Why is the 3rd game in a strategy series often cursed? >HW3 sucks >AoE3 sucks >DoW3 sucks >Victoria 3 sucks >HoI 3 sucks >Civ 3 sucks >Stronghold 3 sucks >CoH 3 sucks I think devs simply fail to innovate on the originality and refinement of the prior titles and end up flopping

Civilization thread: I know I'm late, but I finally tried Civ VI with all its DLCs, holy moly the downgrade. Civ V(anilla) still invictus. Not only it's more tedious, but the DLCs don't add anything fun, immersive (they just unnecessarily overcomplicate things for the sake of it, to make you waste more time while trying to trick into thinking the game is more deep when it's not) and the artstyle is kinda shit. At some moment it becomes good, fun or I need overhaul mods? Is Civ VII worth it? PD: when the gameplay (specially the combat) is going to be like in the cinematic trailers (massive cities, massive armies, massive world to 4X'd)?

morale: -units in the presences of units dying lowers "morale" -when morale is too low, unit deserts - becomes a gaia unit, unusable -tech (religious, political, etc) can raise and armor morale -ex. one tech prevents morale loss from your units dying, another tech prevents morale loss from enemy villagers units dying Why? Greater verisimilitude and strategy.

Empire at War: are Sith not that good?: All guides i find online write that Darth Vader is one man army super unit that can take planets in ground battle at his lonesome, but i found him to be too underwhelming. what he is great blaster magnet and that's it. Emperor is kinda weak as well. Jedi hero on other hand are all fucking OP as hell. Kenobi can auto heal, is tanky as hell, way more tankier than vader anyway, Luke is very fast and you can turn invisible and run away if he's low on HP, and yoda IIRC can auto heal as well. General Veers is Empire's MVP of ground combat. he can spam units and his range is almost like artillery unit. and how you use Boba Fett in ground combat? his jetpack is good if you need to run away, but other than his flamethrower, he's just bit tankier stormtrooper (against anything other than infantry, he's useless)

Dawn of War: Definitive Edition: It's unfortunate that the Definitive Edition for Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War completely failed to address the biggest thing that's holding it back from unlocking its multiplayer potential. The lack of information transparency. The game tells you like 10% of the things you need to know to properly utilize your units. >This unit has armor type (Heavy) Infantry and it's good against Infantry and/or Heavy Infantry. Majority of units in the game, but there's a huge difference in how and why they are effective against Infantry or Heavy Infantry. Then you get situations where you are clueless until you experience it, if you see then comparatively unique armor types like Commander or Daemonic, and even then it makes a big difference on what kind of unit is having this armor type. The most straightforward group is Vehicle armor type - most units that claim to be good against Vehicles are, in fact, good against the Vehicle armor type. But some of them are also great at ruining infantry compositions despite not being good against them, some are useless against infantry unless it's a small unit size squads... etc etc. I think it would've been much better if the game just straight up listed the weapons the units use and explained exactly how each weapon type generally works and what are the weapon's advantages and disadvantages. Like get rid off "this unit is good against X" and instead "this unit has [weapon], which is effective against [armor type AND what quantity/quality we're talking about][+ any special ability of the unit's weapons]. And then, instead of blindly relying on vague "good against" tips, you can go down into the minutia/balance issues, how the Heavy Bolter for Space Marines is actually superior to Plasma Guns in 99% of cases because the Plasma Guns don't do enough damage in their niche, and their only real advantage is that you can fire them (very inaccurately) on the move, unlike Heavy Bolters which need to be set up. We need a Spirit of the Dawn.

Bookmarks in Paradox games:: It's strange to me how they've gone from what feels like a major part of the game to a mostly forgotten side feature to something that has been totally removed in everything but CK3. It's especially noticeable in the context of EU5, with many people wishing the game had featured a different start date. What caused them to fall out of popularity, either with the game developers or the fans, so much?

