Do we need major deflation?: What got me thinking of this is Trump's proposal to start getting rid of the insurance model for paying for healthcare by giving each citizen a certain amount of money per year, say $4000, as a healthcare allowance that they can use as they decide. People can make their own decisions about what to treat and what to leave untreated while negotiating prices with their doctors or hospitals. This is not a bad idea. Healthcare is bankrupting the government and individuals and the insurance model is clearly broken. We'll probably have to lower our expectations a lot in the near future, not just about healthcare but for all aspects of life, since we're living beyond our means as a country. So let's say we eliminate health insurance. This will force doctors and hospitals to take a pay cut. Those who can't do a budget with less than half their previous revenue will go out of business and new practices and hospitals will take their place, structured to run lean, just as economic models have taught us since the 1700s. In other words, the economy adapts through selection pressures, just like life does. So maybe a physician will make the equivalent of $70k per year in the future, a surgeon $100k, a nurse $40k, but everything will cost a lot less and there will be less money in society, hence deflation. Why is deflation considered such a bogeyman? I'm not seeing why. The endless growth model is unsustainable anyway, and whatever cannot be sustained, will not be sustained, just because nature has limits that constrain growth. Eventually, "development" will max out and societies will be as developed as possible. This implies, at best, a steady state economy or else a peak and decline trajectory where things just de-develop. Either way, deflation is inevitable, and it's better to get inevitable things over and done with than to procrastinate and kick the can down the road until the inevitable consequences are much worse.
