北九州モノレール小倉駅、40年前(昭和60年)の開業時ではなくJR小倉駅ビル建替えと合わせて延伸(平成10年)したことで、27年経過した今も色褪せない近未来的デザインが実現出来たのは結果的にはよかったと思う。

北九州市のDID(人口集中地区)は帯状に連担しており、それに沿ってJR鹿児島本線と日豊本線が通っている。 特に門司港〜折尾間(12駅46分)は市街地が途切れずに続き、ほとんどの駅にしっかりしたロータリーが整備され交通拠点となっている。 このような市街地構造は九州内の他都市では見られない。

九州各地の街を見てみると分かるが、北九州市って市街地が広すぎる。 熊本市や鹿児島市、長崎市など、アーケードが広く中心市街地も都会的であるが一歩外れると、バイパス沿いみたいな郊外の風景になる。 北九州市は、小倉の中心地は決して大きくないかもしれないが、中規模の街並みが延々と続く感じ。

新幹線「直方新駅」が出来ることで想定される小倉⇔博多間へのデメリットは、こだま停車中の通過待避が発生、通過待ちにより、こだま所要時間が大幅に延びる可能性が高いということです。 現在のぞみ15分〜16分、こだま17分のところ、こだま停車と通過待避で25分〜最大30分程度になると思われます。
