Coffee makes me so angry/aggressive

I hardly ever drink coffee anymore, I feel like I’m one of those people who once I start drinking something I want more, especially with coffee and alcohol (sidenote, lol)

But I’ve noticed lately that if I have two cups of coffee I’m in such a bad and aggressive mood. One cup is fine, if it’s not too strong.

I think it might be because I feel stressed out from the caffeine, I don’t know. But that’s why I hardly drink it anymore.

Can anyone relate?

I can say the same. I am very short and standoffish with friends and coworkers after several days on caffeine. I feel like I get a lot done, but I am also more stressed out and annoyed, so not sure it's worth it.

I get the same way!! Totally weird with people and not able to relax around them if I drink coffee … it took a long time to figure it out. But it’s honestly not worth it to have even one cup if it may result in a bad interaction with someone …. I get so angry after coffee!!

Exactly the same here too! I hadn’t drank coffee in 3 weeks and I was loving life! Drank some last night because I work nights, and holy hell, I was back to feeling so angry. Everyone bothered me and was stupid. Now I’m here after one night of coffee, trying to come down from that feeling.

Holy shit I thought I was the only one. I had stopped drinking coffee about 3 weeks ago and I was super happy and content with my anything and everything. I had a cup last night and the anxiety and stress going through me was crazy! I work nights also so already things irritate me. But I never knew coffee was actually sending me into a rage, not lashing out but just really angry at people for no good reason.

I’m definitely going to kick coffee out after that accidental experiment.

I’m still trying to come down from such an incredible amount of anxiety and stress that I had going on last night from the coffee.

Ps. I used to really love coffee because of what it did for me. Really loved the jolt to get everything done. But I rather feel happy and content. The trade off is not worth it for me.

Came online looking for answers because I become angry, hateful, and a total jerk when I drink coffee, even just a lil' grande from Starbucks, and I'm hating life and everyone in it. I'm usually a very relaxed and easygoing person.

Me too!!!!! I became a total B… and I hate everyone when I drink coffee ! It’s so weird… I actually become a totally different, emotional wreak and awful person whenever I drink coffee!! Or eat chocolate ! If I don’t take caffeine, I’m completely normal and love people … it has that kind of completely drastic effect on me

I find if I'm in a stressful or irritating situation I can handle it if I have no caffeine in my system but if I drink a large cup of coffee and get into a stressful/irritating situation I get an adrenaline spike on top of my caffeine adrenaline spike and I'm so amped up and wired it becomes hard to stay calm and logical. With that being said though I find if I'm already in a clear-headed good mood and I drink coffee, it usually acts as a mood enhancer so it's a two way street. If you're someone whose prone to anxiety and doesn't deal with stress well it's better to stay away from high amounts of caffeine.

Thanks for your answer! Glad to hear it’s not just me. I guess maybe adderall has the same effect when it comes to the adrenal gland, maybe just in a much more ‘efficient’ way, I can’t even imagine taking a substance like that with my nerves lol.

But of course we’re all different. Glad you got over your addiction to it!

I can understand how it’s addictive though, I feel sometimes a little bit of caffeine lifts my mood, and I suppose it’s the same with adderall.

Being addicted to anything really sucks though. Know all about that, lol.

Take care!

I like this post because I've never seen someone mention this here before.

I definitely get the same, and now that I'm off caffeine I've tought myself ot regulate a lot better

Oh man, I’m usually a very calm and reasonable person, but everytime i drink a cup of coffee, I instantly got so aggressive and cant calm down at all, literally want to break stuff and beat people up for no reason

Edited

The effect of coffee last 4 hours so 1 in the morning, 1 at lunch, 1 at or after dinner and you're perpetually high and irritable and , cant sleep. You wake up cranky because you didn't sleep well then later rinse  repeat.  STOP. You won't notice how wired you are til you stop but when relaxation sets in you'll see.

Also, it may be the gas in your stomach from coffee making you nuts.

Sometimes after drinking coffee and trying to relax I get the sensation I want to jump up while my limbs go in different directions . Lol?  I got to quit. The times I go without coffee I feel like I'm relaxed and an almost different person.

It helps to remind myself I never needed coffee or any stimulant when I was a kid so why do I need it now ? I dont and neither do you.  After waking your body and brain naturally wake up after about 20 minutes even without coffee.

Coffee IS a drug.

Coffee makes me crazy. And once I realized it I became aware of how if effects other people too. I'm pretty sure it ruined my parents marriage and probably countless others. Maybe that's why divorce rates are so high. I won't be making the same mistake.

You’re so smart!!!! I’m so happy for you that you have learned this and know what a problem it is! It has almost ruined some relationships for me until I quit and discovered that I’m not an emotional wreak! I just can’t take caffeine !!!

