Why can't every 2160p 30fps camera also record in 1080p 120fps? It's the same amount of data. Why can't every 2160p 30fps camera also record in 1080p 120fps? It's the same amount of data.
Technical/Equipment Help and Information

Smartphone video cameras have had a long history of struggling with high frame rates. They reached higher pixels per second by increases in video resolution rather than frame rate.

For example, the earliest 4K 2160p 30fps video recording smartphones were released in 2013, starting with the Galaxy Note 3. (Note: The Acer Liquid S2 had only 24fps and the same chipset as the Note 3, but I am taking the Note 3 as example due to my familiarity with the Samsung product lineage).

The same amount of unencoded data per second as 2160p 30fps would be accomplished with 1080p at 120fps, yet the Note 3 and several Samsung smartphones released thereafter could only record 1080p at 60fps. 120fps was only possible at 720p, so some kind of bottleneck prevented them from recording 1080p at 120fps.

The 1080p 60fps limitation stayed all the way until the S9 (2018) suddenly quadrupled the frame rate to 240fps. The 60fps were proably not a processing limitation, because from my testing, pre-2016 Samsung smartphones were perfectly capable of playing back 1080p 120fps and 720p 240fps video with no lag (original speed, not slowed down).

Yes, I know, playing (decoding) takes less processing power than recording (encoding), but I don't see how 1080p 120fps would be more difficult to process than 2160p at 30fps. They are the same number of pixels per second. 248,832,000 to be exact.

So my closest guess is that it has something to do with the image sensor.

From what I understand, video capture resolution is limited by two things: image sensor resolution and frame buffer size.

This means a 4K 120fps capable image sensor can not capture 8K at 30fps (same data rate) if it lacks the number of pixels (7680x4320 minimum), and the device can not encode 8K video if its GPU has too small of a frame buffer size to hold 7680×4320×8×3 bits of data (width × height × bits per pixel × number of color channels, R G B). The frame buffer needs to be at least large enough to hold a single uncompressed frame.

So what is it that bottlenecks the video recording frame rate of smartphone cameras?

Why can't every smartphone, or other video camera for that matter, that can record in 2160p at 30fps also record in 1080p at 120fps? In other words, why can't resolution be proportionally traded in for frame rate?

I hereby release this post into the public domain, CC0 1.0.

Remote video production Remote video production
Business, Tax, and Copyright

I hope this isn't against any rules. I'm interested in working with international clients remotely, but I have found very little information on this type of work. Much in the same way clients conduct interviews remotely, I could absolutely offer real time monitoring to a client in the US or anywhere their virtual video village is. Everything would be way cheaper where I live, with more or less the same gear they're used to.

Is this something that is being done by any of your clients or former clients?

I find this so challenging. I find this so challenging.
Discussion / Other

I hope you realize how lucky I think you are to be proficient with your art form. I've been trying to teach myself some video making for a while now.

Once in a while I can put together a short sequence (ie. measured in seconds) that looks half-decent.

Case in point: I wanted to do a short interview with b-roll. Easy right? So, interviewee is seated, and when I cut to b-roll of them doing some task, also seated, it looks disjointed and jumpy, as if they should be doing the task while they are talking, but of course the actions don't match up. Then, when I cut to b-roll that shows the person's body and face (ie. medium-long shot), it looks weird because they are talking but their lips aren't moving in the b-roll.

Obviously I have a lot to learn, and I'm fine with that, but I bet this is so easy for you, lol.

How much would you pay for this Sports Video? How much would you pay for this Sports Video?
Feedback / I made this!

Hi there,

I am a Sport Videographer currently volunteering at a football club shooting pitch-side Videography and have been doing this since January this year. From the content i've shot, I create highlight reels for the players and have received great feedback in doing so.

I've never been paid for work before, in fact I lose about £13 a shoot to travel there but I now feel like I'm ready to. My problem is I'm not too sure how valuable my work is!

I wanted to make this post to hear what all of your opinions are on my work and how much you would pay for this content.

I feel like my work has demand to footballers trying to market themselves and build up a social following and I'm excited to see how I can make this work.

Thank you!

Help me pick a 14" MacBook Pro for photo and 4K video editing (Coming from an M1 IPad Pro) Help me pick a 14" MacBook Pro for photo and 4K video editing (Coming from an M1 IPad Pro)
Should I Buy/Recommend me a...

