Black Sails Coffee Lounge, a locally owned coffee shop that opened in July in the Marketplace at Birdcage, will close its doors on Dec. 21, according to an announcement shared on social media.
โThank you for your tremendous love and support over these last few months. We have been honored, and have loved, being a place for you all to hang out and enjoy good music, good vibes, and good coffee,โ the announcement read.
Head barista and manager Hayden Stansbury said the Marketplace at Birdcage is planning to house another business in the suite currently occupied by Black Sails Coffee. While the ownership was offered alternative locations within the center, Stansbury said the proposed spaces were significantly smaller and wouldnโt meet the needs of the coffee company or its customers.
A site map for the Marketplace at Birdcage on Gerrity Group, the property management companyโs website, lists Rose Nail Lounge as โComing Soonโ in the location where Black Sails currently resides.
Kathilynn Carpenter, executive director for the Sunrise MarketPlace business improvement district, confirmed that the coffee shop was a temporary tenant, and said after a permanent tenant was found, the alternative spaces were not adequate for the coffee shop to be able to offer seating.
โWe are looking for another spot for him in the District,โ Carpenter said, adding that the coffee lounge owners have had โsome interest from other areas that would like [them] to locate there.โ
โI love this place,โ Stansbury said during a visit Thursday, noting that part of Black Sailsโ charm comes from its spacious interior and its unique placement along the walkway that connects two shopping centers.
The Sentinel reached out to one of the owners for comment on Thursday, but did not hear back before press time Sunday.
Despite the impending closure, the business isnโt planning to disappear. The owners are reportedly exploring new locations in Fair Oaks or elsewhere in Sacramento County.
Black Sails Coffee Lounge is located at 5925 Birdcage Centre Lane, Suite 102, in Citrus Heights.
