Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 2 Episode 7 Offers the Best Mary v Audrey Feud Yet

Critic's Rating: 4.8 / 5.0

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage is always better when Mary is part of it.

It’s not just that it’s a connection to the entire Cooper family, though that’s part of it.

But when Mary visits, the conflicts are real and relatable, and Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage Season 2 Episode 7 demonstrated how badly the show needs that.

Mary and Audrey’s Conflict Is Always Deeper Than It Seems

From the beginning, these two women have hated each other because they see one another as a threat.

Audrey is afraid that Georgie ruined Mandy’s life by getting her pregnant, and she doesn’t like his less-educated-than-her family any more than she likes him, while Mary is always afraid of being replaced and of losing Georgie to the McAllisters.

Mary’s plight is more poignant now that she’s lost George Sr, too, because her husband died, Sheldon moved away, and Missy is an out-of-control teenager, so Georgie is all she has left.

And of course, on Georgie & Mandy Season 2, Mary also has a lot to lose because she used her house as collateral for the loan for the tire shop, so if Georgie’s business fails, she literally will lose everything.

All of which led to an explosive, yet funny, conflict for Mary and Audrey.

Georgie Was Stuck In The Middle For Most Of The Episode

Much of the humor came from Georgie wanting to please everyone.

He insisted that Reuben pretend to be a devout Christian who never cursed or took the Lord’s name in vain to please Mary, and probably asked her to do the books in the first place so she would feel useful.

But he didn’t want to lose what little hard-won progress he’d made with Audrey either.

Plus, he was looking for someone to give him permission to do what he wanted to do anyway, not someone to tell him how to save money and keep the store open, so he needed Audrey when Mary didn’t give him what he wanted.

It was a funny situation because it was so relatable.

Many people have dealt with an overcontrolling parent or one who refuses to acknowledge that their child is now an adult, and the games people sometimes play to keep the peace while doing what they wanted to do in the first place are rich sitcom material.

This was much funnier — and easier to watch — than the silly situations Georgie has gotten himself into recently.

The Final Scene of Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 2 Episode 7 Proves That Audrey and Mary Should Have Been Friends

They came so close to an understanding after Audrey realized that this conflict was really about missing George Sr.

Audrey can be empathetic when she wants to be, and she and Mary have more in common than she wants to admit, including that their kids always tried to play them against their husbands to get what they wanted.

I’m not convinced that Georgie purposely played his mother and mother-in-law against each other, but I can understand why it felt that way.

Audrey and Mary were at cross purposes the whole episode, but that wasn’t all Georgie’s fault — it’s just how they are.

Their truce lasted only a few seconds because neither had any tolerance for the other, and their attempt to confront Georgie was especially hilarious because of it.

Jim’s Story Was Also Especially Strong

Usually, the B storylines are take-it-or-leave-it for me, but I enjoyed Jim’s.

Stories about older men not being able to renew their licenses seem to be in vogue right now — Shifting Gears had a similar story this week, too.

There’s a reason for that. The dilemma of wanting to keep driving while facing age-related difficulties is one many people face as they enter their 70s, 80s, or beyond.

It’s impressive that Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 2 Episode 7 was able to make this situation funny, considering how serious it was.

In Jim’s case, he couldn’t see well, something that was likely fixed with a trip to the eye doctor (and was, at the end of the episode), but again, there was a deeper meaning to it.

Jim simply didn’t want to face that yet another thing was going wrong physically. Needing to get his eyes checked was only the latest problem with his health, and it made him feel like an old man.

Of course, not being able to drive at all wasn’t any better, so he was forced to do something about this after the accident.

He was lucky the cop let him go if Mandy drove. Driving without a current license is a serious violation of the law.

Ironically, Georgie and Mandy Didn’t Interact Much

What does it say about this show that one of the best episodes siphoned both main characters into other stories?

Georgie and Mandy barely interacted — they didn’t fight, nor did they empathize with each other.