I’m trying to figure out which 14" MacBook Pro spec makes the most sense for me and could use some real world advice from people who actually edit on these machines.

Right now I’m editing both photo and video on an M1 iPad Pro. It’s been surprisingly solid, but it’s starting to feel slow and cramped with bigger projects and heavier timelines. That said, the fact that the iPad can handle my work at all makes me think even some of the older MacBook Pro chips (M1 Max, M2 Max, M3 Pro/Max) might still be totally fine if the deal is good enough.

My workload is a mix of Lightroom and Photoshop for photos, plus 4K YouTube and client videos with log footage, LUTs, some color grading, and basic motion graphics. I usually have a browser with a bunch of tabs open, notes, and a few other apps running while I edit.

One other piece of context: I already have a powerful custom PC at home that can crush video, but I honestly hate sitting at my home desk editing after I’ve already been at an office desk editing all day. I want a laptop that lets me edit on the couch, at the kitchen table, or out of the apartment like I have been doing with my IPad Pro

Budget wise I’m comfortable going up to around $2.5k. I definitely want a 14" MacBook Pro and at least 1 TB of internal storage. I’m aiming for at least 24 GB of RAM. Unless eveyone advices otherise.

Right now I’m mainly looking at a couple of M4 options: a base 14" M4 with 24 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD, and a 14" M4 Pro with 24 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD. The base M4 is cheaper and already looks like a big upgrade from the iPad. The M4 Pro costs more but has more CPU and GPU cores and higher memory bandwidth, so it should be better for heavier timelines and more future proof.

I’m also wondering if it would make more sense to hunt for a good deal on an older higher end chip instead of going M4. For example, a 14" M2 Max or M3 Pro/Max with 32 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD, or even an M1 Max if the price is really good. Since my M1 iPad Pro can technically handle my edits now, it feels like an M1 Max or M2 Max MacBook Pro might still be more than enough in real life, especially if I can save a lot versus a brand new M4 Pro.

Any advice or thoughts would be super helpful. Thanks!

Hello,

I wanted to know what would be the best place or best way to rent out my gear. I would also love if someone could let me know how much I should rent out all of this gear for as a package. The gear would include the following.

Sony FX6, Accessories (Original accessories, cage, v mount battery, Sennheiser MKH 416 microphone with dead cat, and Small HD Cine 7 Monitor), Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN II Sony E lens, Sachtler Flowtech 75 and Activ6.

All the gear for now, will most likely be adding more in the future such as a matte box, more batteries, case for the gear and more lenses too but no need to worry about that.

Thank you for your time!

Question about Lens Question about Lens
Technical/Equipment Help and Information

Hey! I currently have a Tamron 28-75mm which is great.... until it's not. I film a lot of musicians in small studios, or busy events where lots of people walking around. This means I don't have a lot of room to fit the subject in frame. What lens should I get to make sure I fit the subject in frame every time. I'm guessing a wider lens will do the trick but no one seems to know which one or anything so any recommendations would be hugely appreciated! Thanks guys

Hi guys,

Thinking I might replace some of my big old chunky lights with a couple of these modern compact COB light like the Zhiyun X100.

Just realised today that the competition has seriously heated up, and now there's already a dozen or more very similar lights, (from Godox, Yongnuo, Sirui etc) with their own unique features etc.

Wondering if any of you have bought some, and what your experience has been?

Personally, for my needs, fan noise and colour accuracy would be lower on the list compared with convenience and durability.

Thanks for any recommendations!

Forgive the noob question… I have a bad habit of over thinking simple things.

I’m lightning a two person knee to knee and I’m struggling with what I should be setting my key colour temp to..

As there’s no windows to motivate the light source is there a ‘best practice’

My thoughts are:

Set key and camera to 5600k to ensure a natural look? Is it as simple as that?

I will take any other advice on gimbals to look at or stay away from.

YouTube Talking head | go to audio chain for vocals? YouTube Talking head | go to audio chain for vocals?
Post-Production Help and Information

I do YouTube Talking Heads content, but I do it in untreated or controlled sound environments. (Outdoors, public, traffic) Generally, what I do is try and boom a shotgun mic about 3 feet above me and out of frame. This still picks up a good amount of ambience of course due to the setting that I’m in. What would be the optimal vocal chain to process that audio and make it sound good?

