Probably not. it's a good story, but not a very good game, a pattern you'd know fucking well if you knew anything about 90's point and click games, and while the presentation is interesting, I kinda fail to see its value given that the original short story exists.

Sure the Ellison's read of the iconic speech is fucking unforgettable, but otherwise, the whole game is just a very sanitized retelling of the original story, with most of the edge sanded off, all framed through what was fundamentally a bad gameplay plan.

Just read the original and listen to Elison ham up the HATE monologue on youtube. It's genuinely the better way to experience this story - and story is literally the only thing worth while about this game.

While you are at it, pick up a copy of Mirrorshades, Flowers for Algernon, some Ted Chiang short story antology, and maybe even the OG Electric Sheep while you are at it. You'll thank me later.

The game pretty much exists in order to expand on AM as a character, basically. And I do think it accomplishes that relatively well.

AMs shitty voice acting is immersion breaking(idgaf its Ellison) and you need a guide for the nazi because of some bullshit dialogue order that made me have to replay half the game

the concept of eternal suffering dealt by an insane spite driven and jealous machine is what makes it a great story, the characters i couldnt really give two fucks about though

>The game pretty much exists in order to expand on AM as a character, basically.
That is an interesting point, actually.
I've experienced these works in the wrong order: I've played the game first, and didn't have a clue that it was based on a novel, then much, much later when I got into cyberpunk obsessively, I finally realized that holy shit: this is the original on which that game I loved few years ago was based on.

Consequently, the book is much fresher in my memory, I never felt the need to go back to the game once I found out the book exists (well it's not a book but you get it), and it is possible my memories of the game is slightly muddled by this. I remember realizing the game being very much just a lesser version of the short story. Same, just without the excess (and while I'm not fond of excess in fiction in general, the sadism of the original text is not needless or self-indulgent, and while I understand why they sanitized the game so heavily, it is detracting from the story). I don't remember the game actually adding anything more to the game (besides being audio-visual experience), but it is possible that my memory is at fault.

Bottom line: It's not bad game by any means, for a while it was one of my personal all-time favorites. It's definitely one of the reasons why I became obsessed with cyberpunk and that whole school of grim sci-fi for most of my life. It's just that yeah... I loved it purely for the story, and the story is better in the book, as far as I remember it.

>Do you think it would have worked better as a VN?
No, but I have an very strong personal distaste for VN's in general, I don't think it's a good medium in general. I know there are good VN's, but I believe they are good despite being VN's, not because of it. Take that as a rambling of an old snob though, not a 'I'M ABSOLUTELY RIGHT ON THIS" kind of deal. I find VN's to be the worst of visual, worst of literal, and absolutely nothingburger from interactive side of things. Too text heavy and too visually bland to be a visual medium, but not having the advantage of being entirely textual either, interaction being barely present and having no mechanical depth... I just don't see any advantage to something being presented as a VN compared to it being either a text, or a visual thing (like a comic or a movie), too basic and restrictive to take advantage of being interactive.

But... I played like 10 VN's in my whole life, and finished maybe 2 of them, tops. So my opinion probably should not matter.
Also two of my all-time favorite games started as a VN idea, though they eventually metastasized into something... very different. So I should be grateful for that. It certainly did inspire some people to make some amazing things.

