Regarding a certain "con", please let this be a lesson for streamers to all do their due diligence when it comes to vetting an opportunity, for your own sake.
At least just take 5-10 minutes to try and gauge their legitimacy upfront.
This one in particular was quite obvious (at least, it was to me) if you were looking for it! I received an email from them months ago, and with a brief few minutes research, decided there were too many red flags to risk bothering with, regardless of who they claimed to already be working with.
I know it is VERY easy to get excited about the chance to be a part of something cool, but it will save you a significant amount of time, energy, and heartache to just try and vet them by yourself (and not solely trusting the words/association of others) before agreeing to anything.
If anything seems off (e.g AI art, zero/little/very new online presence, very little clearly laid out info, etc), it's probably a safe bet to just not go through with it.
Stay safe and sane out there, folks. 🫡💙

The thing is, most of us sat down and had face to face conversations with the team, and they were VERY hands-on and reassuring, but as things moved forward it got stranger and stranger.

I've heard from a friend that everything seemed legit on the inside-- that being said, I don't think any amount of reassurance/competency from the folks working directly on it would've overridden the red flags of zero online presence & blatant AI art for me, personally... so I just never bothered to respond.
Please note I'm not trying to say this in a 'holier/smarter-than-thou' way!!
I completely get how everything combined can lead to someone wanting to trust and believe in something new/give them a chance. I've just been burned by business partners & individuals alike, so perhaps I'm a bit more cautious than most when I end up immediately seeing red flags.

They did have an online presence behind it, but I've learned that I was one of the few people who knew it was run by Fanshub, and that too is pretty shady that they didn't outright tell everyone.

Well, by online presence, I meant the con itself had zero online presence aside from very recently made & bare bones socials + a very blank website both primarily made up of aforementioned AI assets.
Imo, it would have been a different story if they were clear about the fact that they were backed/ran by some actual business (although not that it would've changed much in the end), but afaik, I don't remember seeing any extra information about who was behind it, what it really was, who was involved, etc, when looking it up myself months ago?
Although I'm pretty sure when I checked it out, it was maybe early Oct so there was hardly any info on their twitter at all either (before they had a link to their Discord on there).

This was information that we as participants got- that the event was a new thing they wanted to break into the VTubing scene with- that they were already an established company (but again I don't know who actually knew besides me that it was Fanshub), but wanted to try something new for vtubing fans. I know a lot of us involved had a lot more context than what they put out there on socials.
