Cancellation Chronicles: CBS Purging Crime Procedurals Just to Greenlight MORE Crime Procedurals is Bound to Backfire

It’s been a tough time for CBS Fanatics who dare to tune into the coveted network for their favorite series.

They dropped the axe on more fan-favorite series so quickly our heads are still spinning from these decisions.

Some of them are more shocking than others, but that doesn’t minimize the hurt it causes diehard fans, nor does it stop triggering those who still vividly recall the last time networks screwed them over.

The FBI is armed as the agents walk through the woods to capture an ecoterrorist on FBI: Most Wanted Season 6 Episode 3
(CBS/Mark Schafer)

Thus far, we’ve learned that the network will part ways with not one but TWO of its dynamic FBI franchises.

It’s breaking up what has become one of the most dominant blocks of television every Tuesday by shedding spinoffs FBI: International and FBI: Most Wanted while keeping the OG series intact.

Now, CBS is saying that it’s last call for S.W.A.T. (for real this time). The odds are there will be no saving this now thrice canceled series this time, and the numbers don’t support a last ditch renewal anyway. Of course, the 10 p.m. death slot didn’t help.

They’ve used up all their Hail Marys. One would say eight years in this climate is a damn great run!

Motivating factors for those cancellations could be that all three were series derived from outside studios, and CBS/Paramount would prefer to stay in-house. There’s also a lot of behind the scenes chaos over a Paramount/Skydance merger.

Good for Nothing - Shemar - S.W.A.T.
(Bill Inoshita/Sony Pictures Television/CBS)

When you factor those things, it’s this business.

But it doesn’t make it any easier on the fans, and worse yet, the vote of confidence is nonexistent when CBS keeps churning out the same type of content.

As it stands, it’s relying heavily on spinoffs and shows based on IP. Most of what was on the CBS roster checks these boxes.

However, the few shows we know may appear on the 2025 Fall schedule, promise more of the same.

Fire Country is getting its first spinoff (and we already know they’ll probably try for another), and it’s, you guessed it, a cop show.

Morena Baccarin - After fire - Sheriff Country
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)

Sheriff County will focus on the law enforcement department that crosses paths with the firefighters in the series, led by the incomparable Morena Baccarin.

Of course, she has a connection to the Leones as Sharon’s previously estranged stepsister.

And in an effort to appease legions of pissed-off Blue Bloods fans after that disappointing cancellation, we’ll never get over it; we’ll have a spinoff titled “Boston Blue.”

Yes, it’s a police procedural. Donnie Wahlberg will reprise his role as Danny Reagan, and we’ll follow him as he moves to Boston PD and pairs with a partner from a prominent law enforcement family.

Presumably, they’re like the Reagans, too.

Danny Gets Help - Blue Bloods Season 14 Episode 5
(CBS / CBS Broadcasting Screengrab)

Of course, that’s not all. We also have that FBI: CIA spinoff that likely has FBI Fanatics in a tizzy. Why would there be a CIA version of FBI in the first place?

How will they explore the concept of a joint task force between FBI and CIA agents? It teases the same formula of opposites attract begrudging buddy cops.

But after CBS dumped fan-favorite FBI: Most Wanted and the popular FBI: International, will viewers even want to give this CIA series a shot?

Why would they bother if the likelihood of it serving as roster filler and a capitalization of a franchise is strong, and it could be gone from the network in a season or two?

We also know that an Equalizer spinoff is in the works. It will likely still have a crime/law enforcement component if it’s anything like the original.

Blind Justice - The Equalizer
(Michael Greenberg/CBS)

If not, it’s at least falling closer to Tracker territory. But doesn’t it all feel like more of the same?

On top of that, CBS is gearing up for Matthew Gray Gubler’s return to television when he’ll lead his own series, Einstein (because, again, IP), which will have a professor who is a descendant of Einstein assisting police as penance for some trouble he gets in.

Will I watch the series because I love MGG? Sure.

Despite this piece, I’m not even opposed to crime procedurals. I rather enjoy them.

