1 horsemen are used as defense, and which wall generals are better to use.Thank you in advance for your help
It depends on how much emphasis you place on t1 cavalry, how much you deemphasize high level cavalry, what kind of enemies you are likely to encounter, and what kind of enemies you are likely to counter.
If you are defending with a lot of t1 cavalry & almost no high level troops, the equipment should be an all achaemenidae all cavalry flat-refine. This is because in this case the %-refine is not very important.
If you have a lot of high level troops of all types, ideally all civilization equipment, some achaemenidae if it is difficult. Armor & Leg armor should be cavalry HP flat-refine.
Reference
– Civilization Equipment – Recommended Combinations
– Red Equipment Combination List (Which Should You Make?)
For t1 cavalry defense, any defense generals can be used. I would say Boudica if I had to, but it is not a dramatic advantage. The reason is that in t1 defense, %-refine is not so important. (Raising Boudica does not increase flat-refine.)
Rather, Boudica is weak except for mounted troops, which is not recommended if you have a lot of high level troops of all types.
Hey, just found an error in a value by chance. Lysander has +10% rally size instead of +5%.
But aside from that, thank you again so much for your great wiki!!
Thank you very much for the donation!
and for pointing this out. Correction. In addition, it is 15% because specialty must be included.
What is the best combination for wall defense of we use J J (George) and who should be his assistant general?
And he work for T1 cav defense???
See below
Best Generals (& Combinations)
For t1 mounted troops defense, it makes no difference which defender you use. George is no problem.
In this case, because absolute value buffs are important, not % buffs.
If forced, Boudica is the best, but there is no dramatic difference from the others.

Thanks for the article. I do believe there is still merit in distinguishing between paying a lot and paying little. The big difference is not necessarily in terms of ability to obtain the general (although I would argue there is still a gap there, for example Bertrand Du Guesclin which I have not seen available as part of any event), but in the ability to develop all four specialities to its maximum. It is very unlikely that I will be able to do that, developing the fist three to Grandmaster is probably as far as I will be able to get.
Should I switch with Hannibal with martinus? I
It’s a subtle point. I don’t think there is any need to force a change.
Hannibal is easy to red-star but has no good assistants, and Martinus is the opposite (not easy, even though you can get him at the tavern).
However, if you can’t tolerate weakening during reinforcements, then Martinus is a good choice.
Thank you for your articles.
My question is, when an assistant is added and the same cavalry type general is used in PVP, after adding cavalry attack, defense, HP, and speed, what skill would you recommend adding one more?
Please see below.
Best Skill books Guide – what skills should you add?
Is martinus little buff got add if we reinforce our ally city?
i want to know who is better after ascending them to 10 stars.pls
I got custer last night and was able to add the mounted troop attack to him.
I can second this. Definitely able to add a mounted attack skillbook to Custer.
Thanks for the information!
Reflected in the article.
What is the process for trying to get Custer?
I got it from an epic general in a battlefield shop.
Hi, always thank you for precious information and opinion. I remember that you recommend mounted hp skills for martinus(So I added it for my martinus). But now I can see that you changed to recommend mounted defense skill. Can I ask the reason..? Thanks.
Can I ask about skills?
I want to know the reason why you recommned mounted hp skill than mounted defense skill?
Becasue I already added defence skill in my martinus TT
Defense skill is not bad. It is the same as in any game where fighting takes place. Attack is your sword, Defense is your shield and HP is HP. If your attack is very high, the shield is unnecessary. When you attack, even with a shield, you lose HP. Higher HP will help lower wounded. I suggest Roland as your assistant general and try to add mounted HP. Mounted HP for monsters is even better If you do not use him for PVP.
You can also use a different general as the assistant for PVP. Yue Fei also has mounted HP. LV4 mounted attack can be added to Yue Fei but you must add 3 different skills first. Lv1 attack cannot be added, only lv4
I am the one who told you about Bertrand’s skill book earlier. Leadership 117 +8.91, Attack 118 +8.91 Defense 114 +8.86 Politics 109 +8.65. Does the fact that it says “when leading the attack” mean that he is not as good for reinforcements as Hannibal? Thank you very much for your continued study.
Thanks for the information.
I can’t really recommend him for reinforcements.
If you have 4 specialties or 3 max, I would recommend Martinus or Li Jing.
I was able to add the cavalry attack skills to Bertrand du Guesclin.
Thank you for all your help and reference. I was able to put a lvl 4 cavalry attack skill book on Bertrand du Guesclin.
Thanks for the information.
where does James Bowie come as a wall general
I was lucky enough to get all three Hannibal, Martinus and Roland.
So, I delved in your article to make my final choice between the three.
Unfortunately we do not know how Defense and HP are used in the battle equation, so it is impossible to evaluate their contributions.
But still, based on the published values, I calculated the impact of their specialities taking into account their March Size buffs (e.g. 1 troop becomes 1.12 for Hannibal, and 1.18 for Roland).
T12 A Def HP
Mounted 10.989 8.199 21.652
Hannibal Martinus Roland Hannibal Martinus Roland
4 specialities 27.815 27.815 27.231 102% 102% 100%
10.101 10.101 13.061 100% 100% 129%
37.830 35.163 31.937 118% 110% 100%
3 specialities 23.385 22.154 23.989 106% 100% 108%
13.538 13.538 17.505 100% 100% 129%
14.769 17.846 16.209 100% 121% 110%
It is obvious that Roland is better with 3 specialities. But even with 4 specialities the differences look almost negligible.
So, I go with Roland, which for sure is better with 3 specialties. And even if I manage in the future to get all 4, I don’t lose much…I think.

