Desktop Linux Just Keeps Winning

They could just rewrite core part of the kernel and even licence it under gpl, but have it rely on proprietary variant of rust compiler. This way nobody but them can compile it. Can look, can't touch. As for safety - Rust is known for creating memory safe rootkit holes.

With the official adoption of Rust, the Linux Foundation has embraced corporate slop.
I hope a few distros will excise that crap from the kernel.

Ah man, I am not happy about rust being in there. I know there are a lot of memes about it and cliche arguments and complaints about it, but I do not trust the future of rust, and I also don't think it is even a good language to use in general. The package manager is, or at least, hasn't been exactly stable. That's my humble opinion. But I am genuinely not certain that rust is going to be a "safe" in the future. Watch.... just wait and see. We will hear some bad stuff in a few years. EEE never forget.

GPL is better for opensource, no doubt about it. but developers coming from corporate/business backgrounds tend to not like it exactly because one of it's main features: forcing derived software to also be open.

To give an example, convincing game developes on using GPL varies from very hard to impossible - because they don't want their work to help competitors and want more control over what they develop. While I'm using GPL for my game, being realistic I do not expect any success on convincing other gamedev or corporate developer to adopt it, the world is a lot bigger than the FOSS community.

Well not my kind of system, my preference will probably stay Artix LxQt but still nice to see. Based users.

Linux is GPL the kernel, I don't think you can upstream other licenses into it, you can develop with a compatible license and then copy / paste it or "pull" it, but they will not add code that only has only a proprietary use case and is useless without it.

Also a average PC with linux-libre will just not boot or stay dark... I don't even know of 1 modern cpu/gpu architecture that runs with it, it's basically only useful to show that nothing works or to use in a VM, as sad as it is. The last gen that worked was my Thinkpad X220.

The Rust news is horrible.... But, I can't do anything and won't do anything .... just hope Rust won't make Linux worse...

The MIT license does not cover software patents, but the Apache license does. Thus everything under the MIT licence could end up being vehicles for submarine patents. It does not matter how you get the software, the patent is about what it does not where you got it from. Furthermore, the patent holders can wait years before cashing in, as long as they do so prior to the expiration of the patent. It's sad that it appears that no one learned anything from the GIF submarine patents from the 1990s.

Neither of these license are reciprocal so the end user loses out because the next tier of developers are technically allowed to take the code proprietary and strip off the freedom.

I have a feeling that 2026 is actually going to be the year of the Linux desktop for real. Fingers crossed
