Creativity is dead; long live creativity
Reflections on how my view of creativity and design has shifted remind me that creativity grows through slow, deliberate practice; through experimenting, failing, and refining, rather than instant results.
The following remarks are my views and my views only. They reflect how my perception of the creative industry, the craft, and art in general has shifted over the past few months.
Yet another reference to the Bauhaus
Walter Gropius, one of the founders of the Bauhaus school, published the Bauhaus Manifesto in 1919. Back in my uni days, while studying design history, this text inspired me to become a designer. It shaped how I see the world of design, and how the craft and my passion for art have influenced my actions in it.
In it, he states that every creative discipline must return to the craft because “art” alone can’t exist as a profession. He argues that there’s no difference between an artist and a craftsperson, and that “proficiency in a craft is essential to every artist. Therein lies the prime source of creative imagination.”
