Making a kaleidoscope party video Making a kaleidoscope party video

I need to create a kaleidoscopic video display for a party. Rather like the background monitors in old MTV shows. It's going to be playing for hours during a birthday party.

Is there a way to relatively easily create this using OpenShot? Possibly an add on?

I have seen some free downloadable videos on the web but they are normally very short, 20 seconds or so. https://pixabay.com/videos/search/kaleidoscope/

I could download them all and edit them together then loop I guess.

Before I go that route, perhaps there is another app to generate hours of this sorta stuff?

Many thanks for any help.

Comment faire ?

Je vous remercie.

When I try create a title for the video before it starts, I create the title svg and then try to drag it down but it does not look the same way. It just becomes a fine line and not an image block for me to drag around or control it's duration on screen. It is different from the video tutorials on YT that I see.

'[Errno 1] Operation Not Permitted' error message '[Errno 1] Operation Not Permitted' error message

Hello,

I did an edit using OpenShot the other day an it appeared to save ok as I opened the project a couple of times. However, if I try to open it now I'm getting the following error message: [Errno 1] Operation Not Permitted (followed by the location and filename).

Most of the posts I've seen regarding problems opening OSP files seem to involve issues with files being moved etc but that isn't the case here and the project simply won't open. When I did a search using the error message it appears to be a more general permission issue.
I've been trying to think of something that might've caused this change but am drawing a blank - any help here would be greatly appreciated?

Thanks in advance

Q: How handle unstable video for stabilisation Q: How handle unstable video for stabilisation

The videos I'm processing is taken while biking so very unstable. On top of this I speed up the footage 4-16x. The stabilisation in OpenShot has mostly no trouble with this but ofcourse there are large black borders jumping around. I have been trying to figure out some way of not having to zoom the video to hide them since that would mean loosing 50% of the video in some cases :-)

So I was thinking if this black area would be transparent I could just put the original video in the background with loads of blur to make it less flickery. Or if I could choose color to use like a greenscreen keying to replace with the blurry original video. I have tried pure black for keying but this picks up too much of dark elements in the videos.

Is there any way of doing this in OpenShot?

Resync Audio with Video? Resync Audio with Video?
OpenShot Tutorial

I'm doing a project that has me recording stuff with OBS Studio, problem is there's this one video I'm recording whose audio is out of sync with the video. A character's lips will start moving a whole second before the voice kicks in, sound effects play a half second after the sequence, that sort of thing. I'm already editing these recordings in OpenShot as part of my project, in this specific case I need to take it a step further. Is there a way to rearrange the audio of a recording to resync it wuth the video in OpenShot? I'm sure there's a tutorial video out there, but how would I even search that, there's no succinct way to put that in a search bar, asking on Reddit seems more sensible in this case.

extending clip keeping keyframes relative position extending clip keeping keyframes relative position
Enhancement Request

Hello everyone,

I need your help, please!

I have an OpenShot clip that consists of a simple "still" image to which I added a fade-in and a fade-out effects, so that, of course, I have some key-frames near the beginning and some near the ending of the clip.

Ok, now I would like to extend the clip "in the middle", keeping the starting and the ending key-frames in their "relative" position (the former ones to the begin the latter ones to the end), how can this be done?

By now, I know I could do two things:

* drag the border of the clip (left or right) to extend its duration BUT that, of course, won't let me drag the (starting or ending) key-frames that would be "statically" left on their position ignoring my action;

* slice the clip in two on the middle, then move the new right clip part and finally "fill" the gap by inserting again the "still" image making its duration the same of the gap I need to fill... This could work, I know, BUT I'll end up having 3 clip instead of just one to get what I need (...and I really think there would be no way to merge them into one at that point) so if I then want to apply some other effect (like an alpha mask, for instance) I would have to apply it three times... So... I thought that can't be really the convenient way to do it, is it?

So, in summary, my question is:

is there and what is the most convenient way to extend or reduce an OpenShot clip duration "in the middle", preserving the "relative" positioning of key-frames I have put at the start and at the end of that clip?

