Dimon on Trump Media debanking: ‘People have to grow up here’
JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon pushed back on allegations that Trump Media Group was “debanked” by Chase, saying his company abides by government subpoenas but does not target individuals or entities because of their political leanings.
In an interview on Fox News’s “Sunday Morning Futures,” host Maria Bartiromo asked the chief executive about claims from former Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), the CEO of Trump Media, who said the government subpoenaed “our bank records at Trump Media” during a probe into President Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
“I have seen Jamie Dimon and others at JPMorgan say this over and over again that they don’t debank people for political reasons. Well, then why the hell did you debank Trump Media?” Nunes said in a clip played on the Sunday show.
“People have to grow up here, OK, and stop making up things and stuff like that,” Dimon said, when asked to respond to Nunes’s remarks and whether his bank sent over records to former special counsel Jack Smith, as Nunes claimed.
“I can’t talk about an individual account. We do not … debank people for religious or political affiliations,” he continued.
Dimon said sometimes Chase does debank people who “have religious and political affiliation,” even if that’s not the reason those people are debanked.
“We debank people who are Democrats. We debank people who are Republicans. We have debanked different religious folks. Never was that for that reason,” Dimon said.
Dimon also stressed that his company only hands information over to the government when they are legally obligated to do so by subpoena. He noted administrations of both parties have long required banks to hand over information, in certain situations, that he wishes they didn’t.
“We don’t give information to the government just because they ask. We’re subpoenaed. We are required by court to give it to the government. And I have been following subpoenas with this administration, the last administration, the administration before that and the one before that. And I don’t agree with a lot of it,” Dimon said.
“So, let’s just take a deep breath and fix the problems, as opposed to, like, blame someone who’s put in that position,” he added.
“Democratic and Republican governments have come after us both,” he later added. “Let’s not act like this is just one side doing this. This has been going for a long time. And we should stop militarizing the government that kind of way.”
Dimon noted that he doesn’t like debanking people and praised the Trump administration for making an effort to tackle the issue.
“I want to change these rules. I actually applaud the Trump administration, who’s trying to say that debanking is bad and we should change the rules. Well, damn it, I have been asking to change the rules now for 15 years. So change the rules.”
