Was a busy day for me, but wanted to put a quick guide out there on how to research an event in light of the recent Virtuacon discussion. Here's how to do legitimacy checks if you do not have representation, and here's that process using this as an example 🧵

The first thing to look for is a simple Google search for a company, event, etc. If it has poor/mixed/confused SEO or GEO, best to avoid. This event luckily has some related search items, their socials and some articles. On its surface, that passes.

It has a few PR article pieces, including one from gamespress, a UK based outlet, and it mentions a company called Ark Events. Looking up Ark Events, I found a company on Linkedin called Ark Events Group that had two employees listed.

Usual places I look at for company registration for a non US entity doesn't work, but I found a workaround. The director of Ark Events has a cofounded company called FansHub, which have an active buisness registry. What solidified that this was the correct line...

Was seeing a few industry connections I had on Linkedin with the director. So a company searchable on Linkedin, a way to check registration for another entity and ability to see the convention from usual searches. And also has partners that are trustworthy based on the article

Again, this all passes normal checks. However, when someone looks at an event, one of the big things to check for is how authentic is someone to the space? Or, another way, do they have ties to it? If not, are they being consulted by solid parties?

What is the plans for future shows? Since this was a free show and the angle was benefiting a charity, the question interested parties should ask is "how the show can continue to be sustainable" or "how does the con continue to find growth or new opportunities"

My opinion? Based on the signals I was getting from the interactions of the account, the company profile and headcount on Linkedin, the age of the event and subsequent histories of the leadership would have made me personally not progress forward with such an event.

My personal conclusions aside, if you follow this outline of checking through socials, Linkedin, checking to see if a company or potentially associated companies or owners of various companies have active buisness registries, you can navigate these types of asks with confidence.
