Aaron Kleensang

Aaron Kleensang, chief deputy for the Stanton County Sheriff’s Office, announced on Tuesday that he is seeking to become the next sheriff.

Kleensang, who has 20 years of law enforcement experience, will run as a Republican candidate in the 2026 primary election. He is the first person to publicly announce his candidacy after current sheriff Mike Unger announced on Monday that he would not seek a ninth term as sheriff.

In a statement, Kleensang, 40, said he is committed to justice, transparency and community safety, adding that he is ready to bring fresh leadership to the Stanton County Sheriff’s Office.

"As sheriff, my priority will be to ensure that every resident of Stanton County feels safe, heard and respected," Kleensang said. "I believe in fostering trust between law enforcement and the community. I would also like to address the changing climate in the courts and probation systems.”

The chief deputy said he wants to “ensure that our department is proactive and operates with integrity and fairness."

Kleensang said he has a proven track record of leadership. He has served as a corrections officer, police officer, SWAT team member, firefighter and EMT. He also has served on the Woodland Park board for five years and is its current president.

Kleensang has worked the night shift for the past decade in an effort to reduce crime by proactively working to deter criminal behavior and to earn the respect of colleagues and community members alike. He has earned the Mothers Against Drunk Driving award twice.

He added that his campaign would focus on additional training for deputies, improving public safety with proactive law enforcement and building stronger community partnerships. He invites residents to join “the movement for positive change” by attending campaign events, sharing their concerns and supporting the vision for a safer, stronger Stanton County.

“It would be an honor to serve as sheriff of Stanton County, and I have tremendous respect for sheriff Unger and his decades of diligent service to the residents of Stanton County,” Kleensang said.

Kleensang is supported by his wife, Megan, and two daughters, Penny and Phoebe.