I’ve experimented some with plug-ins like izotope RX, using repair assistance to analyze the audio. If you’re familiar with the plug-in, you’ll know it can do an incredible job at removing unwanted sounds. To the point where it can almost sound too clinical, to be believable in video format. For example, if I film outside in a public park and the visual setting is obviously a park. The audio got back after using something like RX assistant ends up, sounding out of place when paired with the video.

If anyone has any experience with doing similar type of videography that I do, I would love some advice for my audio signal path.

Thanks!

Pay rates as a video editor? Pay rates as a video editor?
How do I do this? / What's This Thing?

Hi! I have been editing my own videos for a while now and I wanted to start editing for others.

I was originally planning on having my rate be ~$15AUD/minute of video, and vary it depending on the difficulty of the edit, but the more i think about it the more confusing it is. Have people charged this way and do you find that it works?

Some context: I don’t have a real portfolio outside of my own videos that I have on my own YT channel, so I don’t know how much is appropriate to charge. I didn’t originally want to do a per hour rate because it feels weird being the one to record my own hours, and i worry people will think i am taking longer for more money, but it seems to be the better option.

Should I Buy/Recommend me a...

Due to some health conditions I've recently had to drop out if uni and change up my career prospects.

I have recently begun learning how to colour grade and use software but I can't shoot any of my own footage.

I love photography and have a couple of Pentax cameras but video isn't their strong suit.

I'm currently editing and re-editing the same footage I found on a free download but I'd love to shoot some of my own and develop a personal style.

Could anyone recommend me the cheapest possible camera I could find to shoot log, second hand preferably. It doesn't need to be anything special I'd just like the creative freedom that comes with it.

Thank you

Keep sigma 18-35 or upgrade to 17-40 1.8 Keep sigma 18-35 or upgrade to 17-40 1.8
Should I Buy/Recommend me a...

Hey, I'm a Sony FX30 user and have the sigma 18-35 with a third party adapter. I've been looking to upgrade my lens because with this adapter I have no autofocus, and I would like to have that for gimbal work, and also because I think it is quite heavy, so I don't like bringing it on travel and only use it for professional work.

The MC-11 adapter for sigma in my country is around $300 usd, I've seen on youtube that with it the autofocus is quite good in the FX30, except for the loud noise it makes. If I were to buy the 18-50 2.8 for gimbal and travel and the MC-11 It would cost around the same as buying the 17-40.

Would you have the 18-35 for low light and the 18-50 for travel? Or just one all around lens like the 17-40?

A7iv stripes in recorded footage A7iv stripes in recorded footage
How do I do this? / What's This Thing?

Hello,

I occasionally record in a nightclub and in one nightclub there are round led lights and cause my footage to have stripes: e.g. here:

https://www.instagram.com/p/DH_ZaKjMfwG/?img_index=2&igsh=Ymt5N2J6MTR2NGF0

Do you have an idea to not get those? I thought the lights are probably in an other frequency like 60hz. Iam in europe so i record with 1/50. next time i am there i will need a solution otherwise the footage is cooked again 🫠

Do you have an idea? Someone in another forum said its rolling shutter, but this can’t be true right? I also see videos in the same club without those stripes and everyone is using a7iv here for nightclub video. So it be great if its not rolling shutter :d

Lavalier Mic for Pixel 9 Lavalier Mic for Pixel 9
Technical/Equipment Help and Information

TL;DR: Time and money poor volunteer, needing to know what affordable wireless lavaliers work with Instagram Reels on Pixel 9.

I have a Google Pixel 9 on Android and recently purchased a wireless lavalier mic from Amazon, and it worked beautifully with my native camera/video app, but when recording in Instagram, it didn't recognise the lavalier mic and picked up from my device. I completed all the troubleshooting required and contacted the seller on WhatsApp. They replied and agreed that it's not compatible, and they are offering a refund.

I consulted ChatGPT, and it said something along the lines that I need a USB-C with a cord to lavalier OR a USB-C to TRRS 3.5 input cord lavalier.

However, I much prefer wireless and the USB-C receiver set up from the previous one, as it worked well with my native camera/video app - I just need one that will also work in Instagram. I know some will tell me to just record in my native camera/video app and then upload to Instagram, want to cut out the middle man (editing software) and directly record in Instagram Reels to use the Green screen feature. I want to remove the friction and create on the go.