I just had one 8oz cup of instant coffee with a milky coffee creamer and sugar; and I instantly became irritable and aggressive. If someone was here, we almost certainly would have had a problem. This is completely the opposite of who I am. But after I brush my teeth those negative energies began to subside. Anyway, I think all the posters are right. Coffee is a reason for the anger and rage in our society. For now on, just say No to coffee. I am.

  • just came here to say me too. switching to matcha for a while.

Same here. Switched to green tea and feeling much calmer and at peace. Plus, sleep improved greatly. Seems like even a small cup in the morning can make a big difference.

Same though now I am seeing it with decaf as well. Wondering if it’s also tied to adrenal issues. My stress level has been very high and my thyroid issues probably don’t help.

I’m glad I’m not alone in this. I’m gonna cold turkey from coffee for a while. I thought decaf would help but it just didn’t go away!

coming from suffering with caffeine. I've noticed the matter recurring so much that it can't be ignored. Every time I drink a cup, I feel like a madman and I can't hold my tongue from saying anything, even if it's too frank. Anyone who throws annoying words at me turns me into a volcano. I drank some tea late at night, then the morning came and a person invited me to have a cup of coffee with my breakfast (As if I needed to suffer twice as much from these things) . We chatted for a little while and the matter ended in a heated quarrel between me and him over something very trivial. I belatedly realized the amount of caffeine in my body and apologized to him, but this incident was very annoying and I decided to give up these drinks permanently. This is not the first time but its the 1000 times that Iam noticing the weird correlation between it and my mood with others.

The problem is not that I did not know this before, but I tried to adapt as much as possible and make sure that I get enough calories for my body in order to alleviate the symptoms of caffeine (drinking a cup on an empty stomach may make you a monster whether diluted with milk or not). I also tried to relieve its symptoms by drinking something that is anti-caffeine, such as milk and more milk, and It's almost the only way to get rid of its annoying symptoms. Today my mood has become very tense and my nerves feel unstable.

This is going to be challenging as I like drinking cola but after noticing its horrible side affects I have decided to cut all forms of products that contain caffeine, no more injecting poison into my body! Chocolate, ice cream, cake, soft drinks and anything I doubt. Not a quarter of a milligram of it. I also suffer from excessive sleeplessness, and it is not unlikely that caffeine is the cause. I don't need it and I haven't benefited from it except for an increase in my blood pressure and annoying nerve tension.

I don’t drink coffee and this is why I have one cup of coffee I’m fine the next day I have another cup of coffee by the end of the week I will noticed that my personality changes every time something goes wrong or aggravates me, I would get angry and I can’t control it. When I don’t drink coffee I’m fine everything just rolls off my back, life is great.

    GREEN TEA, guys!!!

I used to love coffee and noticed similar effects in myself and others- have even ‘spiked’ the coffee of others by adding peppermint or chamomile tea to it to avoid aggressive outbursts haha.

Now I know an even better solution- green tea!!! You still get to feel more awake and uplifted, but it has L-theanine which helps you relax.

Don’t use boiling hot water and don’t oversleep- otherwise it can get bitter and upset your stomache.

Boil your water and set a timer for 1-2 minutes to let it cook for a bit.

Then, steep your green tea for 3-5 minutes.

If I’m really tired (most mornings) I use two tea bags and it’s as upfliting as coffee. If you’re exhausted, you can even try 3!

I love my tea with frothed organic soy milk and stevia, so good :)

You can also try caffeine free chicory root for a similar flavor as coffee if you want the flavor but not the caffeine. I also sometimes feel edgy on decaf coffee, could be the acidity.

    Happy drinking! 🍵🍵🍵

Yeah I will low-key freak out on people in teams meetings and then later be like why the fuck did I act like that. Oh right I literally was drinking espresso at the time

It's probably a mix of caffeine and sensory overload from all the customer noises.

Same. It makes me particularly cruel. Or should I say, it gives me the freedom to be cruel. I am a cruel person deep down probably and the coffee gives me the boost and confidence to be a prick. Same with alcohol. When I'm stone cold sober I can hide it or push it away.

Yesss!!! This me rn. I had too much coffee earlier and have been super snappy with my 5 year old. And that makes so much sense about gut health affecting our brains! I've also been bloated the last few days 😩. Cortisol levels must be high.

    Me too. Irritable. Aggressive. Short-tempered.

Yeah, I get incredibly irritable on caffeine, I think it's pretty common & seeing as how like 90% of the population is addicted to caffeine it makes sense how much rage is in our society.

    that is pretty concerning

I'm always surprised at how few people still snap and go on rampages and stuff like that

I’ve noticed certain coffees will do this to me, and others are fine. There’s a local coffee shop that carries a coffee I love, but it makes my irritability and anxiety go through the roof. Its not a caffeine issue I don’t think, because I’ve had more far more caffeinated coffee. Just something about that particular bean I guess.
