It's what I hope will pull developers into line, if they are told to make it run on a stream cube then average computers will run it fine. They've kinda already started it with the steam deck because all the competitor machines aim for the same level of specs. 8 gb vram is already not enough for 4k gaming and hasn't been for some time. You could get away with it on 1080p and maybe even 1440p but if they're genuinely aiming for good 4k gaming then 8 gb will run like dogpoop and force people to run textures on low which defeats the purpose of 4k.

Television. The television is the bottleneck here. I can and have slapped a 14" gaming monitor with maximum 144 Hz to my desktop PC and cranked it up to 140+ fps on some titles, but if it attaches to my 65" television it caps at 60 fps.

We're talking about the Gabe Cube's specs. It's a simple PC designed to give a console like experience and be hooked to your television, not for people who already have the ability to build their own desktop at higher specs, or who have a dedicated gaming monitor.
So yes. My television is a bottleneck for the limitations of performance of the steam machine, and as a result the benchmark of 4k 60 fps is not under my expectations.

You get used to it after a while though, consistency matters more.

I prefer higher frames, but above that I prefer playable. So if a game is only playable at 30 frames consistently I will stick with it, but bouncing between a game that is 144 and a game that is 30 is not a great experience.

For me, 60fps is kind of the minimum for an experience that feels properly responsive since with the standard input lag that averages to less than 25ms click to screen.

Some people's eyes legitimately aren't sensitive enough to discern above that though.

I can tell the difference but i feel like the whole FPS thing is overblown. At 30 im happy. Any lower than that can screw off. There’s a small difference between 30 and 60 to me but a HUGE difference between 20 and 30. 60 is absolutely fine to me if that’s the benchmark for the gabecube.

I guess different people find different FPS acceptable. To me, 144 is perfect motion. 144-120 is decent still. 120-80 i can tolerate. Sub 80 is pain, and 60 is a slideshow. It literally bothers the back of my eyes playing at below 80.

That's stupid, it entirely depend on what kind of game you play. If you need fast reaction speed it's better to trade resolution for fps, but if it's a more slow paced gameplay it's better to have the pretty pictures even if you get less of them.

It's Navi 33 dervived. Might use some of the RDNA 3.5 power optimizations, but overall it's a 7600 clocked at 1400-ish. Also Valve probably ordered enough chips for the tape out of Navi 46 to make sense - also a GRE at 1600-1800 should stay within a 150W power budget

On top of what other people have said, it doesn't give much reason to replace the rig you already have unless you just absolutely want one. If you don't have a rig or have a low end one, then it's a good deal. But if your rig is at or above the specs then there's no real point, especially considering you can just swap out chips and boards in your rig to match or exceed the specs.

The perk I see is for party games or co-op games. You can just sync your steam library, and pop the game on the tv with 4 controllers, meaning you can play pretty much any party game you want that doesn't tie with mobile.

Ultimately means that the console is based around the actual mode average (i.e. the result that recurs the most often in a given dataset) of all PC players who participate in Steam hardware surveys, the most common recurring traits in the three highlighted categories being 1080p (display resolution), 16GB (RAM) and 8GB (graphics card VRAM)
PC players being the way they are, they're quite mad that Valve isn't instead making a build that approaches or matches their multi-thousand-dollar behemoths of rigs despite the fact that this is ultimately meant to be a home console competitor and that the performance characteristics it does offer are more than sufficient for any game optimized to a reasonable degree, especially on a device that is exclusively running games, Steam and nothing else

Honestly, I think we wait for the price to come out, but it's clear that this is specifically meant to take on the console market directly - mini PCs have been around for a while but this is specifically one that's being released by a titan in the PC gaming sphere, is optimized for gaming in a console form factor, is meant to be used like a console for the most part, and wouldn't look out of place on the shelves of a store like Best Buy or Walmart
Also, if it's competitively priced to home consoles then it absolutely mogs the poop out of them simply because Steam games go on sale far more often at far lower prices, and also Steam doesn't charge you an increasingly-obscene retard tax to play online multiplayer

Yes we do but we can have some boundary conditions to guesstimate the price as it has to somewhat compete with consoles and most importantly a modest PC equivalent which may be worse off with windows and be bigger but can be upgraded more readily.
Steam Deck was a nobrainer because it had unmatched ergonomics, user experience and was debloated by skipping windows.
It doesn't matter as much in this form factor.

Valve made a device based on the mode-average performance of all of its surveyed users in 2025 and found that, surprise surprise, most people drive something like a Honda Civic and not a Ferrari or Lambo, so they made something that performs like the average but in a very compact and likely console-priced form factor
People with multi-thousand-dollar behemoth PCs are mad about this because they've been gaslit into believing that their builds are the average by which all PCs should be measured by when in reality anyone running above a 3050 and 16GB of RAM to run games on a 1080p display (something that can run most reasonably-optimized games, especially since the console itself is running Linux and for most people will exclusively be dedicated to running Steam + one game/application at any given moment) is statistically well above average

Valve's been pretty open about how one can pry open and modify their hardware in the past (particularly with the Steam Deck, their PC-gaming answer to the Switch) so I wouldn't be surprised if we see that for the Steam Machine when it comes out
If it runs standardized RAM then that can be upgraded just by swapping sticks, though the GPU situation is fixed since it uses a semi-custom AMD GPU (something I'd imagine the traditionally-Nvidia-elitist PC gaming crowd is also flipping poop over) to fit in that form factor while still providing good performance
Also yeah, the Steam Machine is literally a Linux PC and as a result you can do literally anything you want to it that you could theoretically do to any other Linux PC

Steam Box/Gabecube's specs are taken from the Steam User Specs Survey's most popular category, meaning they basically built a machine that's as powerful as what the survey results consider the average or most common build steam users use.

I worked almost 12 years for a gaming company, I understand but no shareholders have a better idea, and I hate every minute of it.

Optimization is already gone, and nobody is making it easier, unreal engine with nanite makes developers forget about poly counts, unoptimized meshes are ok now because they said so.

I got a really good PC, so I really shouldn't care about Gabecube or Steamdeck. But my Compie is so precious, that I couldn't bear to have anything happen to it. So, I would kinda like a portable PC box so I can play PC games at someone else's house without having to risk hauling my battlestation everywhere I go. Although, if it's more expensive than Laptop, I think that makes the decision for me.

Disable autoplay

I don't even know what games are still on the Xbox anymore, and I only got a PS4 to play my Chinese cartoon and mango games. I don't even wanna new console anyway, especially since everything is turning to a glorified digital storefront anyway. Steam gets my consideration, since it was always a digital storefront to being with.

Everything I hear about the Gabecube is just great. Has anything bad been announced about it? I legitimately can't think of anything yet

Is it set to be more powerful than all the other consoles by default? I know they said you could upgrade it yourself, but is it better out of box?

it's a console, that runs steam. it's intended to compete with consoles.

making a big nutz edition defeats the point.

The only thing that can potentially be bad about it is the price
they haven't revealed what the cost is gonna be yet, but if it's too expensive its gonna be dead on launch
