Right Ctrl Replaced By Co-Pilot

r/mildlyinfuriating - Right Ctrl Replaced By Co-Pilot

New work-issued HP EliteBook 840. I'd like to have a word with the moron that decided to replace right ctrl (a key I used daily) with a freaking Co Pilot key. Windows let's you remap the key to other apps, but not ctrl. Ctrl+Alt+Del to login at the lock screen and many other shortcuts are no longer one handed.

Our corporate laptops are very locked down so installing any third party work arounds is not an option.

We need to be careful with Co-Pilot, we might lose Ctrl

Get the fuck out of here.

We'll just have to power on through.

We're losing control to AI

312

My company's new CTO is such an AI evangelist, he has even said "if you're worried about losing your job to AI, don't be -- you will lose your job to a person who uses AI, though."

102

They are dumber and can be paid less, so they have a point. I personally can't wait for the absolute refuse from people over AI after billions of dollars spent that could actually help people. The LLM bullshit is going to hit a wall, maybe not soon but eventually and society as a whole agrees what its for. My bet is still on gaming, its perfect for a procedurally generated game. Past that where numbers matter its useless.

MS PowerToys can remap it back to being right CTRL though, never fear.

279

It's frustrating that this isn't built into the OS itself. I actually thought I would try to map this to Claude and... You can't! (with the stock tools).

Thanks for the tip!

112

Blaming everything on Claude... poor guy.

Good luck doing that on a corporate locked down laptop.

20

Going to depend on the IT folks at your employer, but you could always try putting in a ticket to have it remapped unless it's one of those stupid situations where your employer WANTS you to use a bunch of ai crap.

22

I asked the helpdesk for it and they gave it to me.

12

MS PowerToys may still be accepted, it's a first-party Microsoft app after all. Worth checking on the allowed software list.

ask your IT admin for a workaround or a replacement - they will be equally frustrated by this

59

They'll just close the ticket after 10 days with no fix.

39

Can you reopen it with a “problem not fixed” when they do?

Mess up their metrics, until they get it working.

THIS!!

All the laptops that come with that terrible key we install MSPT and remap it to ctrl before giving them to the end user

That image made me growl like a pissed off Tasmanian devil, that is super fucking annoying.

50

I mean does anyone actually use right ctrl though? 😂 not that anyone uses co-pilot, either. (Joking)

78

I have literally NEVER used the right Ctrl button in my entire life.

I work in a company on the mainframe, that button is enter, normal enter is just jumping lines on console so if they remove it, i cant enter commands

Yes I use it and this change is infuriating, especially since when you unmap it it maps to WINDOWS rather than back to rctrl

Such a shitty logo

9

whoever thought of the idea to add an AI key to your keyboard must burn in hell

9

The thing about that laptop that irritates me more is that the power button is between the end and delete keys in the top row.

How else are you supposed to know That's an AIPC and not just a PC

/Sarcasm

5

As a Canadian multilingual standard keyboard user this sucks a LOT

5

As someone who uses CTRL+ENTER shortcuts *ALL THE TIME* this would drive me absolutely insane.

5

Pry the key off.

8

That doesn't give me a right ctrl key.

I'd be less offended if they gave me a keyboard with human fecal matter smeared on it.

It might be cumbersome and against the nature of a laptop, but could you use a peripheral keyboard that hasn't been neutered? Either Bluetooth or USB? I wouldn't think that'd go against the regulations on 3rd party software, unless that includes drivers for new USB devices.

oof

I hit that stupid button during an exam in college and it popped up. Not easy to explain to the professor...

I still miss my Right Windows key, so you can lock your computer with one hand.