Any suggestions?

Upgrading my creative agency gear this year and looking for advice Upgrading my creative agency gear this year and looking for advice
Equipment/Software News & Reviews

Hey filmmaker community!

I wanted to ask for some advice on equipment purchases for my creative agency. We have been running the company for about six years now. We work mostly across Europe with larger institutions and organisations. Like everyone, we had some ups and downs with the economy and some clients cutting budgets, but overall we have kept recurring work and good referrals. We feel pretty confident in what we have to offer and believe there is room to grow.

We recently secured funding through a loan to invest back into the company and take our visual quality to a higher level. I mainly want to see if the community thinks we are missing something or overthinking something for an agency that works a lot on the road (not in studio), conduct a lot of interviews, love working on creative advertisements when possible, and also dabbled a bit in product shots in controlled environment.

It is a long post, so please feel free to comment only on whatever part you have experience with.

Cameras

We have been using the Canon C70 and we are extremely happy with it. So our first thought is simply to buy a third one to keep things consistent, especially for three camera interview setups. I know the C80 exists with a full frame sensor, but I am unsure if having to sell all our cameras and getting three new ones, and if the larger file size is worth it for a run and gun agency. I am open to changing my mind though if the quality really is going to be exponentionally better.

We are also thinking of adding one more camera for photography tasks like hyperlapses at events. So we might get a Canon R3 as well.

On a related note, I have never used external monitors. I can imagine it is helpful to see a bigger image. Any recommendations? Also, are there devices that let a director monitor multiple camera feeds at once during interviews?

Lenses

We are moving fully to RF lenses and want to refresh the entire set. The idea is to mix zoom lenses for b roll with fixed lenses for interviews. I want maximum quality for interviews and maximum flexibility for run and gun shooting. Does this logic make sense? Is the visual difference in fixed lenses really that noticeable?

The zooms I am looking at are all Canons: 15-35 F2.8L, 24-70 F2.8L, and 100-500 F4.5 7.1L.

For fixed lenses I am considering the 35mm F1.4L and the 50mm F1.2L. Should I look at cinema primes instead or even other focal lengths?

For funky creative shots we are also going to invest in the macro probe lens LAOWA 24mm F14. Any other fun lenses we should consider?

Bags and cases

I also want to upgrade how we transport everything. Would you go with three backpacks each holding one C70 and a couple of lenses, or would you go with Pelican cases? What is most practical for a small crew that has a small cart to move things around?

Lights

We need a full set of lights for interviews and small documentary style shoots. Ideally something powerful but still manageable for a small crew, with battery options for outdoors, temperature control, and a remote to control all lights at once. RGB would be nice but can also be an extra. I was recommended the Aputure LS C300X. What do people think of those or other similar models?

Also, regarding light control, people told me to get blackout curtains and white sheets. What exactly should I be looking at and what stands are ideal for that?

Gimbals and stabilisation

What is the current advice on gimbals? I find the standard ones clunky and not very natural in use. I was considering a body rig. Is that actually helpful or is it a pain to set up and use?

And then of course there is the rest of the usual gear: livestreaming equipment, a drone, normal tripods, monopods, and so on.

Thank you so much for your input and help!

Looking for any advice from people who started and scaled their video business. I've always been a "learn on the go" kind of person, but I would rather get some advice before I start employing people. I've heard from other types of agencies, but not specifically from content businesses.

Fixing my systems and processes is #1 on my to do list.

Recruiting has already resulted in finding rather qualified and vetted editors and organizers.

I am aware I can't do everything and I need to build an environment to let the others to thrive.

I started a content production company (glorified freelancer who learned to outsource) 3 years ago, decided to niche down and really learn how to sell. It finally gained traction from just word of mouth at year 1, and I've been growing steadily ever since. There are plenty of pains that a solo creater for hire runs into, but I am proud of how I got here.

The TLDR about my client types:

  • real estate

  • short term rentals

  • trades businesses

  • professionals with knowledge to sell

They hire me for:

  • social reels

  • listing photography

  • land sales

  • candid lifestyle content for properties

  • sales videos

  • branding videos

  • matterport property scans

  • professional team headshots

  • interview / video testimonials

  • helping organize their intellectual property into story formats and funneling people to their products / services with content and digital infrastructure.