at 27 and using theodora (mounted attack/mounted attack against monster/luck) for bosses. Is bird of hurricane better (+10%) or level three celtic dragon? Assuming bird of hurricane and put dragon on pvp attacker, but unsure. any help appreciated!
In that condition, it is a bird of hurricane.
With Celtic Demon Lv3, the mounted troop attack buff does not reach +10%. (You can exceed it by adding mounted troop attack with refinement, but don’t do it because Celtic Demon is for ranged troops.)

I am wondering why Hannibal and Roland reverse places based on whether or not you coin. Can you clarify that please?
I have answered similar questions in past comments.
I have Martinus Hannibal and Roland, I want to know which one is no 1 , with all speciality unlocked.
See section B.
I am at Lvl23 Keep. I just brought Li Jing up to 4 stars and L20, with Lvl4 Mounted HP, Lvl 4 Mounted Def and Lvl 3 Mounted Speed. Thought I was good.
Then today I got Martinus.
Do I focus on bring up Martinus and making him my guy? Or stick with Li Jing?
I recommend switching to Martinus.
Can I use Martinus as a mounted defence general?
Why do you prefer to add march size skill than mounted hp?
Please see below article’s premise section.
Best Skills Guide – what skills should you add?
Tengo una duda, creo que las habilidades de Wei Qing son distintas
> I have a doubt, I think Wei Qing’s skills are different.
I’ve checked and can’t find anything wrong.
If you are talking about the skill book, that is an example of use. There is no absolute correct answer.
The ranking doesn’t make sense anymore since you added gens from relics to the no pay section. The order shouldn’t be different when gens appear in both sections.
As I wrote in the assumption.
A) no pay – only 3 Specialty
B) a lot of pay – 4 Specialty Maxed out
Therefore, the order should different.
The 4th specialty has a huge impact on the ranking. Also, many people cannot master this. (reason)
General rankings by most Youtubers and websites lack this perspective.
Why did you recommended add Speed cav skill book instead of HP skill book?
It is explained in the following article.
Best Skills Guide – what skills should you add?
Why don’t you have Dmitry listed as a reinforcement general, with his “Hero of Don River” buff – Increase the ground troops’ defense and HP by 20% and ranged troops attack by 30% when General is leading the army to reinforce? He is the only general in the game with a reinforce buff, so wouldn’t it make sense to use him as reinforcement general?
This appears to be a rework of Dmitry with one of the latest updates to the game. I got him early on and just held on to him, but don’t recall him having this buff or skills previously.
Dmitry is not an excellent mounted general. He is good when reinforcing with ranged troops and is already listed in the rankings in the following article.
Best of Ranged PvP General
Hi, between Roland and Hannibal, who will be best for PvP and Boss? If so, is the difference much?
If you want only attack, it is as per the above ranking.
If you want double-item drops in boss hunting, both are inappropriate.
I also believe that it is impossible for one person to be both a PvP general and a Boss hunting general.
The reason for this is that the Boss hunting general needs to add skill to a “mounted troop attack against monster”. This is a skill that is completely unnecessary for a PvP general.
For more information, please refer to the following article.
Best of Boss General / Monster Hunter
Thanks for the response mate. I should have framed my question better. My actual query was, between Roland and Hannibal, who would you groom for PvP and whom for boss. My opinion was Roland for PvP as he is bit well rounded and Hannibal for boss as his attack buffs are insane. Your thoughts please?
It’s the same for me.
For monster hunting, attack is the most important thing, so Hannibal.
For PvP, both are fine, but Roland is the choice by process of elimination.
(HP and defense are also important when fighting archers and siege, but Roland has better defense and Hannibal has better HP. (Skill/Attributes))
However, if you prefer PvP to monster hunting, I recommend Hannibal for PvP and Roland for monster hunting.
Who is the best calvary general for reinforcements
I added the ranking when reinforcing.
I would recommend Martinus.
Hi. I am back with a question on the march size. In particular, what is the maximum march size only from the rally spot and research, at k30, k32 and k35 if possible? (Monarch’s horn, general’s skill and equipment are not taken into consideration)
Recently, when thinking about your suggestion of March size skill for general that cannot use skill of damage (Minamoto, Martinus, etc), I discover that at high level pvp battle, march size increase is better than damage percentage increase. However, as for monster hunter, maybe the necessary number of troop would not reach the maximum number that rally spot and research can provide. So I would be grateful if you can help me with those data.
Thank you so much.
I am so sorry. I read your article about March size again. It is not superior as I thought, though plays an important role still. So I think the answer is not necessary anymore. Sorry for disturbing you
The maximum values for march size, based on rally spot and research alone, are as follows
k30 – 660,000
k35 – 1,260,000
If other factors are added, most people will probably get the following. (If not using march size items)
k30 – around 760,000
k35 – around 1,400,000

