Conlang Communities

We celebrate the diversity of all constructed languages! Below are links to the biggest communities we know. Too many exist to list them all. Groups are ordered by visible membership, but numbers alone don’t fully capture a conlang’s merit or activity. They’re just a snapshot to meet speakers. Got better data?

The Big Three (Esperanto, Toki Pona, and Interslavic) each attract tens of thousands, from casual enjoyers to fluent devotees.

Explore five ways to connect. We list one main hub per language and add a second or third one on request.

  1. Reddit
  2. Discord
  3. Facebook
  4. Telegram
  5. In-person gatherings

We also highlight and celebrate two international auxiliary languages with an African focus. Prof. Alex G. Ìgbìnéwéká is the language evolutionist who created Guosa.

Reddit Communities

Esperanto and Toki Pona may soon see equality here.

Reddit communities are the largest overall and can be very creative! They show general public interest and support for conlangs more than how many have mastered the languages. They also bias toward online people of a certain age and in certain regions.

Sometimes we see beginners figuring things out together, unaware that fluent speakers gather elsewhere, e.g. Telegram for Esperanto and Discord for Toki Pona. Newcomers sometimes propose ideas to “fix” conlangs according to gaps in their own skill or knowledge.

Discord Servers

Discord is most popular with the generation aged 24 and under. It’s uniquely suitable for thriving language communities because of features like live voice chat and real-time events. Discord has been a major factor in Toki Pona’s rapid growth in the last five years. We are in a whole new era of social media, where the older methods no longer help the success of constructed languages.

Facebook Groups

Facebook has been a public meeting place since 2006 and caters to a certain age group. We honour the legacy of conlangs that have been passed down for generations and admire the milestones they have achieved!

Young people prefer Discord (affecting Toki Pona, Na’vi, Viossa) and Telegram (affecting Esperanto).

In-Person Gatherings

Which event had the largest in-person attendance recently, i.e. between Jan 1, 2017 and Dec 31, 2024?

By this metric, Esperanto is a clear leader. The majority of Toki Pona speakers are teenagers who can’t afford air travel and hotels. It will be interesting to look again around 2051 (when the cohort that gravitated toward Toki Pona are at the peak of their careers) and again in 2071 (when they’re in their prime retirement travel days).

Effective attendees: Some conlang communities want to spend 100% of their time speaking in the language. Others consist mostly of fans who want to discuss and learn it while primarily speaking in a language like English or German. To approximate this, the table uses a multiplier of 1.0 for advanced, 0.6 for intermediate, and 0.2 for beginners.

African Focus 💪🏿

Among the indigenous lingua francas that were designed with African features and values, many more people speak and participate in the Guosa communities than those of Afrihili. Institutions interested in the African perspective on successful auxiliary languages should start with the Guosa book below.

The Complete Dictionary of Guosa Language

by Ìgbìnéwéká Alex G.
available as Kindle ebook and paperback
Great Writers Media, LLC
672 pages

To collaborate in an international language in another continent, excellent projects and solutions already exist and are growing. There’s no valid reason to export European-based conlangs. For example, the Guosa language evolutionist is actively working to decolonize and undo the serious harms of cultural imperialism. Idealistic Westerners who truly love conlangs for egalitarian communication between nations should learn Guosa for friendships and travels in West Africa and among the West African diaspora.
