Audio Analysis

Mains Hum Audio Analysis

What is mains hum?

Mains hum is low-frequency noise caused by electrical power sources, often picked up by audio equipment due to electromagnetic interference or poor grounding. The fundamental frequency varies based on regional power standards: it is 60hz in North America, parts of South America, and parts of Japan, while it is 50hz in most other regions. The harmonics of mains hum, which are multiples of the fundamental frequency, include 120 Hz/180hz/240hz for 60hz systems, and 100hz/150hz/200hz for 50hz systems. These harmonics are frequently present in recordings as well.
There can be multiple sources of hums in audio recordings, and not all are necessarily directly related to the power line, such as computers, monitors, LED lights, fans, phone chargers...

From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mains_hum

Mains hum, electric hum, cycle hum, or power line hum is a sound associated with alternating current which is twice the frequency of the mains electricity. The fundamental frequency of this sound is usually double that of the local power-line frequency: that is to say, 100 Hz in areas with 50 Hz power, and 120 Hz in areas with 60 Hz power. The sound often has heavy harmonic content above 50/60 Hz. Due to the presence of mains current in mains-powered audio equipment as well as ubiquitous AC electromagnetic fields from nearby appliances and wiring, 50/60 Hz electrical noise can get into audio systems, and is heard as mains hum from their speakers.

Mains Hum

https://www.open.edu/openlearn/history-the-arts/recording-music-and-sound/content-section-6.2

Anything electrical that is plugged into the mains can be susceptible to hum. Mains electricity is an alternating current, whereas something like a battery provides direct current. In the UK the mains voltage is about 240 V, with a frequency of 50 Hz. Most of Europe has a voltage of 220 V at 50 Hz, while the USA has a voltage of 110 V and a frequency of 60 Hz.
The voltage doesn’t cause noise, but the fact that it is alternating and not direct current can cause problems. The 50 Hz frequency (in the UK and Europe) can interact with some components inside electrical devices such as transformers, and can cause a vibration which is audible as a hum. The fundamental frequency of this hum is usually 50 Hz, (or 60 Hz in the USA), but just like a musical instrument, this can have a number of additional harmonics.

ENF Power Signature

https://www.mast.umd.edu/research.php?t=enf

The Electric Network Frequency (ENF) is the frequency of power distribution networks in power grids; it is nominally 60Hz in North America and 50Hz in most other places. The ENF does not stay at this nominal value, but fluctuates around it due to changing loads in the power grid. What makes the ENF useful for forensic purposes is that it can be captured by audio or video recordings due to electromagnetic influences.

The hum that helps to fight crime

https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-20629671

"The power is sent out over the national grid to factories, shops and of course our homes. Normally this frequency, known as the mains frequency, is about 50Hz," explains Dr Alan Cooper, a senior digital forensic practitioner at the Met Police.
Any digital recording made anywhere near an electrical power source, be it plug socket, light or pylon, will pick up this noise and it will be embedded throughout the audio.

Exploring Power Signals for Location Forensics of Media Recordings

https://sigport.org/sites/default/files/docs/10Hertz_Paper.pdf

Electric network frequency is a newly developed emerging technology of today. This inherent feature of audio and video recordings is a foolproof method for forensic analysts to determine their authenticity and to retrieve the time and location of the original signal recording.
Although the variations maybe random there can be found a regularity to its fluctuations about the nominal value, which is 60Hz in North America and 50Hz in most other places.
The recorded ENF might contain harmonics as well, which might have a power higher than the fundamental frequency. So harmonics are to be considered in analysis of ENF; even though harmonics above 3rd harmonic might not be useful due to their contamination by lower frequency audio signals
The ENF components of electric grids are centered either at 50Hz or 60Hz and their first harmonics fall around 100Hz and 120Hz.

How can mains hum be used to determine location?

Mains hum can be analyzed by transforming an audio file into a visual representation, such as a spectrogram. A spectrogram displays audio signals in terms of frequency (y-axis) over time (x-axis). Identifying a consistent peak at either 50hz or 60hz on the spectrogram indicates the presence of a hum. Additionally, harmonics such as 100/150hz for a 50hz hum, or 120/180hz for a 60hz hum, can also be observed, reinforcing the identification of the fundamental frequency. Typically, a hum appears as a continuous peak rather than a brief transient sound, making it distinguishable in the spectrogram analysis.

