Empty stomach means only water. It is to promote absorbtion of the medicine rather tan the nutrients in the food or drink. Nothing but water for at least 2 hours before and 1 hour after.

So as soon as there's something other than water it is no longer empty? Even when it's just tea for example?

You need to eat something like a few crackers or something. This is most likely to prevent nausea.

Tea is basically water. Soup would be the better option in that case.

As an example, you shouldnt take NSAIDS (Aspirin, Ibuprofen, etc) on an empty stomach over any extended period of time because they can do damage to your stomach lining and cause other irritations.

Eat a snack or something if you need. Most will just take with their regular meals.
