Metallic taste in mouth

Anyone experience a metallic taste? It reminds me of the taste at the end of a bad cold, but I don't feel sick, just my normal spring allergy symptoms.

Could this be from my Zyrtec/ Cetirizine? Or, more of a sinus issue?
Let me know your thoughts & experiences & any tips to get rid of this taste!!

Thanks :-)

  • Not trying to make you panic but if this is more recent I would get a COVID test just to be safe. This metallic taste is the exact way my coworker described his "loss of taste" when he was infected.

I had this thought yesterday as well... but I am fully vaccinated so didn't think too far into the possibility of COVID...! That is a good idea, doesn't hurt to get tested. Thanks for sharing!!

Good luck. As far as I understand the vaccine wont stop you from getting it, its more designed to stop you from having a serious complication from it such as hospitalization or death. This is still worthwhile so I chose to get it even knowing that it wont stop it completely.

I had this a while ago too and would love to know the cause. I figured maybe a minor sinus infection or something because it definitely couldn’t be Covid (live in a country that doesn’t have it)

Update - I used Flonase and it went away! I think my sinuses were very swollen and irritated from my seasonal allergies. Did some research too and irritated sinuses from allergies are a common cause of metallic taste / smell

Are you still using flonase? Any major side effects?

Yes, I get a metallic taste in my mouth in March when junipers begin to bloom. I don't have it now, even though something out there is bothering me.

  • Is the back of your tongue white? Could be thrush, a fungal infection.

I had this last fall and even had an MRI. Do you get migraines? It could be a rare symptom

I’m about a month into having this metallic taste significant portions of the time everyday. Bitter foods taste terrible as does water. What made your doctors get an MRI?

It was new and sudden combined with my history of migraines. I also get care at the VA though, and I think it was “easier” to get the MRI there than if I was at the local hospital.

The taste went away eventually and my doctor’s best guess is that it was a random side effect of the migraines. Best of luck!