Hiding the Hum: Why it's not always visible
  • A professional audio setup significantly minimizes or masks mains hum to get clean voice audio free from external noises.
  • Band-pass and Low-pass Filters cut off frequencies below a certain threshold that are normally inaudible to the human ear.
  • A noise gate selectively allows only audio signals that exceed a specified volume threshold to pass through. This means that when someone is not speaking, the gate prevents any background noise, including hum, from being transmitted, resulting in minimal detectable sound.
  • A compressor reduces gain when music or game audio is playing to prevent clipping. By lowering the overall volume, compresors diminish the relative visibility of an already quiet hum.
  • Vtubers and professional streamers use audio interfaces or mixers that feature built-in real-time filters to get cleaner audio.
  • BGM and game audio can mask hum.
Due to these reasons it's rare to find visible traces of mains hum in professional audio recordings.

Tools used

I downloaded and examined spectrograms of various videos, focusing particularly on watchalongs, which lack BGM or game sounds, and VR streams as typically they use a different microphone setup that may not be subjected to the same filtering as the main setup.

I've also tested other vtubers with known locations to check if the main hums that were visible in their recordings were 50hz or 60hz, and all of them matched the expected result: Other Vtubers.

To download the audio of a youtube video I used yt-dlp (this will generally be around 60mb/hour): yt-dlp https://youtu.be/example -f bestaudio -o downloaded_audio
Then I used ffmpeg to convert the downloaded audio into an uncompressed WAV (resulting file will be around 600mb/hour): ffmpeg -i downloaded_audio -c:a pcm_s16le uncompressed_audio.wav
Finally, opening the WAV into a software to display its spectrogram. I used iZotope RX as it has useful functions to focus on specific amplitude and frequency ranges, but even something like Audacity should work in most cases.
No amplification/compression/filtering/audio or image altering of any kind was done for anything on this page.

Dec 23 2021 - Wrapping Gifts

Part 1 Spectrogram
Part 2 Spectrogram:

This stream shows an interesting pattern: cyclical spikes at 50hz and its harmonics occur approximatey every 13 to 15 minutes intervals, each lasting around 10 minutes.
This behavior is consistent with the operation of an electronic device, such as a refrigerator compressor, air conditioner, or electric heater controlled by a thermostat.
When the device activates, it draws a significant from the AC line, which increases electromagnetic interference and ground noise. This leads to stronger 50hz harmonics in the recording. This hypothetical heater would be turning off when the temperature reaches the set point and turns on again when it drops below this threshold.
In later streams, we observe the same device operating during warmer months, suggesting it might be a general HVAC unit that provides both cooling and heating functions.

In the stream she says she won't be able to spend Christmas with her family this year and will have to send them their wrapped gifts.
Later she tweets that her family "surprised her for Christmas" and she cancels her scheduled streams to spend time with them:

Other Vtubers - Establishing accuracy

I validated the above data by benchmarking it against recordings of vtubers with publicly known locations.

Ping & System Specs

Introduction

Ping is used to measure latency, that is the round-trip time (RTT) for how long it takes one packet to go from your computer to another and back. Latency depends on various factors, including routing path and how many hops they go.

Latency can be made worse by network conditions, but never better than what distance allows.
High ping is NOT proof of high distance, as it's possible to take a bad route, be using a VPN, having a bad connection generally, etc.
Low ping, however, IS proof of low distance, or at least rules out long distance.
It is possible for someone in Los Angeles connecting to a server in San Francisco to have a 200ms ping.
It is NOT possible for someone in Berlin to connect to a server in San Francisco and have a 80ms ping.
So while having a high ping is not proof the other end is far away, having low ping is effectively proof of short distance.

In this Apex Legends stream she positioned her overlay in the dead center of the screen, where the ping to the server is sometimes shown (see the Oct 30 2020 Amelia clip).

They are playing on a Japanese server and her game is noticeably laggy. At 18:02 Gura hits an enemy with the hammer and about 300ms pass between the hit spark on the enemy and her game receives feedback and her ultimate is charged.
After 2:04:00 they change game regions to America and it does not get much better for her. At 2:43:10 she attacks again and there is a comparable delay between her hit spark and the ultimate getting charged.