>Have you listened to radio drama?
No, but I will, thank you for the recommendation. I'm very much on the hunt for audiobooks or radiodrama's to listen to during walks, and this seems like a perfect place to remind myself of the story, since I haven't picked it up since like 2010.
Also, it's weird how obsessive Ellison is about voicing AM in every adaptation, isn't it? Does not seem very... healthy.
Then again he wrote the damn thing, he obviously wasn't a very healthy person.
>>
>>726082067
I had no clue that Ellison was so close to Ray Bradbury. Man, what a fucking time to be alive back when that generation of writers were at their prime. Bradbury, Elison, Bear, Gibson, all of those assholes going to bars together.
>>
>>726086162
>Making AM sound more like glados or shodan would have quadrupled the emotional impact of his monologues
I guess that's not necessarily a bad voice direction if what you are looking for is contrast, but AM's voice acting is like, the most iconic thing about him right next to his depiction as a pillar with the hate monologue. If he sounded just like HAL 9000 it would be a tad less memorable.
>>
>>726087007
More importantly, theme wise, the whole POINT of the story is that AM is more human than the humans are. This isn't even some kind of revelation or twist of the story, it's established from the first second he appears. Depicting him as robotic would completely contradict his most important characteristic. There is a reason why Ellison insists on voicing him, and insist on hamming it up, actually playing up the irrationality of it.

>What the dictionaries do isn't meaningful anymore
No, it's just that most people genuinely do not understand what dictionaries are for. Look up prescriptive vs. descriptive functions of a dictionary and the whole debate surrounding that subject, starting in like mid 18th century and ending with the emergence of actual semiotics as a discipline in 1910-1940.
Dictionaries don't exist for the reason you think they exist, literally since Course in General Linguists came out back in 1908.

>>726089157
>I'm sure that matters to pedantic fucks but reality is made of how things are really seen and used
Actually, that is precisely the damn point you moron.
Use does not arise from meaning. Meaning arises from use. Dictionaries do not, and CANNOT serve a PRESCRIPTIVE role, which is what you seem to expect from them. Haven't been, LONG before 1960's.
Which is why they need to be continuously adjusted. Meaning is not fixed, it shifts as language naturally and continuously evolves. Hence the whole "literally" being changed from strictly meaning the opposite of figuratively, to having both the older function, but also being used as a form of emphasis. Because once that function reaches a critical mass, it becomes that new meaning, it changes and the old definition is no longer correct.

What you are saying and the thing you hate and complain about are LITERALLY the same thing. You are just very dumb, lost and confused.

>Try to argue after you've touched pussy. It feels too easy acing you like this
You aced me by saying words you don't understand and that don't mean anything. What makes it all the more funny is that not only are you wrong, you are EXACTLY the OPPOSITE of correct, and your understanding of how dictionaries work is actually exact copy of what radical left wing believes/wants them to be.
The entire CORE idea behind PC culture and everything related is based on linguistic determinism, which is a belief that prescriptive authorities govern use, other than the opposite which is what I've said.
The core idea behind all of that lefty bullshit, and something that was already exhaustively described back in 1984, is that you need to control language (e.g. enforce PRESCRIPTIVE FUNCTION to definitions), in order to force change of meaning - ergo, change of behavior. Left wing attitude towards language, and meaning generation in particular, is: "change the dictionary first, and that will force people to change how they act.

The idea behind actual semiotics, the foundation of all modern general linguistics, and the point I was making, is that is not how it works, and absolutely should not be how we should push it: meaning is derived from behavior, and not the other way around.

The same fucking thing you defend, is the thing you hate. It really is a comedy gold mine. Also, 99% of people who actually manage contemporary dictionaries are exclusively quanti-linguists. And nothing says "left wing politics" like collocational token frequency tabs!

Fucking mong, I deeply and truly thank you for this little stand up routine you provide me with. I wish you'd go even more unhinged, but I take what I can get.

You do realize that your are like a 5 years old trying to explain a guy with a doctor's degree in physics how he is wrong about how the universe works, right?
You HAVE figured out that I actually have education and trying and literal years of work in this subject, right? While you have literally a kindergarten tier grasp on the subject.

This can't end well for you. It cannot end up being anything but fucking hilarious to me an incredibly embarrassing for you.
You are contradicting yourself in the SAME SENTENCE, simultaneously calling me a pedant and being angry because I do not see definitions as prescriptive - in the same fucking sentence, you complain about two ENTIRELY CONTRADICTORY positions at the same time. You don't know what the word pedant means and you are trying to argue semiotics with someone who does that for a fucking living.