FAQ is discussion of other victorias welcome? Yes! Can I come here to complain if I never played the game? No Are the dlcs worth it? Some are, some aren't Like all paradox games it depends on what you want, ask around What do I do at the start of the game? Build up a supply of construction goods to reduce construction costs How do I reduce the price of a good? Subventions are the easiest way to do it, otherwise you have to produce the good yourself or get a deal with a power that produces said good Why are my states not buying anything from the market! States need trade centers to reach the global market, a trade center needs access to a port to function Meaning if you are landlocked you might have to go to war or sign a treaty I signed a transit treaty with a country and my trade centers still won't trade? That is because you need merchant marine to trade, which is produced by ports If you have no ports of your own you need to "buy" merchant marine by signing a goods transfer treaty with another power Why is russia being a dick? Best city builder in your opinion? >Cities: Skylines Shitties of them all in my opinion. In this one you have shit like 16 people living in a skyscraper and you can't even build realistic sized cities. The traffic simulation is supposed to be good but its nonsensical (drivers are incapable of changing lanes, the game puts pedestrian crossings through roundabouts etc.). >Cities: Skylines 2 Not even top tier computers can run this past a certain city size. >Simcity 4 You can build massive cities in it. Its a shame that the game was designed to build american style cities though (no mixed zones, no public housing, etc.). Game runs like shit too because of its old engine. >Citystate 2 This is the best one in my opinion. Economics makes sense and you have neat details like poor people building slums if you can't fill their housing demand either through making enough housing zones or building public housing units. There is also an entire legislation system that allows you to make anything between a communist hellhole and an anarcho-capitalist dystopia. I wish the game was moddable though.

>starting a new country from nothing is fun >exploring the map is fun >claiming valuable land and resources is fun >developing your economy and infrastructure is fun >defending your borders from barbarians is fun >fun stops when you get to war because while you were busy building a nice country another player was just spamming troops and rushing military technologies so you just get stomped with doomstacks for merely existing I genuinely wish there was a game that was based ONLY around this early phase of every civ game where you explore the map, expand your borders and grow your economy without the part where some agressive player rapes you. This game has spoiled me as far as QoL in gaming goes I don't care if you like it or not, if you're a SucKom moldy sandwich hugger or campaignlet or whatever, what I'm saying is that the QoL that this game has introduced is by far the best experience in controlling anything in an RTS and makes me uncomfortable to play anything else now. I want this level of easiness to play to another game like Age of Empires or even Starcraft clones. Runs on any potato seamlessly with 8v8 people as well, looks incredible, is a proper sandbox and supports modding as well on top of being free. But I don't want more BAR. I want others to realize how much they have been sucking lately and how mogged can they be. I want more RTS with different flavors and rules in my life, not only more TAs, but with this level of quality.

Heroes of might and magic Older Era: Your thoughts on the demo? So far what's your favorite: >faction >unit >hero Personal I found myself gravitating toward Dungeon the most. It got some really nice line-up. I think minotaurs and medusas are my favorite. In term of heroes I don't have yet favorite, but I like the dragon guy from Dungeon and the black armored guy from Necropolis.

Are there any other historical strategy games in the same time period as Victoria 2?: I do not play a lot of strategy games but I love Victoria 2 mostly because it is my favorite time period and I love history. I have tried Victoria 3 and I did not like it. I’ve been playing Europa Universalis V lately as well but I’m not enjoying it that much. I’ve tried HOI4 and CK3 but didn’t like them either. I also didn’t like Civ 6. Despite not liking basically any other strategy games other than Victoria 2 it’s probably my favorite game. Are there any other strategy games I might like?

What's next?: So, given fairly successful release of EUV it is certain that no Paradox shutdown will be happening in foreseeable future. That begs the question - what's next? Both Stellaris and HoI4 will be decade old next year. And while HoI4 is still very popular, Stellaris is falling more and more behind while getting plagued with technical issues, bugs, shit performance and the botched 4.0 rework. Maybe We will see Stellaris 2 announced next year? Or will they just keep milking these games until last drop? Any other ideas?

Much simpler than the Dom series, but still has a lot of the variety and depth. What are you favourite classes? There are loads of great ones, so I can't decide which one I like the most. I ended up liking the Witch and Cloud Lord a bunch which I was surprised by.

Story of Seasons / Stardew Valley / Rune Factory / Harvest Moon / Farming & Life Sims: Why did Marvelous abandon the Trio of Towns formula? >multiple towns with different aesthetics and strong identities >food effects encourage cooking variety >crops have 4 different qualities, plus giant and golden crops >animals have 4 qualities as well >festivals below the highest difficulty only judge a selection of qualities, necessitating different fertilisers/treats than your default >father has a rad nickname in the festivals that aged wonderfully It's hard to play other farming sims after that. Throwing fertiliser at crops and getting a "chance" that they'll get a star next to their name. But only that one time, next sowing season you start from 0 again, whether you make seeds from good crops or not. Gay ass waifus. Half-baked combat thrown into every game. Why not make farming good and cut the rest? Trio of Towns will have its 10th anniversary next year and in my mind it hasn't been surpassed since. You know the staples. What would you change to improve the genre?

I don't like how in EU5 armies can instantly retreat. What bothers me most is that they already had a very servicable system in ck2, where routing a flank puts that flank into a rout phase where they deal 0 damage and slowly leave the battlefield, but the other side still deals damage, and manually retreating puts every flank into the retreat phase until they all leave the battlefield. Why didn't they just do that? I mean it was far from perfect, they could have done something different, but as it is there isnt even a placeholder, they just leave.