I.e. I help them visualize anything along their sales funnel with photo and video.

Any and all advice would be great.

The Ancient World through an FPV drone The Ancient World through an FPV drone
Feedback / I made this!

I've been combining my passion for ancient history with FPV drone technology to document archaeological sites across Greece in a way they've never been seen before.

Using DJI drones, I'm creating immersive aerial tours of ancient cities, fortifications, and temples—from the sacred grounds of Delphi to the fortified walls of Messene.

The perspective is unlike traditional photography or even standard drone footage. FPV allows for dynamic, sweeping movements through columns, along ancient walls, and across landscapes that once hosted some of history's most significant events. Each video focuses on a specific archaeological site with its ancient regional name (like Phokis, Boiotia, or Messenia), giving viewers both the thrill of flight and an educational journey through Classical antiquity.

What makes this approach unique:

The footage captures architectural details and spatial relationships that are difficult to appreciate from ground level—how defensive walls integrated with terrain, how sanctuaries were positioned in their landscapes, or the sheer scale of ancient urban planning. It's like being a bird flying through history.

I'm documenting sites across multiple ancient regions: from the Phokian cities of Delphi and Krisa, to Boeotian sites like Leuktra and Eleutherai, to major centers like Messene. Each video serves as both a historical record and an immersive experience of these UNESCO World Heritage sites and lesser-known ancient locations.

You can explore the full collection here: https://www.youtube.com/@cocobios

Note: All flights are conducted in compliance with Greek aviation regulations and archaeological site guidelines, with respect for these protected historical locations.

Hey guys, I’m looking for a professional and reliable video editor to work on a short snowboarding film for me. Im going on a CAT ski trip in February or March and I’d like to capture a few hours of film of my experience in Fernie, BC. I’d like the duration of the video to be around 20-30 minutes and a dynamic, fast-paced style with tight cuts synced to music, strategic use of slow motion (speed ramping), creative transitions, and impactful sound design!

I don’t have many specifics, I don’t know if people want to be paid hourly or flat, the duration of the time spent on this edit depends on how long my footage is. Mods keep taking my posts down and I don’t know why, I’m new to this subreddit and I’m really just looking for someone to talk to and help me out.

I am located in Alberta, Canada and will be paying in CAD with a flexible budget.

Please let me know if you or anyone you know specializes in this action sport style of editing I’d greatly appreciate it and my DMs are open to anyone!

Thanks.

How do I do this? / What's This Thing?

Hello, I was wondering if the weird shakes/wiggling in this shots are just me being too shaky with the camera or some settings I'm getting wrong... Here is the video and my settings, I'm doing some trys for a short movie I would like to shoot next week. (sorry for my broken english!)

Which wireless mic to get considering possible pending DJI ban? Which wireless mic to get considering possible pending DJI ban?

Edit: Let me rephrase - should I get DJI Mic 2, or Rode wireless GO III or Rode Wireless Pro for my usage?

Located in US. I was thinking of getting the DJI mic 2 but now not so sure. Worries of possibility of DJI products losing software support in the future. Should I get a Rode wireless GO III or wireless Pro instead? Needing 3.5mm jack and 32 bit float sounds nice to have.

Need a wireless mic for my wife’s YouTube channel. Filming with iPhone now and maybe with new mirrorless in the future. I would like to use the system with my existing Rode SmartLav+ lapel mic or Sennheiser MKE400 in shotgun.

If I get Rode wireless pro or GO III, what’s the best way to get audio for iPhone video? Record audio separately to mic internal storage and clap to sync later in post? Or connect the mic receiver to the iPhone lightning port and it dangles from the USB cable or got to hold onto it or strap it somewhere on tripod?

Any tips shooting events or concerts? Any tips shooting events or concerts?
How do I do this? / What's This Thing?

I shot 4 days of a festival - not really festival but 4 days of events across a city. At the time I didn't think things were going too bad, but looking back - everything is washed over in those blue green stage lights, audiences were so dimmly light it was hard to get shots and other events were so fast paced that I felt I didn't get much magic moments - people very conscious of the camera in the room and acting unnatural

Is this how it goes?