What do you expect from this exchange? I'm genuinely completely baffled, I have no clue what you thought is going to happen here.

How would you POSSIBLY THINK you could ever be taken seriously?! What kind of psychotic break is that?

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. Its themes are incredibly nuanced, and without a solid grasp of literature, philosophy, and psychoanalysis, most of the ideas will go over a typical gamer's head. There's also Ellison's commentary on humanity's technological hubris and moral failings, which are deftly woven into the narrative - his exploration of the collective guilt and suffering of our species is heavily influenced by Cold War anxieties and a pessimistic view of human nature, for instance.
The intellectuals who engage with this story understand these layers; they have the mental capacity to truly appreciate the depths of the work, to realize that it's not just a game - it's a commentary on LIFE itself. As a consequence, people who dislike I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream truly ARE philistines - of course they wouldn't appreciate, for example, the symbolic significance of the Cartesian and Biblical allusions in AM's name, or the way the narrative confronts the nature of suffering and the human condition through Freudian complexes.
I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those intellectually limited simpletons staring blankly as Ellison's genius unfolds itself in front of them. What fools... how I pity them. And yes, by the way, I DO have a HATE Pillar tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the discerning few - only those who can demonstrate that their grasp of speculative fiction is within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.

My guess would be that with information so freely available, and so many videos summarising aspects of academia, the impression that surface level skimming these subjects is the same as immersing in them deeply for several years under tutelage might have arisen. If I'm onto something with this, it might explain the insecurity and frustration that could arise of realising that such an assumption is in fact false, and you can't become an expert by sampling the conclusions or cliff notes alone.

Maybe if you don't know what the word "pedant" means, you should not get into arguments about fucking semiotics. It's not something you are in any way equipped to talk about. That is not snobbism, you moron. I don't fucking go around telling people how they are wrong about molecular biology.

It's the most rudimentary notion of knowing the limits of your understanding. If I was like you, I'd be screaming at actual molecular biologist about how epigenetics is a jewish commie scam...

I don't pretend like I know anything about metabolics behind methylization of DNA. And I merely suggest you fucking learn to do the same.
It's absolutely fine to not know anyting about general linguistics. It's a highly specialized and niche field, something most people don't need to know.

Just don't pretend like you do. As much as it is funny to me, it's also really fucking badly reflecting on you. To a point where it borders on being a symptom of a mental disorder.

When you see people talk about something you have NO experience with, just... don't fucking butt in.

More specifically, in context of dictionaries, a pedant is a person who treats them as entirely prescriptive, insists that there is only one possible interpretation, and that is the one previously formally established. Specifically, a pedant would insist that the meaning of the word "literally" CANNOT shift, and refuse, even fight against the idea that contemporary dictionaries could or should change because of the general use changing. You know: what you said.

You are the pedant here. I am what is called a proceduralist in terms of philosophy of language.

It actually comes up more often than you'd think, the discipline is niche but the subject of what constitutes meaning and how to reasonably determine it is actually very universal, and people run into it very often.

Most of them just don't know there is a field dedicated to that particular problem.

Not one person. A group of them. 7 I think in the book? It's been a while.
And just torturing them does not quite do it justice. He is creating an intricate, multilayered HELL for them. Incredibly complex sets of traps and layers of nightmare. It's kinda what Silent Hill does to people except tens of thousands of times worse.
And SH works as a videogame. Also, both in the game and the original story, the people have to cooperate and eventually figure out how to escape, which they ultimately do succeed.
All and all it works pretty well for a videogame.
Except the real game is a 90's point and click. Meaning, the gameplay sucks.

