Name and shame: Apple

Sorry, this post was deleted by the person who originally posted it.

Thank you for your feedback. Apple sucks for software developers in my experience being there as an intern last summer . They micro manage everything

556

They literally micromanage their user base. What you are expecting from them?

Yea my dad works hardware side there, and he said compared to places like meta where u get a lot of freedom to make an impact urself, Apple micromanages the shit out of everything

25

And the amount of secrecy

lol no carry on bag is outrageous. Meta paid for 3 of my carry on bags no questions asked, and also paid for a 90$ uber from sfo to fremont. Didn't know it was this bad at apple. Even our frugal kings amazon offer housing stipend (edited because the number I had was off).

114

Amazon offers 2.6k for housing per month btw

36

Edited. I think I got confused between 2.6 and 3.6. However 2.6k in seattle/u-district goes further than 2k in the bay area.

Msft won't pay for them this season (unless I misread their offer) but at least there's a $300 stipend for that, which makes up for it

Lol had the same experience. From at outsider, it felt like a really good company that I coveted but a casual look in blind dispelled that. Low tc, terrible opps for swes, insanely unstructured interview that varies by team. Not sure why they have that much clout tbh. The average team at msft or amz is arguably better than apple’s(except obv the really interesting teams like vision pro etc)

Op is just sharing his opinion and experience. Probably helps other interns who have offers from Apple and other places and weigh the pros and cons. If it’s your only offer then it doesnt matter anyways.

Yes, but for most devs, Apple on your CV is a big step up. Other companies may not know or care about the work culture and TC situation.

I think the experience differs between internships and paid roles.

Interns aren't offering the company any value. They just desperately want a role after the degree is over. Companies recognise this.

You paid for the drive out from the further airport, and the other expenses. If you didn't desperately want the internship, you would have said "no", like any SWE who values their time would have done.

wait the intern housing is gone? that’s crazy. until last year it was $1k per month or take intern housing (which was actually pretty good and had biweekly apartment maintenance). 2k is pretty low.

84

It’s actually a generous $3300/mo housing stipend but due to California’s income tax it’s $2k the first month (but you will recoup a lot of the losses from tax returns anyway).

Hey at least they pay something for your housing and relocation. I got an offer from another bay area start up (c3.ai), and they did not subsidize anything outside of my wage which was around 46$ an hour. Needless to say I did not go with them lmao

Want to use the ON CAMPUS gym? That'll be a monthly subscription.

Ok yeah this is a massive L move on apples part. The free gym at my last internship has massively increased my productivity. Seriously if your employees sit in front of screens all day you should want to encourage them to be active as possible so they don't develop health issues and miss work.

56

The nickel and diming is unwise imho but it’s literally $10 a month

Apple could break the legs of every hundredth intern, and lots of CS majors would still want to work there.

I’ve been waiting for this

I work at Apple and interned last summer.

I think the location and the org you’re in matters a lot for company culture. When I interned at Apple Park, things did feel really busy and higher stress but things were generally pretty organized. Now that I work full time in sd the culture is fantastic, so sorry to hear you had a bad experience but for interns/people considering full time roles I’d say it really is org and team dependent

The housing situation part is lame tho

I actually really like my team so far, both my managers were super nice. It’s just most of the logistics / housing aspect that I was writing about

12

Yeah I get ya. I interned 2 summers ago now and had a luxury apartment to myself hearing they don’t provide housing anymore definitely sucks

Relo gets better when you become full time too

Ex Apple employee. All what OP says is accurate….but they never advertise perks

10

Finding summer housing in Cupertino sounds insane, I literally don't even know where you could stay. But I suppose that's a problem with any company in the suburbs.

And 2k a month is barely 2/3rds of rent money here lmao. Though it really depends on how many other companies will actually cover rent for you.

Agree with everything you say. But for relocation, you can just say you are driving there and book yourself the flight. You will get reimbursed for the amount of the flight when you start your internship through the third-party stipend company.

Never read an actual review of Apple but I gotta say, this sounded like something Apple would be like considering the phone they sell every year without any significant changes.

4

I work for Apple, i dont know much about intern life but I’ll have an intern this summer working with me. So I’ll ask a lot of questions about it and if theres any feedback I can help get to the right ears I’ll do my best.

Sorry for you had a not so great experience. I know of pretty bad internship programs. When I was in college I interned at a defense company and it was a really good experience but I knew of others in similar companies that really were in pretty shittie situations like no money for housing and really bad summer projects (a kid I knew spent all summer converting java code to c#, and at the end of the summer the manager had forgotten that was his project and told him “ah we dont actually need that”).

Good luck in your career!

Good luck with the remainder of your career.

Lmao “they only pay $2k for my rent”. Buddy try joining us back in the real world

41

The real world where rents in the bay area cost more than that? The real world where every other faang and most other companies in that pay range including Apple itself not too long ago used to do it? Why are OPs expectations unreasonable

Did they really cut corporate housing for interns? That’s crazy

Thank you for naming and shaming them.

That has to be most bizarre and entitled post I’ve seen on here haha - oh no, the relocation support isn’t up to scratch! lol