Equipment/Software News & Reviews

Hey everyone, was wanting to dabble into videography and was wondering how much I should expect to pay and what type of quality am I getting. I’m purely just going to be doing shots of my motorbike so a lot of sunset and night time shoots if that helps with info at all, I currently just take videos with my iPhone 13 Pro and was wondering what’s like the price comparison in terms of money for quality. I don’t know what’s considered a good budget but if I have $300 to spend on some good used stuff is it worth it or just stuck to my phone. Thanks

Compact Video Cam v Iphone 15 Pro Compact Video Cam v Iphone 15 Pro
Technical/Equipment Help and Information

I have been shooting short highlight reals of my sons football team for a couple of years now on my iPhone 15 pro (was a 12 originally) I am now getting into it more and wondered if I would be better off getting a dedicated video camera. The iPhone footage is great until you start really zooming in for close ups.

I am thinking of a compact camera like the Sony ZV-E10 ii as I like the fact I can shoot without drawing too much attention. If I had a large camera the kids would just play up to it and sometimes opposition parents can get a bit moody (even though they are filming themselves) ! Also the camera would need to have in body stabilisation as I dont use a tripod or gimbal.

What i am looking for advice on is whether or not I would notice a big difference between what i am getting out of the iPhone. To be honest it is probably more for me than the other parents as I am probably the only one that notices the lack of quality in some of the shots. However I dont want to go spending a large amount of cash for only a marginal improvement in quality.

Thoughts welcome

Setting up a home studio for product videos — looking for tips & experiences! Setting up a home studio for product videos — looking for tips & experiences!
Technical/Equipment Help and Information

Hey everyone, I’m currently building a small home studio for shooting product-focused videos, and I’d love to get your tips, experiences, and any “things you only realize once you start” advice.

Here’s what I have so far: • Sony A7III • lenses ranging from wide-angle to macro • motorized slider • fog machine • product turntable • a couple of Godox SL60W lights • a 300W Neewer RGB light • and a bunch of smaller LED lights for accents/fill

Next, I want to install a backdrop system for multiple paper rolls + a greenscreen. I’m still unsure whether to go with an electric system or keep it simple with a manual one. Anyone here who has experience with both?

For those who’ve set up a home studio for product videos: What are the things people consistently overlook at the beginning? Any must-haves you didn’t think of until later?

Really appreciate any insights you can share.

Thanks in advance & cheers 🙌

HELP! Hybrid camera choice HELP! Hybrid camera choice
Should I Buy/Recommend me a...

Hi! I'm a videographer and photographer currently using a Fuji X-T3 with a 17-70mm 2.8 but I'm feeling to get a new camera because of the AF-C.

When making videos, my X-T3 is perfect but I feel like I need a better autofocus, for example I need object tracking.

Now my choices are: X-T5, X-H2 (in these cases I would keep the lens) or Lumix S5 II. My dream camera is the A7 IV but it's too pricey and either are the lenses. I would not go with sony apsc because I need the double sd slot.

So considering I'm both a photographer and a videomaker (wedding, events, music videos, shortfilm) what should I choose? As you read my budget is limited (around 2000€ lens included).

Discussion / Other

I’m trying to choose a solid captions tool for short form content, but every app I test seems to have at least one deal-breaking issue, either it being bad accuracy, laggy exports, missing features, or random bugs (like in Captions app sometimes the text just changes its color and exports are too long)

Which captions app do you rely on? And if you switched away from one - why?

Zv1-ii, dji osmo pocket 3, or DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro for A-roll type footage in vlogs type videos? Zv1-ii, dji osmo pocket 3, or DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro for A-roll type footage in vlogs type videos?
Discussion / Other

Basically been rocking the Zve-10 for a couple years now with its "16-55mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS kit" lens. Recently the bought the "Sony 35mm f/1.8 OSS" lens and been loving the somewhat nifty fifty vibes (because it's cropped).

But rather than swapping or buying a whole new fast lens just for wider angles. I figured, I could use 2nd Camera with a short focal length for those up close, in the action, in the moment footage.

So I'm not sure which is best for the job

I don't often show my face. Well I do, but I don't like selfie shots. I like being able to also take quality photos and don't want to worry too much about it breaking easy in cold or wet environments.