Thank you very much for your support!

Openshot settings for Intel i7-10875H/64GB/T2000 Openshot settings for Intel i7-10875H/64GB/T2000
Enhancement Request

I have a laptop with Windows 11 and the following HW

  • Intel i7-10875H

  • 64 GB Ram

  • nvidia Quadro T2000

  • SSD

On this laptop I use Openshot to process vacation videos, The project includes many short mp4 videos taken with smartphones, which I cut, move, add music, etc.

The question is: how to configure OpenShot for the best performance on this machine? Can it utilize this GPU? Can I give it more memory? And how?

Thank you in advance!

Stabilize effect does not export sometimes Stabilize effect does not export sometimes

Edit: Seems saving project causes the export of stabilizer not to work again until I create new project.

I have some long clips made with a cheap action cam. I put them into OpenShot and cut them down to 35 sec for fast testing. I pull the Stabilize effect on it and leave window setting at 30,0. The processing finishes and I can see the frame jumping around a lot in the preview window after stabilizing.

I export as: (cpu) MP4 (h.264)
- HD 720p 60 fps (1280x720) (same as video source)
- Quality: High

The output is identical to the source, no bobbing around with black frames (I have not applied zoom on stabilizer for easy testing) and no stabilized output.

When I reload the project in OpenShot the preview does no longer show the stabilized video, only shaky original video. The effect is still applied to the clip but not visible.

Other effects like pixelate seem to work fine. Stabilize also sometimes works if I only do that and directly export like above. If I touch zoom or anything else on Stabilize it won't work until I shut down the program and create a new project.

I'm using Windows 10, OpenShot versions: 3.1.1, 3.3.0, 3.4.0-release-candidate-14793-a7dfc596-0b018e34-x86_64

I installed over the old, I reinstalled over the new with the old, I uninstalled and reinstalled again. I installed latest daily build. I have used ffmpeg from commandline and updated that too but I installed OpenShot after that.

Am I doing something wrong?

Way to indicate used/unused project files? Way to indicate used/unused project files?
Enhancement Request

Hi, I'm just doing simple video editing and started to transition from using Mac/iMove to PC/OpenShot.

One feature I thought was helpful in iMovie, is that once I loaded all of my videos into the project, in the video thumbnail view, it would have an indicator if I actually pulled that video into the project timeline and used it in some sort of way.

Is there a similar feature or way to do this in OpenShot?

Using transcript to find words in a video Using transcript to find words in a video
Enhancement Request

Hello,

I want to censor curse words in a video. I already have the transcript.

I've read guides that say other editing software lets you find the time in the video for any word in the transcript you want to censor. You can use that feature to jump to all the places where the words to censor are, and drop a BEEP on that part of the audio track.

Does Openshot have that feature? To save time, I don't want to watch the entire movie and listen out for the words I want to sensor.

Thanks

Help with Keyframes? Help with Keyframes?
Solution Provided

Hello; this is my first time using Openshot (or any animation/video editing software)--I've researched on keyframes in general that they are key points where the animation subject 'changes', so when you have a point at the start, you slide the scrub bar to the end to pan down something and move the Location Y to be at the bottom.

The issue I'm having is; it pans down the one side fine, but around 0:00:7-8 in the video clip I post here, it suddenly 'jumps' to the right side of the image and pans out--could anyone explain what might be happening here?

My goal is for the camera to move over to the right top of the newspaper, and once at the top, zoom in slightly to read the lettering, then pan down to the right side block of the newspaper, and fade out after a moment.

Let me know if anyone needs the configs for the Scale X/Y or Location X/Y, or anything else! Ill happily provide. Just been working at this a bit and a bit frustrated. xD

Hello! I have moving into OpenShot from (gasp) Windows XP Movie Maker. I love that we have easily executable speed options, which are in the same speed options as Movie Maker had, except it stops at x16. I typically use x32 when editing my speedart (timelapse drawing) videos. I know that there is a (admittedly confusing) manually way to adjust the time through Properties in the FAQ, but it would be super handy just to have it added in as one of the default fast-forward increment options that just makes sense to me. Thank you for your time and consideration!