This episode was unusual in that respect, but it worked.

There really wasn’t much room to spare, and conversations between the two of them would have slowed the pace too much.

Still, I hope this doesn’t become a habit, because if the show stops being about Georgie and Mandy’s relationship, it’ll be a different show than the one we started with.

Connor’s Heartbreak on Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 2 Episode 6 Was Hilarious Until Alcohol Got Involved

Critic's Rating: 4 / 5.0

Connor’s heartbreak was the first Connor-centered episode on Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 2 Episode 6.

It wasn’t the best Connor-themed episode ever, but it was good — at least for the first half.

The alcohol-induced nonsense in the second part of Georgie & Mandy Season 2 Episode 6 wasn’t all that funny. There had to have been a better direction to go in.

Connor Had No Idea How To Handle His Grief

I could relate to his confusion about what he was supposed to do now.

I’ve been there, as I imagine most people have.

I didn’t hide in my room or mope around, and I certainly didn’t drink over it, but I’ve had that feeling of the rug being pulled out from under me with a surprise breakup before, and it never feels good.

It was even harder for Connor. Not only was Chloe his first girlfriend, but she rejected the way he was living his life, and he wasn’t sure what to do about it.

Connor’s family didn’t know how to help him either, and everyone but Georgie more or less had given up.

That in itself was a compelling story, but I was disappointed that Georgie didn’t have any influence beyond one or two scenes where he tried and failed to help Connor.

During Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1, Georgie and Connor developed a special relationship.

Georgie was the only one who knew how to communicate with Connor. That was because he had years of dealing with a brother who was different, and now he was willing to make the connection with Connor he never had with Sheldon.

(CBS/Troy Harvey)

It didn’t feel like that on Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 2 Episode 6, though.

Yes, Georgie talked with Connor, but it didn’t seem any different than what anyone else had done, and there certainly was no special connection there.

Or, at least, I didn’t see one. I guess Connor felt differently, considering he woke Georgie up in the middle of the night.

The way he suddenly popped up in Georgie and Mandy’s bedroom was hilarious, and I loved Mandy’s deadpan complaints about how she was never going to hear the end of this and get to go back to sleep.

The Best Scene was Mandy’s Attempt to Help Connor With His Resumé

Connor decided he needed to find a new direction in life, but he had less than zero interest in every suggestion Mandy made for his resumé — in fact, he had an explanation for why every idea she had wouldn’t work.

Mandy gave up and decided to get Connor a beer instead, which was not great for the rest of the episode, but I understood why she did it.

It’s frustrating working with someone who won’t do anything except explain why nothing will work.

I get why Connor feels that way. I’ve been there too: frustrated, depressed, and feeling like nothing is working out the way I want to.

But he was driving me up the wall with his negativity during that scene, especially when he felt that his musical talent didn’t get him anywhere.

As a fellow artist, I hate when people feel their art isn’t doing them any good, whether that’s music, visual art, or writing.

Luckily, for Connor, this malaise was short-lived, and he was back to making music that his family didn’t understand by the end of the hour.

We even got a blast from the past with the Dr. Demento references.

I vaguely remember the name when I was a kid. I thought he was on MTV, but I think I imagined that because everything I can find about him online says he was a radio host.

Anyway, he was the first person to platform Weird Al, so Connor totally had a chance with his bizarre mixtape — and indeed, Dr. Demento loved it at the end of the episode.

I wonder if this will play out in future episodes or if it will never be mentioned again, just like the Jay Leno gag in Season 1.

Let’s Talk About Those Alcohol-Fueled Jokes…

The middle section, where everyone gets drunk while playing beer pong, didn’t make much sense.

I don’t mean that the story was hard to follow — just that it was unnecessary.

It didn’t solve anything for everyone to get drunk, and the joke about Georgie being the only responsible one in the room fell flat quickly.

The whole sequence felt very one-note, with Audrey making a joke a thousand times that I can’t even remember now.

I’d have rather Connor had some actual character growth.