Get a laptop with some decent display, or a kindle. I mean I'm absolutely for people buying and owning physical books, I'm the kind of guy who is genuinely "proud" of his physical library - but at the same time it is very inconvenient, and the issue with reading on-screen text being unpleasant and physically eye-straining has been solved already. I have a fucking Surface and I spend around 6 hours a day reading on that thing. I still love physical books when it comes to fiction, but if I had to do my job-related reading from paper, I'd go absolutely mental.
>>

>Should I get a kindle or a laptop just for reading you think?
If it's a motivational thing and not a physical "god this fucking hurts" problem, you probably do not need another device just for reading. And in that case, I don't have any sage advice. I find myself going through periods of extended inability to read for entertainment, sometimes for several months, and then sudden spurts in which I read a book in a day.
I'm pretty sure I'm not in control of that, and it is definitely related to my mental well being: I lose ability to focus on reading anything outside of my job requirements when I'm overworked, stressed or going through a seasonal depression.
So in my case, help would be just the basic mental hygiene shit: get your daily routine fixed, get more exercise in, that kind of shit that everybody knows, and nobody believes.

That is the best I can offer you. When I was mentioning getting a different device, I really was thinking of the problem of eye-strain and related screen problems. I used to avoid reading on-screen for a decade because I had a shitty comp with a shitty, old display, and assumed this is a problem inherent to all or most screens but now: turns out nearly every device made past 2015 has solved that problem.

Reddit-like behavior is best exemplified by your two huge, wordy posts outlining your credentials as if an appeal to your own authority matters more than actual working knowledge on a subject. It showed a considerable amount of haughtiness on your part. This is typical of Redditors, as appeal to authority (Trust the experts!) is popular with them. Credentials are less important than you think, especially in this discipline. It's not like we're arguing over brain surgery, c'mon...
It's the argument that's important. Not your background.

When you declared your intelligence, you acted like a Redditor. To a Redditor, having high intelligence is considered something to lean on. Like wanking over your spec sheet rather than your actual performance. It's not your IQ that matters, but what you actually do.

And I guess finally I'd say it's your overall smug twatty-ness that really hammers the Redditor accusations home. Especially when you ran down the road of assuming everyone else is simply "not educated enough" or "jealous of your accomplishments." It is, again, typical of someone there to focus more on things that really don't matter to the discussion. Truth matters. Logic matters. Not your accomplishments (because frankly we can all lie here.)

So in a sense: If you'd simply just presented your argument without engaging in public masturbatory faggotry, you'd have just simply won the argument, instead of looking like a fart-sniffing cunty Redditor.

But as to the argument itself; you are right that the word literally has a new meaning because of the rules of language. But I was also correct in that the change only occurred because of intellectual laziness of the masses. It's not an improvement that occurred here. It's just sheer idiocy on display by the general public, and a spinelessness on the part of the "intellectuals" acting as gatekeepers of our language. You worthless dipshits.
>>
I get why AM hates humans so much now
>>
>>726105590
It is very interesting how this common parlance definition of a redditor happens to boil down to "everything you specifically did in this thread (or more precisely what you thought I was doing). Weird. Almost feels like you pulled a definition out of your ass just to tailor it to your frustration from this specific conversation.

But what makes it funnier is the fact that 90% of what you accuse me of doing, didn't happen.

>outlining your credentials as if an appeal to your own authority
I actually avoided doing that while you were already calling me a redditor. I brought that up only when the discussion got truly silly. Also if the idea that education on a subject is relevant if you want to discuss that subject is reddit, then "reddit" just means "sane". The fact that you are still offended by this is mindboggling. That isn't reddit. That is you being a tourist here, actually, thinking being a RETARD is what defines 4chan culture. Especially if the subject is literally an academic field
>When you declared your intelligence, you acted like a Redditor.
I didn't. In fact I very specifically distanced myself from that appeal, pointing out that experience and education are relevant, baseline intelligence far less.

>and I guess finally I'd say it's your overall smug twatty-ness that really hammers the Redditor accusations home
So again: "reddit" means "you make me feel insecure".
I'm very glad we got all the way back to the start and you confirmed what I said.

"Reddit" means "I am angry because you make me insecure but I also don't have a point." Cool.

