阿弖流為率いる蝦夷の叛乱に対して朝廷が征夷大将軍に任命した坂上田村麻呂は渡来人（中国や朝鮮からの帰化人）の家系で、鎮圧後、阿弖流為の除名を嘆願した。また当時の桓武天皇の母・高野新笠も百済（朝鮮）の家系だった。日本は昔から単一民族国家ではない。
