The male is a hunter and gatherer, he needs to be fast and nimble in order to pursue prey and reach difficult locations.

The female is a homekeeper that has to handle childbirth and provide nutritious milk to the newborn. Her partner may be away days at a time or may not return at all, necessitating large energy reserves. She also has to defend her home, which is where additional bodymass also provides an advantage in terms of raw power and intimidation factor.