From my research
Zv1-ii - looks like it gives me more option akin to any other camera. and good for also photography as well. But the stabalization is meh, but also swappable batteries. and the size of it is great

pocket 3 - seems right up my alley, literally built into a gimbal so the stabalization is great. but not sure of its durability with how small it is. love the auto tracking feature. sucks that it only lasts roughly 2h with 4k recording without the extra batterypack. and no swappable batteries.

Action 5 Pro - the image quality not as good as pocket 3, but love how durable it is, the digital stabalization looks good even compared to the Zv1-ii. swappable batteries and a battery charging dock option is amazing.

Unless there are better alternatives for wide angle A-roll footage. I'm not sure which is best

Is Apple ProRes actually worth the file size? Is Apple ProRes actually worth the file size?
Post-Production Help and Information

Hey there,

absolute amateur here. Just recently we´ve started filming some educational content for the company. Since we mostly have outdated cameras anyway (Canon EOS R 2019) i was thinking about trying to use my personal iPhone 17 Pro Max for the next shoot.

Therefore playing around with different codecs and the blackmagic camera app. Looking at ProRes content and H.265 content side by side i cant really make out the huge benefit that ProRes would have for such basic educational content.

Might be because i just got into DaVinci Resolve and only know the very basics of color grading or the downloaded LUT is not too good.

ProRes is around 25 times the file size. And I think everybody agrees, that it´s not 25 times better.

But what would you say? Is this more of a "enthusiast" feature or really benefitial to have decent content?
If you had to put a number to it. Will ProRes give me 10%, 20%, or even more flexibitly compared to H.265?

And do you think the latest iphone can compete (or even outperform) a 6 year old camera?

Tripod for phone with cooler. Tripod for phone with cooler.
Technical/Equipment Help and Information

I need to record 2-hour videos on my phone, but it overheats after 10 minutes and stops after ~30 minutes. I want to attach a phone cooler with fans, but many tripods don’t fit bulky coolers. I also need a tripod that:

  • supports horizontal (16:9) recording.

  • has pan & tilt capability,

  • has a height of at least 1.5 - 2 m (6').

  • and ideally includes or works with a gimbal, so I can pick up the tripod and shoot while walking around.

Can anyone recommend a tripod that supports all these features?

MacBook Pro Advice MacBook Pro Advice
Technical/Equipment Help and Information

I am in the market for a new laptop, and after researching, I am needing opinions to help with the final selection. For reference, I work in wedding videography, primarily in Premiere Pro. All files are stored on an external hard-drive. Ideally the less I can spend on this, the better, but I still want to be sure I am purchasing a good product that will be efficient and will last me a long while.

I am between five options currently:

- 16" MacBook Pro w/ M4 Pro; 24GB RAM; 512GB SSD; 20-Core GPU ($2,189)

- 16" MacBook Pro w/ M4 Pro; 24GB RAM; 1TB SSD; 20-Core GPU ($2,499)

- 16" MacBook Pro w/ M4 Pro; 48GB RAM; 512GB SSD; 20-Core GPU ($2,539)

- 14" MacBook Pro w/ M4 Max; 36GB RAM; 1TB SSD; 32-Core GPU ($2,809)

My commentary:

- Should I pursue greater than 24GB of RAM, or should this be enough for what I am doing?

- Is there any purpose in pursuing the M4 Max option as opposed to the M# Pro options?

Thanks to all of you for time and help.

How good are the camera and microphone on AR glasses? How good are the camera and microphone on AR glasses?
Equipment/Software News & Reviews

For anyone who has tried the RayNeo X3 Pro (or similar AR glasses), how good are the camera and microphone in real use?

Some things I’m curious about:

  • Is the video quality actually good enough for everyday recording?

  • How well does the mic handle noisy environments or wind?

  • Any issues with latency, stabilization, or auto exposure?

I’m trying to gauge whether the X3 Pro can replace pulling out my phone for quick captures, or if it’s still more of a “nice to have” feature.

- water and dust resistant
- optional external DMC capability
- cheaper and more output than their famous 300c

Can't believe Amaran (Aputure's budget line) dropped a brand new range right after releasing the new Storm BLAIR engine series. They're really on a roll.

Was considering the Storm 400x for output with colour, but now I might go with the Ray 660c instead.

