START UP error (probably fix for you guys)

What annoys me in this forums is that there are a few people whining about a startup error (blackscreen etc) without reading any other discussion in this forum.

I KNOW Rebellion won't give you a refund because they just bought the game to keep it alive. You all should be happy that they are even trying to keep a great game like this alive.

But this is not the reason why I've created this thread. I've created this thread for those whiners who can't search a forum for answers or just won't respond.

Anyway for some background information: I'm on Windows 7, 8 and 8.1. The problem first existed on the Windows 7 machine. Probably due the lack of "video" codecs. SO here's what i've done, and it worked for me.

- Keep in mind I'm happy to help so let me know if it's working or not.

Step 1 - Make sure you have the latest drivers for your PC.
IMPORTANT NOTE - You may be prompted to restart and please do follow this request because it's important for your driver to startup. Tho I recommend to wait with this startup until the end of this tutorial because almost every step needs a restart.
Step 2 - Make sure you have the latest Bink video format. The game uses this "outdated" video codec for playing his cinematics and most recent operating systems like Windows 7, 8, and probably 10 doesn't use this codec anymore. Anyway download and install the Rad Tools from here[www.radgametools.com].
Step 3 - You may now restart your PC.
Step 4 - If you got an secondary screen it's recommended to turn this one off and set your personal setting to Windows basic instead of Aero themed.
Step 5 - Start up the game and PLEASE let me know if it's working or not.

I don't have access to the sourcecode, only some simple modding code.

A fix for "CD Key not found" error that worked for me:

check if there exist a registry entry of "Massive Entertainment AB" (Win+R -> regedit -> Ctrl+F -> Massive Entertainment)
if there is no such enties - reinstall the game

if the entry is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Massive Entertainment AB,
and you have 64bit Windows - you need to copy that entry to Wow6432Node (in regedit right click on Massive Entertainment AB "folder" -> Copy -> right click on Wow6432Node "folder" -> Paste). Result may look like:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Massive Entertainment AB

In this case error was because CD key was for 32bit Windows... and under 64bit Win game dont have access to it

i found out if you unlpug any usb like headset or wireless controller it will start up the game

I tried pretty much all other fixes and somehow this made the game run flawlessly from fresh install. I dont understand but i wont complain

Maybe it can help somebody. I delete Mystic Lights in control panel/ devices and printers, and game starting.

on Microsoft Windows 11 when I start 10 to 15 the game runs crazy

Only way I could make it to launch is by going to the executable folder, set it to Win95 compatibility mode, and then double-click the executable to launch it.

If it fails, try to launch again, again. and again. and again and again and again. I need sometimes 20 tries, sometimes 80, sometimes 50, no way to find a pattern. Steam is usually running in the background (but it doesn't register in game time tho in the steam app).

Keep trying again and again, it will work eventually...

My findings so far (on Win 11 x64, latest updates as of the time of writing):

3d_device 0 - not required
Compatibility mode - not required (but I do have "Run as admin" checkbox set).
It crashes inside dinput.dll:EnumDevicesA (more specifically in RtlpAllocateHeapInternal called from dinput.dll). Tried different versions of the DLL - the same.
It launches once out of 10-30 attemtps and then works fine.
It launches every time if I turn off or unplug my "gaming" keyboard!!! Once in the main menu I can turn the KB back again and play.

And what did you try from the checklist up here.. What OS do you have?

this is a stupid arguement
I'm sorry we are ruining a game for you because you can't ignore them
unless you are the original dev your feelings of personal insult is simply misplaced
people want to play but can't and it's ruined for them too

that being said thanks for the fix attempts currently going through them and see if it fixes the game
