Risk of fire spread?
I’m within 3 miles of the airport. I’m listening the the police scanner but I’m wondering if anyone knows if it would be smart to get my cats in carriers or if that’s an over reaction - also, turn your ac units off!

Stay home and only evacuate if youre told to. Put the cats in carriers if it would make you feel better
Until further info comes out, just sit tight.
Do not panic, but it won’t hurt to throw together a go bag just in case. ID, money, meds, chargers, a change of clothes, toothbrush/paste, a couple things of kitty food. Have the carriers ready.
They’ll be working hard to contain everything, but being ready and nothing happening is always better than the opposite. Stay safe out there!
Agreed. Packing the cats up and keeping them locked in carriers for potentially hours isn’t going to help anyone’s state of mind. Pack a bag but not the cats.
I have the carriers out but kitty’s are asleep on the couch - no worries
This isn’t a wildfire. It’s contained and won’t spread; they’re just working to knock it down as quick as they can.
It's an industrial accident - it depends on if they have the fire contained and there are no other potential fuel sources. If it isn't contained and there are fuel sources, it could absolutely spread.
As below we don’t know if it’s contained and yes it can spread if other buildings happen to catch fire. That’s not good to say things that aren’t true.
Right now their priority is getting the fire under control and they will prioritize citizen safety. Just pack a bag to calm your nerves and keep an eye on the news. I would put your phone on the charger to keep it charged
You will be safe where u are .
The Chicago fire back in the day proves anything can happen with out of control fire. Stay where you are until otherwise instructed, but have your oh shit bags and the cats ready. I work preparedness in shelby county.
Noted - packing now!
To add when I say cats ready, I wouldn’t crate them up, I’d just shut the doors and keep them from roaming too far out of my reach throughout the house
Why do we need to turn the AC units off? ACs typically recirculate air inside the house, also through a filter that needs to be replaced on a regular basis. What would turning the AC off do exactly?
That’s what my girlfriend who works in HVAC told me to do 🤷🏻♀️
Unless you have an economizer, there is no need to turn off ac
Idk what that means - my gf works in hvac and she told me to, so maybe that’s what we have 😅
It is extremely unlikely. You have an economizer on your house. Most people do not.
I've been reminded of how much I hate Reddit posters yet again.