How can I help my daughter to build on her interest with videography? How can I help my daughter to build on her interest with videography?
Discussion / Other

I have a six year old who loves shooting videos in her room playing with toys. Lately she’s been playing around with my iPhone to shoot. Over time, I’ve noticed that she’s starting to pay more attention to her framing & making sure that she’s got her shot down right.

I want to help her grow her interest, but idk where to start. I shoot videos for a hobby & enjoy putting them together, and want to teach her. But I feel like that’s a bit over her head. I currently have a Canon R6ii that I shoot with.

Any suggestions on how/where to start? Should I get her her own camera? Or let her continue to use mine?

I don’t want to push it on her, so I’m hesitant to really go for it, but I’m nervous to let her use my phone/camera on her own, which she wants to do when making videos.

I just recently bought the Viltrox DC-550 monitor and I thought it would have the grid lines with shade overlays to see what I was my 9:16 frame while shooting horizontal, it does have an option like this but it only crops in horizontal, which is useless imo. Is there any uptade firmware that can provide this or have you guys find any other option, let me know! Thank you

So, I'm a photographer, but I recently got my hands on a gimbal for my camera. Bought it super cheap as a defective one, but got lucky and got a brand new one under warranty. Now I face the decision of whether I want to get into filmmaking too. Maybe someone can refer some resources or tutorials that'll help me figure out if this is my thing or not before I invest in it. I've got some decent lenses, but they're not 100% right for video. Also, the best thing I've got for video right now is a Nikon D850.🫡

hello there. i have an electric bike company and i need a few shots of someone riding the bike and it still . i would also like to take photos, however i have pretty much no previous experience with a camera. it is out of my budget to be able to hire a videoographer, and to rent an fx3 costs me about 90 GBP which is good for me. do you think it is easy enough for someone to learn how to use these cameras and record to a good standard? thanks a lot (forgot to add i have experience with editing cinematics and so on davinci resolve, as i used to have a few youtube channels, i am familiar with it)

Need help recovering/repairing corrupted video file Need help recovering/repairing corrupted video file
Technical/Equipment Help and Information

So I was recording an event and one of my shots was about 30 mins (.MOV, H265). When I got home and was transferring all the files to my hard drive (from a CF express type B), this specific video file stopped mid-transfer, showed an error message, and basically became a shorter version of itself. Only the first few mins played, and the remaining time just displayed the last frame frozen, with no sound. The metadata still said the original size and duration, but the actual video was far less. Oh and the file remained unable to copy at all due to corruption.

Also, i'm not sure what happened since then, but the file currently says it is 0kb, and doesn't play at all. I made a byte-for-byte copy of the entire card to be safe, and have tried using disk drill and VLC to fix this, but no luck recovering anything past that last frame (which is only the first few mins). From what I've learned, it may be 'truncated'?

I'm really lost on how to get this footage back, but I figure it's gotta be on the disk somewhere in some form, since I never deleted anything? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Anyone else deal with this type of corruption before? Any simple fixes I'm missing? Any recommended software?

TIA!

How to navigate raising rates? How to navigate raising rates?
Business, Tax, and Copyright

Hi all—I’ve been doing video work professionally for a couple years now, and it’s occurred to me that it’s time to hike my rates a bit. I’ve raised them by very small amounts as I’ve become more comfortable working with clients—but I’ve reached a point where I’m busting my ass and working for rates that aren’t reflecting the amount of work & expertise. I’m mostly shooting interviews & events right now. Here are my current rates:

1/2 day: $250/up to 5hrs Full day: $500/up to 10hrs

Edit: $50/hr

I know that half day rate needs to go, there’s no good reason to keep offering that. What might be a good place to raise my rates to after the end of this quarter? What are you charging for similar work? Open to opinions.

Thanks!

MAGELLAN starring Gael Garcia Bernal shot on a Lumix GH7? MAGELLAN starring Gael Garcia Bernal shot on a Lumix GH7?
Equipment/Software News & Reviews

Hey all. I thought this was interesting. A new historical film based on Ferdinand Magellan is coming out soon and has gotten quite a lot of acclaim for its visuals on the festival circuit. I was reading a review on ScreenRant and the author mentioned it was shot on a Panasonic J7. As this doesn't exist, we can only conclude they meant to say GH7.

The director's (Lav Diaz) use of Lumix cameras is well documented, and his features going back a decade have been shot on GH and S cameras.

Pretty cool!