But if CBS is going to take such bold moves as repeatedly canceling beloved series, some of which actually do well in ratings, for any number of reasons regardless of how many fans they anger in the process, it would be nice if they took a bold swing, too, to make it worthwhile.

( Bennett Raglin/CBS)

They’ve bent over backward to acquire a modern-day Van Helsing series, but it doesn’t even sound as if it’ll have a supernatural tone in the least.

Since they let go of the acclaimed Evil, CBS hasn’t properly attempted that since. That’s assuming you don’t count the comedic hit Ghosts.

What will this version of Van Helsing be doing, you ask?

Not hunting monsters or slaying vampires! Nope. He’ll be teaming up with his ex-girlfriend to help her solve cases because, naturally, she’s a detective.

It would be easier to swallow CBS dumping some of its most popular series if they actually intended to reserve those spots for innovative new shows.

Kristen Gets Inside - Evil Season 3 Episode 7
(Elizabeth Fisher/Paramount+)

But so far, they’re just swapping out our comfort television for another version in different packaging and expecting us to be grateful rather than wary.

So far, it’s been CBS’ bread and butter as a network, and they’ve made it work. But for how long?

Will this process they keep following eventually backfire? If ever it was a time for it to, it’s now.

I have always loved cop/law enforcement shows. Going back to when was I was 9, and watching Columbo with my elderly neighbour. She would make lemonade, bake cookies, and we would watch together. I loved spending time with her, and really loved Columbo. As a kid I also loved The 6 Million Dollar Man, The Bionic Woman, Mannix, Kojak, The Wild Wild West, The Rockford Files, Starsky and Hutch, CHiPs, Barnaby Jones, Hawaii Five-0, etc. I am upset that CBS cancelled FBI: Most Wanted, FBI: International, Blue Bloods, and S.W.A.T., but no doubt I will check out the new crime procedurals.

@Sweet Amy, I enjoy them, too. I mean, I cover them. LOL! But I love some variety in my viewing, and I think networks should have a more diverse genre roster. At this rate, CBS is just churning out the same things, and I find it uninspiring. Every now and then they used to slip in one or two shows that were a bit edgy, creative, different than their usual fare just to try something out, but they don’t even do that anymore. It’s wall-to-wall crime procedurals with some comedies thrown in.

You’ll even give FBI:CIA a go? I really hope they change the name at least. LOL

Definitely going to give the blue bloods spin off a try. Rarely ever is any show set in beantown.

I knew MW was on the chopping board its the most expensive to produce and the lowest rated. Sad more for International I only recently started to enjoy it after watching reruns over the writer strike it, but Mitchell was my least favorite aspect this season he was so one dimensional getting mad all the time puffing his chest out and acting like he was the big man on campus. That kind of temperament would never be allowed to lead an international team. Scott may have gone renegade but he at least respected his teammates.

@Dean, People were upset at me for talking about Most Wanted, but it was expensive. FBI: International was a cheaper series, so when all this went down, I was bracing myself for Most Wanted’s cancelation. I didn’t see International coming, though. Mitchell was definitely a polarizing character. So many people weren’t vibing with that addition at all.

I think both shows took their biggest hits when their likable leads left and they got polarizing ones in their place. People really struggled with Remy after Jess, too. They thought the best move was to implement a vastly different character in place of the former person to avoid too much comparison, but that backfired.

And frankly, if series didn’t have to hinge on a bigger star to buoy it, Most Wanted would have made more sense if Sheryl led the team.

@Jasmine Blu, I felt the same with International and Vo. Especially how Scott was mentoring her to lead last season. But now she’s playing babysitter to someone even more belligerent than her.

I agree. I would’ve loved it if they set Vo up as new lead, but nope. We got Mitchell.

Been a cop show fan my whole life, if it looks good enough for me without sounding overly preaching, I’m in it for the long haul. (unless it does something utterly stupid enough to get me to dump it.).

The FBI’s never interested me, and from what I heard, it was just 1 BTS problem after the other with each show. (and I have a personal rule to avoid anything Dick Wolf makes.). And I was never into SWAT.

