Controversies[]

Marineland has faced harsh criticism over the years for their treatment of their animals. In 1977, the US Department of Fisheries siezed 6 bottlenose dolphins that had been illegally caught in the Gulf of Mexico. In 2011, SeaWorld sued them for custody of Ikaika, a killer whale that they had given to Marineland on breeding loan. For many years, Marineland did not have a proper scale to weight animals with, and environmental enrichment devices were prohibited for being "ugly". Trainers were banned from attending animal training and welfare conferences. Many animals have died in suspicious ways, such as starvation. Marineland is extremely secretive and animal deaths are often hidden. Deceased animals were buried in mass graves located on the property, and these mass graves reportedly contained over 1000 animals. Bones can supposedly still be found on the Marineland property to this day. Many of Marineland's exhibits are overcrowded.