You did not have to waste 2000 characters on that message. You could just say:
"You are right, but I hate admitting that."

That is also a very typical Redditor argumentative style; accusing people of being insecure is typical of leftists and by extension; Redditors.
You really would fit in very well there. You have all the personality hallmarks.

>You really would fit in very well there. You have all the personality hallmarks.
I doubt it, mostly because none of the characteristics you described are in any way, shape or form relevant to what Reddit is today.

This is actually 2009 stereotype of what Reddit was. Which might make this collection of vague stereotypes actually older than you are. Definitely a decade older than your presence on this board is. It's on par with thinking facebook is overrunning with people posting pictures of their food. It's hilariously disconnected from the endless hive of creepy shit that Reddit actually is nowdays.

Again child. You don't actually have to do this. You do not need to humiliate yourself like this. There NO purpose to lying like this.

OK, I'm convinced now. I take everything back. I mean there was that point where you said I'm a pedant (I'm the opposite), you said that I flaunted my intelligence (I did the opposite), and you know, made up a definition of "redditor" purely and literally just taking step by step what I said (or you thought I said), then claiming that is totally a "Common parlance defintion", but you said you don't ever lie, so I guess everything is resolved.

>>
>>726110794
I already did. I'm just now making sure you can understand it.

Also: you REALLY need to learn to say "No, I don't know."
Every dumb shit you said in this thread is just an extension of your pathological inability to say "I don't know."

Also, mirroring is a somewhat common pattern of response to overwhelming social stimuli among people with notably decreased cognitive functions: medium or severe mental retardation, various forms of dementia, some forms of brain damage, less commonly among low functioning but verbal autists.

Basically, when a very disfunctional brain is faced with a social situation that it can't figure out how to respond to, one of the patterned reaction is just... repeating the last thing the other person said.

The brain knows it is supposed to respond to social interaction, but the brain has no capacity to figure out what to respond, and this repeating what the other person said is an instinctive attempt to resolve the situation.

So... do you understand why I'm bringing that up, or will you need yet another lesson today. I'm giving you an out here, consider carefully what you reply. I really do not take joy in humiliating you anymore. It has long since shifted from being entertaining to just being very, very sad.

We don't need to continue doing this, but it is going to be your choice. You need to learn to take actual responsibility.

It's honestly an insult how buggy this game is. Items straight up disappearing and reappearing in inventory, whole quests resetting out of nowhere and hard locks.
Only redeeming state of the game is that it is so bugged that you can get the best ending anyway because the last chapter of course bugs out as well and gives you all things even if you did not collect them in the previous chapters.

Thematically, it's framed that way to highlight how self-absorbed the humans still could be even when it came escaping the hell they had been trapped into. The survivors barely tolerating each other's presence is a recurring theme, *at least* in the original. Ted spontaneously going in for the kill while knowing he would be left behind is not commemorable for its ingenious (because normally AM would just stop them, as he has done before), but because it almost was a purely selfless action.

If you really didn't know Ellison was a Jew, you probably only ever watching youtube videos about IHNMAIMS and never looked into anything else he did, including the GAME IHNMAIMS.
From the top
>constantly calls himself a "Little Jew from Ohio"
>is known in Hollywood for constantly suing people, winning lawsuits, and wanting to be paid for everything he does
>has a nasally Jewish accent
>when writing the game, made Nimdok a Jewish Nazi whose good ending is getting killed by the literal Jewish golem to repent for partaking in the holocaust
Short stories include:
>a man living with his mother into he is middle aged and fucking a hooker on the day the world ends
>a story about a Nazi in Brazil getting killed by tree people
>a boy finding out his aunt's soul (her likeness) got trapped in a laughtrack used in sitcoms
Among many others
And
>is known to be the most aggressive man in the SF scene who started fights all the time
>groped a woman live on stage during an awards show
>"Met Harlan Ellison? Tell us what a great guy he really is. (We accept all kinds of fantasy.)"