As shocking as it is to see shows that deserved renewal be tossed, it shows an unfortunate problem that the other networks are facing: Financial issues with paying for unowned or partiarlly owned shows.

keeping budgets low and staying in house with fully owned shows will be the new way going forward if anything is going to have a chance of having a long shelf life, especially in the age of always dwindling live ratings. And of course there is the expectation of always having new shows on the schedule for Fall and having room space.

Yeah, it stinks. But that’s the unfortunate predictament the networks are in now, and there doesn’t appear to be any sign of letting up in the future.

Curious about your Dick Wolf rule. Why don’t you watch his shows?

I think FBI: Most Wanted had the most BTS issues. I never heard much about International or OG FBI.

I definitely get that aspect of it. It is irksome that CBS doesn’t get more creative with what they kick out, though. It’s just copy and paste with no real risk taking or variety, regardless of who owns it. I love a crime show as much as the next person, but goodness. I, too, am curious about your anti-Dick Wolf stance.

@Carissa Pavlica, his shows tend to be problematic in ways I don’t like, and he likes to make a lot of relationship drama happen, and I’ve had enough of shipping drama in fandoms to last a lifetime.

Ahhh. I guess I can understand that. You don’t have streaming, right? The show his son co-created on Prime Video, On Call, doesn’t get messy like that. You might like it.

Why are they canceling this show and international? I don’t understand. Both very good shows!!!

@Nancy ODell, it doesn’t matter how good a show is if the ratings tank network won’t keep it and MW and Int are two of the the lowest rated shows on CBS.

i enjoy watching, procedurals, i really enjoyed the FBI shows, Blue Bloods, and The Equalizer. I still enjoy NCIS shows. I never liked quirky show, Elsbeth, Matlock, or So Help Todd. Blue Bloods spinoff, will work if the show is filmed in Boston, Not New York or Toronto. I am still disappointed CBS canceled, the FBI shows.

I’m so glad I’m not watching anything on CBS. Started boycotting when they canceled NcisHawaii. Wasn’t that a CBS studio production? Plus it did well in the ratings…still don’t understand why it was cancelled. For me CBS loss is ABC gain. I am enjoying Will Trent and High Potential. Why would anyone get invested in a show on CBS when they will just cancel it abruptly.

@Kim, Will Trent and High Potential are excellent, I agree!

Yeah, CBS lost a lot of fans with Magnum PI and NCIS: Hawaii cancelations. I notice people are still passionate about those series no matter how much time passes.

@Jasmine Blu,
RGHT?! Its not just Dick Wolf but its becoming a trend,Taylor Sheridan and Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk etc.Im scared to get attached after Hawaii was scrapped for a tony and ziva spinoff.I loved them but id rather Hawaii or better yet a new spinoff called NCIS Elite(Sam Hannah unit)with a couple agents from L.A.,paris(tony+ziva),New Orleans,Sydney etc, could be a perfect compromise and win-win-win(my idea).
I would love to have one crime procedural that doesnt have love story/will they won’t they

If 6.x odd million eyeballs is a “failed show” then what is a good show? They have many shows who have under this amount of eyeballs , so why are they not cancelled as well. Dont us fans and ultimately viewers have some say in this? Noooo, coz its all about the money stupid!

FBI is primarily in an office whereas Most Wanted is out and about in the USA and International is based in Budapest. I like the out and about and international flavor. Most Wanted has a mobile command which imo is far better than an office setting, and international rarely uses their office at all. So what is the problem?

So it costs a little more, so what, pay it. I am sure the hundreds of millions of dollars you pay your executives could take a little haircut to allow these shows to continue. As they say, wine, gets better with age. So too

will FBI Most Wanted and FBI International, they both have just changed bosses and need time to properly ‘bed’ in.

Further on: I posit this: If CBS is prepared to take a haircut, the perhaps Dick Wolf should too, that way its not just one side, but there is something on the other side of the equals sign. No? Yes? For the benefit of the fans of course. I am sure there is some way to save these 2 shows, if everyone, and I mean everyone, on both sides, comes to the aid of both watchable shows.

This is just my opinion, so please send abuse & threats to /abuse/null
