As curious readers, absorbed in the life of ideas — or, better, committed to life itself — we sometimes pick up books we already know we’ll disagree with.

I sometimes pick up books written by members of the movement that calls itself “gender critical,” aka “sex realist.”

This movement maintains that a male person can only ever be a man and a female person can only ever be a woman, and hence transness (as related to sex or gender) is meaningless. To the “gender criticals,” a body modification is just that. Gender nonconforming behavior is just that. And feelings aren’t facts. Your body mods, behaviors, and feelings may make you interesting but don’t make you any other sex or gender than the one you were born as — thus say the “gender criticals.” With varying levels of bluntness, they tell trans people that our identities are fake.

They want the law, as well as social convention, to derecognize the genders of people who have already transitioned in hopes that this will dissuade others from transitioning. They want fewer people to be trans.
