There was a time when I would argue about socks on the floor or an unanswered text. I recognize I was being unreasonable, but that doesn’t change the fact that I was still invested.

When I finally stopped bringing things up, it wasn’t due to my maturity or inner sense of zen. I was pulling away.

In my last relationships, I didn’t pack things up or slam doors. I just stopped.

I stopped sharing the little things in my day. Stopped saying “good morning” in my sweet little voice. Stopped correcting her in front of friends when she was telling the totally wrong version of the story.

I wasn’t plotting a dramatic farewell. I was mourning the life I hoped for while still living in it.