Sep 4 2024 - Minecraft (high ping)

https://youtu.be/72SJQRQ7qi0?t=13483
She has only 1 bar to the server hosted in Japan, while everyone else has 4 or 5.
From my research, 5 bars in Minecraft translates to <100ms, 4 bars to 100-300ms, and 1 bar is over 1000ms, which makes the high ping an anomaly high regardless of location.

Apr 13 2025 - REPO (ping)

REPO collab with Kronii (host, NA, 88ms), Raora (Japan, 170ms), Kiara (EU, 154ms): Pic
A NA server fits with everyone's pings.
Kronii's ping of 88ms is high enough to indicate the server is not very close to her location.
Gura's 120ms ping is low, but not low enough to rule out she's connecting from outside North America.

Note: during this and some other REPO streams the ping glitches between showing the same number for everyone.

Jan 2 2024 - Kiara Plans

I haven't been able to confirm if this is true, or what Kiara says in her members stream.
In a members only stream Kiara talks about her intentions to go on a trip around Europe and mentioning Scandinavia, in company of "a mystery member who is not in Advent or Mori". She says she would not be streaming or tweeting during this trip, even though she does that with all her other vacations with other members.

Jun 4 2024 - Possible slip-up

https://youtu.be/nUYz6DF_ick?t=7322
This stream started at 8PM EST. At 2h02m she says "I've been training all... afternoon with miku". She possibly caught herself saying "day" or "night" and overcorrected to "afteronon" as it was 10PM EST.

Jun 29 2025 - Possible time slip-up

https://youtu.be/H_Nc-zjRmK4?t=7247
Her second stream as Saba started at 5PM EST. At 2h00m48s she ends the stream with "have an nice... day, no... night? have a nice evening?". She then appears to be looking at the bottom right corner of a monitor, where the Windows calendar usually is, and says "Have a nice start to your week", when it was 7PM EST but 1AM in Europe.

Local PC time

This is superfluous, as she was already messing with the times on her PC and Switch by mid 2021. See her first RE2 and RE8 streams. Also Amelia was doing the same thing setting her PC/Switch from PST to EST.

From someone else's post:

I'm not the Hz rentry guy, but I thought I'd provide proof that the private window trick is worthless, at least for Saba.

The other day, one of you said that she's in the US because her stream said GMT -4 using the "opening the pre-stream frame in a private window" trick.
In response, someone else said they changed their PC time and tested it, and it showed the fake timezone on their upcoming stream, implying that Saba might be doing the same.
Someone then said that he should provide proof that Saba knows how to change her PC time.
In late 2021 and even a year later in 2022, Gura began to change the time on her PC to PST, even though she continued to talk about being on the East Coast.

This lines up with the time when she supposedly moved out of the country. If it's true, then it's likely that after she moved, she saw her PC was using her local time and decided to change it so that it would look like "US time", but she chose the wrong time zone because she's a bit of a dumdum.
During Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil 8 DLC streams, her time was behind by exactly 3 hours from EST time. Note that you can't see her current system time during any particular save, but you can see the time of the previous save when overwriting it on subsequent saves.

https://youtu.be/OKFm4d20NJU?t=2414

Notice that while she was saving it here, it says her first save was made at 11/02/2022 17:38:56 instead of 20:38:56.

So this is definitive proof that not only does she know how to change her PC's time, she started doing it for some indiscernible reason in the second half of 2021 and continued doing it throughout all of 2022. This means that the private window trick is unreliable at best, as she has demonstrated that she has deliberately set the wrong time zone for her PC in the past.

Considering all the data analyzed, this is, to the best of my ability, a comprehensive timeline of her movements between the US and elsewhere:

Before Sep/Oct 2021: US

  • No reason to believe otherwise. Her recordings and watchalongs have clear 60hz hums as far as the Aug 28 2021 DMC3 stream.
  • Streams around August and September have heavy audio filtering making analysis harder, possibly caused by her GoXLR resetting.
  • The Jul 31 stream has some 50hz hum, but it's not the same 50/100/weak 150/200 that constantly shows up in later streams.
  • There's some 60hz hum in the Aug 28 stream.
  • I don't know how to explain the above anomalies, unless she was traveling back and forth during a time of travel restrictions between many countries at the time.