Thank you so much
It would be great if you could give us an evaluation of Cyrus.
Added to the ranking.
I don’t think he is a very good cavalry general.
The focus is on cavalry + ranged troops, and it seems half-baked.
Can you make list of “Best of Mounted Hunting General”
Hello, thank you for your excellent work, it has been very useful! I would like an opinion: I won my second general Martinus. I already have one developed for PVP (skillbooks) and I am thinking of developing the new one for monsters. So, I would sell my Li Jing (I also have 4 Baibars). Does having 2 Martinus, both with dragons, make any sense? Thanks
It depends on the following.
– Which dragons you have.
– Which troop types you are focusing on and which ones you are discarding. Or not, you are raising generals of all troop types.
If you have the following dragons,
– Celtic Demon, Fafnir, Norway Ridge, and The Dragon of Thebes.
And if you are raising generals of all troop types, your dragons will have the following uses
– Ranged: Celtic Demon
– Mounted: Fafnir
– Defender: The Dragon of Thebes
– Ground: Norway Ridge
In this case, it would be better to assign the second Martinus a Hurricane Bird instead of a Dragon.

what the meaning PvP?
It means “Player vs Player”.
What About Yui Fei? Is he any good for PvP?
It’s not useless, but it’s hard to recommend it as the best cavalry general.
Please see the answer to a similar question below.
HI….so for mounted PVP, Takeda is better thn Li Jing? Wat abt monster hunting, who is better Takeda or Li?
If you want to increase the specialty to the maximum, Li Jing is the way to go. If you don’t, there is not much difference between the two.
This has been very helpful.
I don’t have enough information about Aethelflaed, and I think it is suitable for cavalry, but what do you think?
She is suitable for cavalry, but only for hunting monsters, not for PvP.
Also, if you assume that the specialty is maxed out and you use the mounted troop attack skillbook Lv4, her mounted troop attack will be +120%, which is inferior to Hannibal and Martinus (+126%).
(You can’t use the mounted troop attack against monsters skillbook on Aethelflaed.)
Therefore, it is not recommended to spend the cost and effort of specialty on Aethelflaed.
Buenas aprendiendo mucho de la página
Consulta cuál es mejor para montado si tendría Takeda shingen y khalid …… Para poder mejorarlo por favor espero su respuesta gracias
>Good learning a lot from the page
Consultation which is better for mounted if I would have Takeda shingen and khalid …… To be able to improve it please I wait for your answer thank you
————————————-
If you want to raise the specialty, Takeda Shingen will have more mounted buffs.
If you don’t consider specialty, neither is much different.
>Good morning, the two of them touched me in the tavern and I want to know which one is better for our bosses or both of them are for attacking castles. That is my question. I’m still new…. note what khalid means I attacked increased by 20% and 20% points respectively
I don’t think they are the best, but both are suitable for boss battles and castle attacks.
————————————-
Good morning.
However, if you want to increase the “specialty” of general in the future, Takeda Shingen is better than Khalid.
(But in that case, Martinus or Li Jing is better than them.)
“Specialty” is unlocked when the general’s level reaches 25. After that, you need to use a lot of items to raise it. It’s quite a challenge.
The “specialty” of each general can be found in their portraits in the tavern.

Thank you for all your informative articles.
I have a question.
You have created articles on ranged generals, ground generals, and mounted generals, but is there any need for siege generals?
In the previous article on the roles of generals, there was no mention of a general who specializes in siege, so I was curious.
If there is a point to raising siege generals, it would be nice to have an article about it.
Thank you for your time.
I have created an article.
Best of Siege PvP General
Is there an area where you explain cultivating? I don’t understand why it minus some basic skills when I hit the button.
Please see the following article.
General Cultivate Guide
I’m always learning from you. Thank you very much. Is Washington a bad general?
As I added to the article, if you don’t max out your specialty, he is pretty low rank. It’s also hard because of the low stats increase.
Even if you max out the specialty and use the skill book Lv4, he still has 81% cavalry attack (you can’t use the attack skill book), 35% HP, and 62% defense.
It’s hard to recommend him as the best general.
Is Yue Fei lower than Roland?
Assuming the specialty is maxed out, even if you use the skill book Lv4, it is only 91% mounted attack, 25% mounted HP, and 45% mounted defense.
Therefore, it is inferior to not only Roland, but also El Cid and Li Jing. It’s hard to recommend him as the best cavalry general.
Why is Ulysses Simpson not included?
Article has been updated. If the general’s specialty is assumed to be maxed out, he will not be included because the difference between him and the top generals is too great. If you only pay a little money, he is #1, but I believe it is conditional. Please refer to the special note for details.
What about Li Jing? I can’t give him a skill book attack, but I can give him a march size.
As I added in the section on “A) If you only pay a little money”, if specialty is not taken into account, even if you add march size, it is inferior to Martinus and Barbarossa.
If you take specialty into account, it is still inferior to Martinus.
It’s hard for me to recommend him as the best general.