Dí a guardar.

Hello, my message goes to the attention of openshot developers and also anyone who can help.

I am asking for your help with a problem I am encountering in the context of integrating the OpenShot Video Editor 3.3.0 software into our professional environment.

After analysis, we found that certain options accessible via the “Help” menu do not comply with our internal security and confidentiality rules.

Here are the features we would like to disable: Report a bug (F3) Ask a question (F4) Join our Community (F5) Translate this app (F6) Make a donation (F7) About OpenShot (Ctrl+H)

We have identified the following configuration file: C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenShot Video Editor\settings_default.settings However, it doesn't seem to allow these options to be disabled.

Furthermore, we also want to deactivate automatic updates (“Version Loading” function).

Does anyone have a procedure or solution to suggest to us to block these elements?

Any documentation or technical assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Audio file cuts off mid video Audio file cuts off mid video
No Response from OP

Hey, I have a weird issue. The audio file over my video clip keeps getting randomly cut off during editing. I tried reseting the volume, and setting the entire file to 100% but nothing works. I tried making a new project but the same thing keeps happening. This happened after I found out the vertical video I was making wasn't profiled as vertical, so I changed it, and now this is happening with the audio. Does anyone know what's up?

New Issues with Exporting New Issues with Exporting
Bug Identified

Hello all!

I’ve been using OpenShot here and there for some time, and I’ve never had many issues aside from occasional crashing. However, I’m editing a video, and it’s all complete, but the exporting is just a nightmare and I’m unsure how to fix it.

The video is about half an hour long - it’s a 1-2 minute intro, then just a single 28 minute clip. When I export in FHD 60FPS 1080p (like I always have), the export time is insanely long. Like… I left it exporting for 13 hours, and it only went just above 50%. This seems like a bug? How can I improve this without sacrificing video quality?

Again, it never used to take THIS long. Could it be the number of tracks? Additionally, I turned on hardware acceleration, but that turned all of the clips bright green, so I need to disable that again haha.

Any help would be appreciated!

Sudden bugs after installing another video editor Sudden bugs after installing another video editor

UPDATE: I did a search in C: for "Descript" and the installer was still in the Downloads folder. Deleted it and OS is working again. But I'll leave this up for anyone who dares cheat on OpenShot with Descript.

UPDATE 2: Now it is deleting or shortening clips when I move them. Sigh. It's like it's possessed.

I was using OpenShot this morning without issues. Exported 7 or 8 videos. Then I installed the Descript app and suddenly OS won't export. It started with OS not uploading files. I deleted OS and its folders, deleted Descript, reinstalled OS using the Daily Build, and then could upload files again. But now I am getting different error messages or OS just shuts down every time I try to export. I deleted it again and installed the Daily Build a second time. Error messages have included "failed to allocate image buffer," "std::bad_alloc," "audio codec not found," "openshot could not open video codec." Seriously, it's a different error each time. If I don't get an error, it starts to export and then closes. One time it started to export and stayed open, but said it would take 2 hours. These are 5 minute videos. I tried redoing one of the videos I made this morning, and got the same issues. So it's not my files unless Descript did something to them, but I only uploaded one video to Descript and I deleted it about 15 minutes after installing it.

I have increased the OS cache limit to 10,000 MB and followed every other piece of advice I can find for each specific error message. Any suggestions?

I have a Puget Systems desktop running Windows 10 Pro with 31.8 GB of usable RAM. Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10700K CPU @ 3.80GHz 3.79 GHz. I'm not super computer savvy, but I can follow directions.