AOE2/WC3 Hybrid: I am currently in the early stages of developing a real-time strategy game that aims to combine elements from Age of Empires II and Warcraft III. Both of these titles have had a major influence on me as a player and as a designer. Age of Empires II is remarkable for its strategic depth, focus on economic management, and large-scale battles, although I have always felt it is somewhat limited in a few key areas, such as unique unit mechanics and hero-focused gameplay. Warcraft III, on the other hand, introduced those very features through its heroes, abilities, and more character-driven armies, yet it lost some of the depth found in other systems, particularly in the balance of ranged units, counter mechanics, and naval warfare. My goal is to create a game that brings together the strongest qualities of both styles. I want to capture the grand scale and tactical complexity of Age of Empires II while incorporating the individuality, progression, and fantasy-driven personality of Warcraft III. The idea is to give players the satisfaction of building a thriving civilization and commanding large armies, while also offering memorable units, meaningful choices, and greater variety in strategy. I would love to hear from the /vst/ community about what you would like to see in a project that blends these two approaches. Which mechanics or ideas from either Age of Empires II or Warcraft III do you think are essential to preserve, improve, or completely rework? I am also open to suggestions for other RTS games that might serve as good sources of inspiration. Whether they are classic titles or more recent releases, I would really appreciate your thoughts on what makes those games stand out and what lessons they might offer for this project. Thank you in advance for your insights. I am looking forward to hearing your ideas and discussing what could make an RTS like this both exciting and rewarding to play.

Hardest RTS campaigns?: I'm currently playing Earth 2140 on NORMAL and holy fuck. I'm 20 hours in and haven't finished the UCS campaign yet. Granted, some missions were harder than needed because I didn't realize you could call in reinforcements on some maps, BUT >Maps are a grind and sometimes come down to who runs out of resources first >I'm convinced the Devs are downright evil. They know the pathfinding for UCS mechs sucks, and the maps are a combination of chokepoints, cliffs, and destroyable terain you have to manually target. UCS air sucks so you have to grind them down with mechs all the time if you don't have the SHADOW vehicle that gives stealth to your mechs >One of the Scandinavia missions has you approach an enemy base from two sides with a 1 tile chokepoint on each sides. Your mechs stack up and die really easily. The UCS navy sucks, and you don't have air in that mission forcing you to grind them down wave by wave hoping to snipe some of their important buildings >Many missions start you in the middle between multiple enemy bases and they assault you immediately. >Constant raids by enemy air and land transports full of infantry that capture your buildings and blow them up. >Also, if the objective is to capture a building and you take it, they'll actively try to retake it and blow it up, failing the mission for you. >Scripted attacks all over the place This truly was a time when devs didn't give a fuck. I've heard that the Warcraft 2 expansion is hard but I haven't played it. Recommend some ball busting campaigns

Early 00's strategy game that I haven't seen anyone mention in my entire adult life. I remember it being unique because you public opinion was a key currency. As totally-not-NATO that involved airlifting civilians out of conflict zones, and as the bad guys it involved sending TV crews to film you blowing up enemy troops and enemy atrocities. The better your rep, the more advanced units you could bring in. Actually pretty surprised few games tried to make public opinion part of gameplay. They said the same shit in 2016 with Wh1 and they cut it anyway to made a DLC with it. In Wh3 you have an entire free fountain of blood in "Khorne's realm", yet you still need the blood DLC for the combat. Civilization - Tech Trees: Been playing some civ6 coop recently and tinkering with mods. I don't think I wanna play with a big tech overhaul mod, at least not for coop, but the placement of Men At Arms is really annoying me. You get them with Apprentice as is, the big medieval econ tech, sure they require iron, but they're still a bit too accessible and they kinda squash the earlier eras. my idea >Blue moving men at arms from Apprentice to Military Engineering. >Green adding Engineering and Mathematics as prereqs for Castle(and Coursers) >Red adding Iron Working as a prereq for Military Engineering adding Machinery as a prereq for Gunpowder Halberds and Crossbows might still be too easy to get, and Men At Arms is still kinda accessible, but at least it's not bundled with the great economics techs. I think this would make the games play a bit better, and it's not too arbitrary. I know you have to handwave the techs a little at times, and figure when a tech is named after a subject they're trying to refer to a certain level of expertise in the subject, but still I think you can tune it a little better without it being too messy. With the units and number of techs that exist in the game, maybe it isn't possible to really rearrange things in a fully satisfying way, but Men At Arms have felt especially awkward. Which tech tree grievances do you have?
