What's your opinion on LMPD?

Good afternoon, the question is in the title. That simple, please keep everything civil.

I'm asking because I was born in Louisville, raised in Hardin County. But, I've been in the Army for the last 8 years. So, I'm out of touch. I am looking to start a career in Law Enforcement after my service. Louisville seems like a really good department. I want honest takes, but like I said keep it civil, share your opinion or story. But, keep it clean please. Also, don't incriminate your self. Thanks for the read, and your time.

LMPD is still stained by the giant fuck up that was the no knock warrant that resulted in the death of Brionna Taylor in 2020.

Additionally, and subsequently, the DOJ concluded that civil rights were routinely violated by LMPD (source)

I say that we need good officers. If that is you, then I would encourage you to join… but know going in that there is most likely a culture problem deeply entrenched in the LMPD

If you’re looking to join a police force where the community respects and appreciates their efforts, this ain’t the one to join. There is a large portion of the population that has a distrust of the organization and its leadership.

I've read about this incident multiple times and even wrote about it in one of my college courses.

I understand there will always be "bad apples". But, at some point we have to stop make excuses and call out the problem.

I would absolutely love to be a change for the better. I have no doubt I could positively affect the community. I know people have lost trust in Law Enforcement all over the nation. It's sad, but not too late to change.

The union doesnt call out problems. You vs them.

The thing I always want to say to police is that it's on YOU (the police) to mend the damage caused by the police... Even if it wasn't you, per se that did the damage.

The distrust is there. It exists, and it's on the police to build back that trust.

As the saying goes a couple of bad apples with spoil the bunch.

I don't see that changing. Especially since those bad apples aren't pruned.

"Good Cops" are run out or converted.

Has to be one of the most incompetent police departments in the United States. Sometimes I think they have an internal competition to see which officer can cost the city more money.

There's videos of them throwing drinks at pedestrians for no reason, no one was actually held accountable for murdering breonna taylor, multiple SA allegations against one of the cops who was involved in the murder of Breonna taylor, I've seen cops turn on their lights just to go through a red light. A cop was drunk driving and totaled one of my friend's parked cars. When on duty cops came to the scene, they yelled at HER and not the cop who was drunk driving and wrecked into a bunch of cars.

Good luck being the change. It's full of bad apples and if there are any "good" apples in the LMPD they sure as hell aren't doing anything to make positive changes now

Edited to add source of video of drinks thrown https://www.wdrb.com/news/crime-reports/how-bout-a-drink-videos-show-louisville-cops-tossing-drinks-at-random-people-on-the/article_cb77d87a-a056-11ee-af5e-a78b05354e17.html

The other day I saw an officer in a police SUV driving terribly and when I passed him I saw the reason he was so terrible at driving was that he was on his phone.

Aside from that, I just see cops hanging around Thorntons or speedway all the time.

I've seen probably 10x more serious traffic collisions than I've seen anyone get pulled over. At least in that aspect, they don't seem to be doing their jobs.

Just out of curiosity, what makes a person look at an organization that's well known for being a stain on the community and say "Sounds good, sign me up!" I get that you want to make a positive change in the world, but why/how would joining this organization achieve that goal? Why not pursue something that genuinely supports the community instead of shitting on it?

LMPD is one of the most ineffectual departments in the country. They’d rather harass citizens, drive erratically, be lazy, and then blame the public for not giving tips. Poor leadership and training has crippled an already poor department. After the murder (yes, they murdered her) of Breonna Taylor and the public outcry, LMPD basically gave up policing. People can talk “bad apples” all they want. No one in the dept speaks up to do anything. Got to protect that thin blue line I guess.

This right here. Very little has been corrected since that report came out. Hard to ask a community to trust you when multiple officers continue to commit human right’s violations.

I think OP is gonna be a cop here, no matter what anyone says. (basing the assumption off his responses to others' comments)

you've gotta be willfully ignorant to not know ab LMPD in 2025...

