Pedobear is a 4chan meme, depicting a pedophilic bear.

Origin and history[edit | edit source]

The bear character originates from the popular textboard website 2channel in Japan, where it was introduced, in the form of Shift_JIS art, as クマー (Kumā), a made-up interjection based on the Japanese word for bear, kuma. Unlike Pedobear, Kumā is simply a Japanese character that reads as "extinguish" above its head. A mirror of the first ever 2channel thread with Kuma can be found here.

Various posts modified it until reaching the final form as this ASCII.

Kuma was eventually adopted by English-speaking anons and evolved into something completely different, in most cases pedobear was used to mock and troll pedophiles. Nowadays the meme has largely died out
