The Japanese online census site is great. Serious congratulations to the government for this one! It's super simple to read and follow, and it's a JS SPA for the main questionnaire so you can browse around and change answers with zero loading times and no lost answers.

Japanese websites, especially government ones, have a (pretty deserved) reputation for being terrible... but sometimes, they really do nail it ^^

I'm going to argue that basically every YUV conversion matrix used in gamma space is wrong! BT.709 says Y = 0.2126R + 0.7152G + 0.0722B, but those coefficients are designed for linear light. They relatively overemphasize green and underemphasize blue in gamma space.

I think 0.299R + 0.518G + 0.183B or so would work better. For 2.2 gamma (simplifying the EOTF for the example), those give the 0.2126... *relative* intensities for pure R,G,B after linear conversion.

Saturated colors are always going to be too dark if you do grayscale conversion in gamma space, but at least with those coefficients all of R,G,B are *equally* too dark, instead of R and B getting way darker than G.

And of course this means that Y in YUV isn't true grayscale/lightness. It's just an approximation.

Anyway, VT Social migration is all done! Well, almost. Remote account avatars/headers will be popping up slowly over the next few hours, cached remote emojis will take a bit longer too, and also preview card images. Learned some lessons on how not-great Mastodon is at managing caches ^^;;

Usually you'd expect software to seamlessly deal with missing/removed data under a directory called cache... but unfortunately Mastodon has quite a bit of bookkeeping in the DB and even then some things apparently won't be refetched without manual user action, which is kind of a pain.

Turns out postgresql database restores take a bit longer than I expected... ^^;; vt.social will be back up soon!
