Before coming to Japan, some friends mentioned that my future place in Akasaka was going to be boring and that I'd likely need to get as way from the area to get to most fun times. Now, granted, I live in a building really near Akasaka Itchome Station, so it's really quiet, but they also told me there was a bar area (Akasaka Mitsuke) that was likely overpriced and uninteresting (for playtime activities).

After I moved, I wanted to test this out by going to the area and I noticed something interesting: Akasaka Mitsuke was a bit boring when I first got here and quickly transformed into a slightly more expensive (upscale?) version of Gotanda passed 22h00.

There are a few Chinese female touts, but also Chinese male touts and Japanese touts who will try to either drag you into their establishment or offer you FS for a price (between 12-20k). The places the touts take you to all seem to have street signs and aren't filled with small stalls that have that distinct stench of bad cigarettes, terrible booze, and broken dreams. The places are a bit roomier too (Oasis has a fucking gigantic shower room).

Walking through at night, I increasingly get approached by touts who are super eager to get my patronage in their establishments and some fairly hot Chinese ladies looking to give you a grand old time at a nearby hotel (they'll even offer to help you with the intake if I can't manage well enough in Japanese). There are more FS places that advertise as esthe or massage parlours. These places, that used to be filled with older women) increasingly have younger very eager girls (depending on where you go, Chinese, Korean, and sometimes Japanese).

Has anybody noticed these fairly rapid changes in the area? Am I just noticing because I am somehow looking? Maybe key people now recognize me as a Chinese-speaker, but I often get approached in Japanese.

It's been super fun just wandering around the area at night, but I haven't seen too much written about the redlightification of the area, so I figured I'd ask to see if anybody else is seeing this.

It's nothing new or recent. Akasaka Mitsuke has been that way for decades at least. It offers both some of the most upscale exclusive drinking establishments in the nation for the politicians and related that frequent there and also the bottom of the barrel, which you have identified.

Thanks, I was suspecting that I was noticing it more and that it might not be a recent change. Was looking for a bit of a reality check on this from others who are well versed in all the fun places.

Thanks, much appreciated.

During the Bubble it had some of the priciest rents in central Tokyo along with the Ginza. Bubble burst left a lot of empty bar flats and other mizu shobai vacant once the expense accounts dried up. Later, various businesses came and went. There are still plenty of very high end restaurants and clubs (the kind with little or no signage) where the pols and powerful do their entertaining. You can often see some very nice cars, both with drivers and high end European exotic cars in the area. No coincidence Bingo Sports has a showroom there (search bingo sports akasaka).

Yeah there is some super pricy stuff but somehow the last few times I went it felt really Gotanda-ish with the touts and the street walkers. I think this might just be my perception, though, because it couldn't have changed that much in a couple of months. Maybe the Chinese touts now know me and have pointed me out to the others, which also changes the offerings from meagre to banquet.