Sep/Oct 2021 to Jun 2022: not US

  • Her streaming environment changes sometime in September or October, or possibly even August, when a 50hz hum starts to become visible.
  • First visible in the Sep 7 stream and the Oct 12 watchalong.
  • Other streams with 50hz hum: Dec 23, Feb 9, Apr 23.
  • Streamed at an unusual time 2:32AM EST on Sep 27 2021: https://youtu.be/bLh4qogv8ag
  • In the Oct 20 Dead by Daylight stream, all of her games matched her with players from Europe. In the Jun 25 DBD stream she was matched with American players.
  • She started hiding her ping in games and PC specs.
  • The Jun 15 Strawpoll incident exposed her for posting from an IP outside of the US. People believed she may have used a VPN or asked others to make the poll for her.

Jun 2022 to Aug 2022: US

  • On Jun 20 she streamed from Amelia's setup in the US and spent the following 10 days doing offcollab streams with other members of Myth.
  • The Jul 27 Rust stream shows a 60hz hum.

Aug 2022 to Jan 2023: not US

Jan 2023 to Mar 2023: Japan

  • She was in Japan from Jan 25 to sometime in March where she recorded her 3D showcase.

Mar 2023 to Sep 2023: US

  • Her first stream back from Japan is Mar 25 which looks different from the last setup before the Japan trip.
  • She does some watchalongs where a 60hz hum is visible: Apr 22, May 4

Sep 2023 to Feb 2024: not US

  • At this point information becomes less precise as her streams get less frequent, and harder to analyze, with no watchalongs.
  • The 50hz hum is visible again in the Nov 23 and Feb 9 streams.
  • Interestingly the Feb 14 Valentine's special ASMR looks like it was pre-recorded on a different setup.

Mar 2024 to Apr 2024: Japan

  • She went to Japan to record for her 3D birthday live. She left Japan mid-April.

Apr 2024 - May 2025: not US

  • Again, she did not stream much at this time, limiting the number of streams available to analyze.
  • In her streams back from Japan we see 50hz mains hum in the Apr 19 and Apr 23 streams, the latter showing the suspected HVAC unit spikes.
  • After May, 50hz, 85hz, and 130hz hums are consistently showing up in her streams.
  • A lone 50hz signal is not enough to decisively say the source is the power grid, but these can be used as a signature to tell when she's streaming from the same setup.
  • The Jul 14 stream continues to have the 50/90/130hz signals, as well as 50/100/150/200hz spikes of the HVAC unit activating (see Dec 23), possibly being turned on as the months get warmer.
  • After the Dec 7 stream, but possibly earlier as the lack of streams makes it hard to tell, the 50/90/130hz signals are seemingly gone.
  • Clear 50hz hum in the Dec 7, Jan 12, Jan 19, Apr 5, Apr 16, Apr 20 streams.
  • Gawr Gura graduates May 1, 2025.

After June 2025: not US

  • Sameko Saba debuts June 28, 2025.
  • No watchalongs.
  • Haven't gone digging too deep, but there are signs of a 50hz hum in the Jul 3 streams.
  • The Aug 3 stream shows what is likely the HVAC unit (see Dec 23) turning on: it's weaker at 150hz and lasts 13 minutes.
  • In the Oct 30 stream the 50/90/130hz signals can be seen again, suggesting she's in the same setup as last year's.

Conclusion

  • The audio analysis of numerous recordings indicates her movements outside the US based on the presence or lack of 50hz/60hz hums.
  • Analysis of recordings from other Vtubers confirmed 100% accuracy in distinguishing recordings made within the US from those outside.
  • Complementary evidence from ping, matchmaking, and her known presence at certain events, such as Japan for 3D recordings, or US for off collabs, etc, further supports the timeline interpretation.
  • During "not US" phases, no instances of unusually low ping or physical presence in specific places that would contradict the idea of her living outside the US were found.
  • During "not US" phases, she showed increased paranoia in showing ping and her PC specs, compared to when she's on a US setup.