This system is created to slowly erode the goodness from people who want to be “good” cops. We knew someone who was trained extensively in mental health, was so kind and patient, grew up in south Chicago and was harassed by police so he wanted to be part of the change. The type of person you want to be an officer. And yet, we now don’t speak after he showed us body cam footage of him losing his cool over the tiniest shit and being a complete asshole to people. LMPD is not trained or equipped to manage half the stuff they do and don’t manage manage most of the stuff they could. Realize that being a cop is trauma day in and day out and they don’t really provide you with the services you need or deserve to manage that. You and your family will suffer. It is not worth it.

They're still doing too little to address the main problem in Louisville.

LMPD and the city fails to hold it's officers unnacountable. Here are a few articles that almost immediately come to mind:

Slushy Gate

Sexual Harassment

That is not even to mention the killing of Breonna Taylor. There is a reason LMPD has been singled out with a decent decree. They have consistently disrespected the citizens of Louisville and their reputation is earned. If you haven', consider reading the consent decree as well.

Don’t forget citing a pregnant homeless woman who was actively in labor Oh and he was given an award too.

I wish they'd all walk of a cliff

They pulled me over with 3 cars. I have no criminal record and I'm a smaller woman. 3 cars. They followed me thru old lousiville to Germantown. The next day in the news the story was a woman was shot and killed at the exact same time on brook st in old louisville. That kinda sums up lmpd, go after the poor instead of actual criminals. Oh and you'll get an award if you ticket homeless women in labor.

LMPD’s dirty laundry has been aired in Louisville for years in the local news and the union and city expect us to act like everything is fine. And then as soon as things are perhaps improving we get international scandals like arresting the pro golfer or giving a woman labor a citation. One step forward two steps back.

If you’re military, why not reenlist? If you truly want to do law enforcement, why not go the FBI route? And if not the FBI route, why not US Marshals Secret Service? So many other law enforcement options besides LMPD. If you are deadset on LMPD…woof.

LMPD has poorly ran for decades and allowed the bad actors to fester and grow. Not everyone is bad but not enough has been done to remove the bad officers. Policies are improving but it will take time.

Complete manure.

-Louisville seems like a really good department

Based on what metric?

Fuck LMPD, they are scum.

You should get a real job instead.

I have had far more bad experiences with LMPD than good. I think there are way too many officers in the force with biases and prejudiced views that affect their ability to help the communities they serve. When I was freshly 18, I was pulled over for the light above my license plate being out. The officer noted that I was driving slowly and I told him it was because I was kind of lost and looking for the highway. I was visiting a friend in a “bad” area and this was in 2011, before I had a phone with reliable gps. The officer accused me of being on pills and called someone else so they could search my car. While they were doing so, they started asking me questions about where I went to high school. I went to a school with a really good reputation. They asked me what a name of school girl was doing in that part of town and entirely changed their demeanor based on this. It was shocking and it really put a bad taste in my mouth. I have only had more experiences like this one over the years, unfortunately.

About 16 years ago I witnessed a car accident. Two guys had stolen a car and crashed it as I was sitting on my porch and I watched them bail out and flee. When LMPD arrived they accused the owner of the car (who had shown up at the scene as it was only a couple blocks from his house) of wrecking his own car. When I pointed out that he was too tall to have been either of the people that I watched flee the scene, an officer took me aside and threatened to take me to jail for disagreeing with them. To this day, I don't fully trust LMPD or their accusations because I have experienced first hand how they will threaten witnesses to go along with their narrative.

Louisville Metro has a slightly better than average score by watchdog agencies. But average is an incredibly low bar. I am flatly disgusted by them. If you are looking for a job in a nice city that guarantees you will be hated, Louisville police is the place for you. Great city, miserable job. Most other nice cities have far better police.

Why not pick the fire department? People LIKE those guys. No one writes songs about how horrible they are.

Out of all of the cities I’ve lived in, Louisville cops have made me feel safe and helped with crime in my neighborhoods: old Louisville, schnitzelberg, butchertown and Portland.

Cities where I’ve been harassed by cops for no clear reason: Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, LA, Cleveland.

Just my experience. But other commenters do a good job of explaining the complexities and challenges that come with LMPD.