What's up with the video splitter in 3.30? What's up with the video splitter in 3.30?
Solution Provided

For some reason the Video Splitter tool doesn't work right in the new release, it'll be fine for the first clip but than it will completely be off for the new clip. And the only way to fix it is if you turn the tool off than turn it back off. It's even more strange because it isn't a problem with the older 3.1.1 Version. But it's an issue with the new release. This actually made me have to download the older version because it split better. Does anyone else have this problem?

No Response from OP

Is there a way to group multiple things together? Is there a way to group multiple things together?
Solution Provided

This could apply to other files (images) too, I guess. I'm trying to put multiple images/titels on top of something on a video clip and have it continuously move to cover the object using keyframes. I'm having trouble, though, because I can't figure out how to move multiple images at once easily. I could go through and adjust each frame using the properties panel, but that would be extremely tedious compared to grouping all of them somehow and then being able to drag them all around together. Is there a way to do this within the program?

Image sequences no longer working Image sequences no longer working
Enhancement Request

Hello, I use openshot for animation which means that the best quality short film can be created via importing images that previously, the software would condense into image sequences that flowed smoothly at 24fps. Now, when I open OpenShot I go to do this and get the pop up prompting me to click yes and import images as an image sequence (it only lists the name of the first file selected in the bunch, e.g "sc1_0012" even though there are 100 other frames in there) but when I select yes all the software does is load in all of the 100 images EXCEPT for the one it asked to turn into a sequence and does not deliver me any form of video sequence. It is causing me a lot of frustration as I have no way now to create animations and edit them for export without downgrading the quality of the work by exporting as a Mov from clip studio paint and then exporting it AGAIN in OpenShot after compiling the Mov files. I have the most recent version of the software too so it isn't that it needs an update.

Overlay is smaller than screen Overlay is smaller than screen

I have a lot of videos that have a purple border around the other edge of the frame and I need the border to be blue. I created an overlay with the blue border and it's the exact height and width of the videos, but when I place it on a track, it shrinks just slightly so I can see a smidgen of the purple border behind the new blue border. I know that I can manually adjust it in the preview pane using the corner of the overlay, but I don't want to do this for every single video because they may not end up the same size as the borders in other videos. Is there a way to make the overlay cover the entire frame when I place it on the track?

Can you export with lossless audio Can you export with lossless audio

Default is AAC 192 and when i tried entering "flac" it never works for some reason.

MKV does support flac but for some reason i never get any audio if i try exporting as MKV with flac audio.

I could try exporting the audio separately and then mergin it with FFMPEG but i would prefer not having to resort to that.

Edit: got it to work once by using the app image but i cannot use that for my most recent project since it will just crash if i try that.

edit2: it crashed because my save included the waveform. Had to save without it using my arch linux install of openshot (not the appimage).

Stuck in a "Missing File" loop, can't open program Stuck in a "Missing File" loop, can't open program
Enhancement Request

Apparently the last time I used OpenShot, I was working on an old project that I've since deleted. When I open OpenShot, it tries to open that file and pops up a "Missing file" error. It asks me to select the directory where that file is located. If I hit cancel or X on the directory screen, it takes me back to the error screen. If I hit any of the buttons on the error screen, it takes me back to the directory screen. I can't find any way to tell it to just forget about that project and let me start a new one. Help? Is there a settings file somewhere I can poke at, or am I going to need to reinstall?

Audio won't disable Audio won't disable
Solution Provided

Running v3.3.0 | 0.4.0, Windows

I've tried everything, but I'm new to OpenShot, so I could be doing it wrong. I select my clip (there's only one, plus a track with titles), snap the play head to the starting marker, and in properties, change Enable Audio from Auto to Off. Sound still plays in preview.

Tried setting clip volume to 0%. Sound still plays.

I've scrubbed through the clip and jumped to keyframes, Audio Enabled is Off at all points, so it's not getting turned on later in the clip.

Audio is present in both preview and rendered video.

Also, somehow setting Audio Enabled to Off is making my scaling reset. It still automates my x/y locations correctly, so it's not like I'm losing the keyframes. But it doesn't respect the scaling unless I also change Enable Video from Auto to On. If I re-enable Audio, then my scaling come back, whether Enable Video is Auto or On.

