Ms. Alsalem’s statements reflect her personal mandate as Special Rapporteur, not the official position of the CEDAW Committee, which is the treaty body with authority to interpret the Convention.
The CEDAW Committee made clear in its General Recommendation No. 28 (2010) that the term “sex” in the Convention includes socially constructed gender roles and identities.
Therefore, trans women are covered under CEDAW’s protection against discrimination.