Also tried separating audio, but then I just get two tracks whose audio I can't turn off.

Is my project hopelessly corrupt, or are these properties a bit wonky, or am I doing it wrong?

Thanks!

I apologize for this rant: https://www.reddit.com/r/OpenShot/s/6yBAiogbBD

Openshot really is a good program, especially for being free to download. With no ads even!

I was complaining in that post about the counterintuitive nonsense I'd run in to trying to edit a video.

At the time of my...outburst...🤔...I was fussing with keyframes and trying to move the camera around in time with the music. So, I clipped that section, slowed it by half, edited in a few keyframes which were already a tedious process, and then, sped it back up the check my work so far. The keyframes stayed where they were while it was still slow and didn't move with the now extended clip.

THAT'S when I flipped out and posted that impotent hissy-fit.

Instead, I took just that clip, put it in its own project, slowed it down and THEN worked all the keyframes to where I wanted it. Exported the video, had the half speed version I wanted and imported that back into the main project.

I managed to finally get it done and I would like you all to check out my work:

https://youtu.be/c23FDjmW3IQ?si=vGDuSZDqQLeuzylI

That's actually the second part of the same video because I got whacked with a copyright strike for a song that was released in 1937. I would have to wait till 2033 to use it freely but I disputed it and now it seems to have gone through so problems upon problems just have to keep digging.

Clipping together from multiple angles Clipping together from multiple angles
Enhancement Request

Hey all! Please forgive me for being fairly new to this. I am learning as I go to put my ideas into action.

I am recording on multiple devices simultaneously utilizing OBS and source record filter so each camera records to a separate file that I can then remix as I'd like.
The idea is to basically make different cameras the featured visual at given times. Audio is a separate file that should match up to the end product as they're all recorded together.

I know of the few different ways to cut clips from larger files and place them on the timeline, but is there a way for those clips to go on the timeline where they belong based on the time of the file? For instance, if I want Camera1 0000 to 0033 and then Camera2 0033 to 0137 and Camera3 0137 to 0155 and so on- is there a way to do that? A snap or something? There should be no empty space, every moment will remain accounted for, just from a different angle. I'd love to avoid having to do it manually and risking the human error element that is sure to throw everything off with the audio.

Also open to hearing if there's a better/more efficient way to pull off my goal in general.

TIA!

and no, I don´t want a set Profile and work around them, I want every gif to be it´s own size because I plan to prganize tham around the screen, (like one could be vertical to the left, another horizontal at the top or bottom; different dimentions each)

Open shot taking forever to respond? Open shot taking forever to respond?

All of a sudden out of the blue, it's taking OpenShot 45-60 seconds to respond to almost each input I do, whether it's cutting a video clip, moving a video clip, etc. I don't understand. I've been using Openshot for about half a year now and all of a sudden today, the program is freezing when doing most inputs. I thought perhaps it was because the video I was making was over 15 minutes. So I decided to close the program, reboot, and create a new project, but it's exactly the same.

I'm currently using 3.2.1. I tried using 3.3.0 earlier this year but it has horrible bugs, making it a nightmare to use, so I reverted back to 3.2.1. Does anybody have any idea what's going on?

How to cut out a part of a video (can't be done) How to cut out a part of a video (can't be done)
No Response from OP

So I spent like a week with no progress on this. I have a two minute video of someone talking, standing on the left side of a stage. Dimensions are 1280 by 720. I want to cut out just the part where this person is talking. So the new video would have different dimensions. It would be vertically rectangular. Every effort to use the crop tool has ended in failure. The new video just has the same dimensions. Then black bars appear on the side that immediately move inward to the area I wanted to crop out. But that's not what I want. I want to "cut out" that rectangular area and export it as a new video with new dimensions. I read the entire OpenShot materials online, and tried every possible search term I could think of, but that appears to be impossible? AI also doesn't have a clue what I'm asking for.
